This is awesome! For one night a month lol!! If you could explain the moon’s path for the rest of the month in your easy-to-understand style, then you REALLY deserve an Oscar!!
@@PaoloCassarManghiI was gonna say the same. In any urbanized area stars are basically invisible and most people in those areas especially in poverty like in hoods where I grew up in chicago where people spend their whole life never traveling away from their home city unless moving to another equally big city where they have a relative, have never in their entire life witnessed the breathtaking impossible to count stars of the true night sky. It's a beauty lost and not even known about to modern places. Most people just assume the handful of stars we can see are the only ones up there and don't wuestion it when seeing photos of other places that look like magic. We just assume that's all fancy editing not the actual sky. Fortunately roads in cities tend to be grids and in many urban places we have so many roads thst we give them numbers rsther thsn names and those numbers usually increase or decrease north and south. So navigating in urban places at both day and night in any weather tends to be far easier just by knowing the roads. I spent almost a decade homeless near chicago and also 2 years living in a car, when I developed the habit of always parking on the west side of buildings before going to sleep at night because this meant in the morning I would stay shaded for several hours after sunrise not getting hot to the ooint of hard breathing and be able to sleep in for a few extra hours. It was agame changer as far as being able to sleep longer and not waking up feeling suffocated by heat stumbling to roll the windows down. Whenever I needed to sit or park for long periods after taking care of some business I would plan ahead of time where a good spot would be that wouldbe shaded at that time of day, shade in the west in mornings and shade in the east side in afternoons so I would keep in mind nearby places where I could go. In the US highways are a good direction marker as well. All Odd number highways run north/south while all even number highways run east/west. All those that are multiples of 5 run all the way across the nation from coast to coast (The 10's) or top to bottom of the nation like canada to mexico or new york to florida (5's) Despite how large US is, we set the system up for this reason it's just another little piece of help for truck drivers/travelers and lost people. If at any point you come across a highway even if it's not an interstate just a state highway, the odd number means it's running north/south and even number means it's east/west👍🏻
Hey Alfie, On the discourse of easy moon Nav, here's another (perhaps obvious) tasty bit... As you mentioned in your video, given a position in the Northern Hemisphere, the moon rises in the East and sets in the West (well, more or less - you know what I'm getting at). That being noted, if we're talking a bright moon status, especially a full moon status on a winter night with a snow covered ground and no leaves to block the light (see where I'm going with this?)... Boom! You can use the shadow stick method to determine your Cardinal orientation. Also, if the moon is less than half full, a line drawn between the two tips of the crescent down to the horizon points to a rough estimate of South... Which can be refined to a more accurate reading with a little more study, but that's for another day. Best, G
Coud you make an image showing the different seasonal positions and times of the moon? I want to add it to my notebook, seems like an easy yet nifty trick.
Easy Peasy lemon squeezy. Well played GG. (working on my British slang.) Temps are below zero in my part of the world right now keeping me indoors. Keep the videos coming to keep me both informed and entertained.
Nice vid, but it seems a complex way to find south using the sun and the time. Point the hour hand (or use your imagination) at the sun. Half way between the hour hand and midday is south. Same for a full moon.
Thanks for your work! As a Trail Life (similar to Cub/Boy Scout) volunteer, could I have permission to use snippets from your videos on the North Star navigational series as navigational aids for my grade school kids. Also, concerning the video above, how much error would there be using a quarter/non lit moon for wrist watch direction navigation at night. Thanks. God Bless. Respectfully, Bob Thomas
Just remember since a full moon is in opposition to the sun, it will be where the sun will be in six months. If it is December the moon will be where sun would be in June (high in the sky). In July, the moon appears where the sun would be in January (low in the sky).
But this man made a whole video about it varying where the sun rises and sets from depending with your season and only if you are in the Northern hemisphere
So why only the full moon, crescent & half moon still has the whole East/West going for it. Most nights when you can see the moon you can also see the stars so I'm good. Thanks for the video, always a blast and packed with good information.
Yo Mister! Greetings from Switzerland! I'm one of these guys who watches your amazing³ stuff and just wanted say - thank you - at first! [and I want to have you precious attention]) I was wondering if the stick-trick (five foot stick and three short sticks stuck to the tip of the sticks shade - creating an east to west line) also works as a kind of a fullmoon30minuetesthreestickslightspeedeasttowest-navigation device, where you could have a smokin hot hiking break? Would be interesting! I'm also courous if it can be predicted with half of our celestial neighbor to avoid the risk of pedophiles... ya know... I got young looking skin and it's night... anyways... If you're ever in Austria - feel free to join Otto Michael Oberegger and my campsitefirechillnbugout sessions throughout the year whenever I'm not working waytoolittle in Switzerland. If you wonder who that guy is, I'm afraid there's a video of us, washing some dirty pieces of meat on my channel during our so called "Hungergames Austria Edition" - my (so far) most intensive adventure I should have put to an even higher level by your verbalisation skills! Well done bro!
I watched this video twice! I'm saving the last four. Until you make a new video 😉 and or until I can't stand it any longer😂 So now I'm going to have to go through your videos again and again. I Need those "Reruns" because I got Alfie itis and there is no cure. Hey Alfie are you a Virgo?
What about when no sun and/or no moon... YOU GOT A VIDEO ON THAT.... Or do we go by memory as in memorizing this video and go by time as in the time will give me the place of the moon ❓ you got me thinking... Am I close❓
All you need to do is grab a pack of winnie blues, light up and find your southern cross. After you've found the southern cross straya will smile upon you. Then you must pop 3 pingers and you will find north
Question Im thinking you can but just want to verify! The analog watch trick to find North with the sun does it also work with the moon? Thanks your videos rock their by far my favorite survival videos!!!
Not very reliable because the moon has its own orbital movement + it's not directly on the opposite side even in the best cases. You could in many cases monitor the moon's movement through the sky during a day or two, then use it for orientation, but by then you would have much better things to orient by.
Of course, it is visible at times during the day. That is like that just about everywhere on Earth, except for maybe in places like Beijing or Los Angeles. When the Moon is in its last quarter (half lit) phase which comes up about 6 hours before Sunrise, it is easily visible at about mid sky after sunrise and throughout much of the day providing a clear sky. The phase of the Moon stays the same throughout the day and gradually changes its phase as it orbits the Earth and rises about 50 minutes later each day.
Alfiexaesthetic, I'm trying to understand. What & Why is "North Star" important over East, West and South? Like why is there a North star & not a South star, or West star, or East star? Originally planet Earth started out magnetic South! So why isn't there like a south star? Ok And Now planet Earth is magnetic North, as we know it today! However, Earth is now heading back to magnetic South, where it originally started from! But you never hear about. And you never hear about a South Star!?! I'm so that's why I'm wondering what is significant about the North Star! I love the Northstar don't get me wrong dude.
This diagram does not make sense. With this model the moon would be absent from the night sky every month and crescent could only be seen in daylight. New model required no?
AlfieAesthetics The one of the earth sun and moon. It's been bothering me. If the sunny side of planet day and other is night. Then how would we ever see a crescent or new moon going over the night sky. Been looking for a model showing the moon phases being caused by sunlight reflection but it never works. Do you play pool or snooker? Can't find a working model. Can you see why I think this is goofy?
AlfieAesthetics Yeah it doesn't work. It looks good static and sorta makes sense but when you animate the process you see the moon is not in the night sky for half a month every month and instead during the day. This is not how it works. I see crescent moons going over the night sky all the time.
Video deserves more views and likes, as well as an Oscar.
This is awesome! For one night a month lol!! If you could explain the moon’s path for the rest of the month in your easy-to-understand style, then you REALLY deserve an Oscar!!
Still, if you can identify the North Star, then night-time navigation is easy, no?
@@TitiniusAndronicus not if you are lost in a light-polluted city. The moon will be much easier to spot when available

It's a simple concept but few make it simple to understand. Nice job. And you didn't even kill anything!
Moons highest point is due south too....done. But if you can see the moon, you can find the polar star just as well.
Can't do this because i'm a werewolf on full moons.
Your ex told me you have always been a werewolf and smell like one too.
Hahaha Dimpotriva your wife told me that when you turn into a werewolf you turn into a beast a beast that cant control his tummy
Easy peasy...hmmm Nice job, thanks!
That’s some good stuff! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Alfie. Love you videos. I always get a giggle while I learn something new. Cheers mate
cant wait until the spring when there hopefully will be more campaesthetics

This is correct if you are close to north. If you are close to equator you can mix south and north. You should mention that?!
Very cool
Thanks for the video
I'd say he's the real deal good job great video.

2:16 "...so we'll need a watch or a mobile phone..." If you have your phone with you, just download a compass app and never mind the moon.
Nice vid, but it seems a complex way to find south using the sun and the time. Point the hour hand (or use your imagination) at the sun. Half way between the hour hand and midday is south. Same for a full moon.
I'm enjoying reading Tristan Gooley's book Wild Sign and Star Signs- he's an expert natural navigator
Also you can find south with the moon when it is a Crescent or half a moon. I did a quick video on it. Check it out if you like.

now dats got to be dota references for sure always wondered about the ggwp but the luna reference you must play dota.
+Daniel ”Randomguy” jones the moon is called luna..
@alfieaesthetics what program / apps do you use in simulating the sky in the vid.

All you need to do is grab a pack of winnie blues, light up and find your southern cross. After you've found the southern cross straya will smile upon you. Then you must pop 3 pingers and you will find north

what is the lunar phase?
the sun would be more useful.
In the summer, the sun never sets

AlfieAesthetics your so knowledgeable bud how long have you been doing this?
You can't see a thin crescent phase 1 day before or after new moon at night.
You can't see a crescent moon at midnight.

the moon has its own light. it's not a.reflection of sun light. they both have their own light.
Miguel Ayala no they don't you dummy
Tell me, Miguel. Who taught you that?
earth is flat and space is between peoples ears
