Jiyan: Story Of A Female Guerilla Fighter (War Documentary) | Real Stories

  • The fascinating story of Jiyan, a female guerrilla fighter who devoted twenty years of her life in the Kurdish militant struggle, reveals women’s determination for freedom not only against another oppressive regime, but also against the patriarchy.
Jiyan Tolhildan is a young Kurdish woman living in the Kurdish region of Syria. After years of oppression by her family, her teachers and the society as a whole, Jiyan decides to go to the mountains to join the Kurdish struggle for freedom.
When the Arab Spring breaks out Jiyan and her friends decide to go into the cities in Syria to join the protests. They also set out to educate Syrian women on women’s rights in the Rojava region. Now, six years after the Arab Spring, Kurdish forces have a semi-autonomous region in Syria. For the first time in history, women have an autonomous political organisation and an army in Syria. The women named creating this organisation “the women’s revolution.”

Are you serious or are you trolling? Jiyan joined PKK in the 1990s and took part in violent actions in Turkey, this was even shown and stated in this video. Her past doesn't suddenly change just because she went back to Syria.

If every sub-identity in the countries took up arms and wanted to establish a country in their own name (which Kurds do not want, only Kurdish nationalists), then the world would be nailed. PKK has been very successful in the image given by the Kadines. It has won many people's sympathy. But the facts are not like that. I don't understand how other people can accept and support the Kurdish state. Nearly %25 of Turkey's population is Kurdish. Do you really think if they want a country of their own you could even prevent that? And is it really the way of that to use weapons to fight for a state. You can just look at the Catalan people easily how that supposed to be. If you use weapons against our soldiers, what do you expect in return?
This movement is basically the worst thing that happened to our Kurdish society. When a government tries to make developments in the east of Turkey, you see some workers die, trucks burned. (I lived there and I saw.) Every 1 or 2 months you see the blackouts in a town. Why? Because these guerillas cut down the electricity. This is not the way.
If the thing you want is the Kurdish people's prosperity, this is really not the way. Protests and so on are not. Peace and working hard to help the people is the key.

But I also find the PYD particularly worth mentioning, especially for a group with a Muslim faith their ideas are a huge step forward. We here in the West also have to thank these Kurds a lot. And yet they lack modern equipment to be able to work economically, there is a lack of food and medicine. Although we owe them a lot, hardly any western country is helping and that's a shame. 🤥 I can somehow understand that Turkey is not helping and that they are doing everything possible to get in the way of the PYD, because Kurds and Turks have been at war with each other for ages. But here too I am more on the side of the Kurds. Hardly any other people in modern times had to endure so much suffering and fight for every little advance with their own blood. I wish all Kurds and the PYD every success. 👍👍👍

Kurds` national independence struggle against the colonialists is absolutely legitimate.
But the PKK and the PYD`s radical ideology is against Kurdish nation`s rights and interests. The PKK and affiliations are trying to establish ultra-demokratic, anarchist, feminist entity without questioning the occupier`s colonial borders. This is unrealistic, irrational paradigm. This video made me cry.
I have had these dreams of women pushing back. Women fighting the oppression of Islam for decades. I kept looking for signs. I have been for most of my life. And then I saw this video.
It is the sons and daughters of these women that will reform Islam. And the region.
If there is anyway I can help these people please let me know. I am not a rich man. But am willing to give time and effort for their cause.

I'd agree with the other commenter about spreading the word about the Kurdish struggle and their oppression by Turkey, urging support for Rojava etc. If you do want to help a little monetarily, you could consider donating to the Kurdish Red Crescent; they are a humanitarian group helping rebuild Rojava following their struggles against ISIS.
