The "Xª Mas Flottiglia" was a special unit of the Italian Navy during World War II. "Xª Mas" is the abbreviation for "Decima Flottiglia MAS," which translates to "10th Flotilla of Navy Assault Vehicles" in Italian. This flotilla specialized in underwater warfare operations, particularly attacking enemy ships using torpedoes.
The Xª Mas Flottiglia was established in 1939 by Italian commander Junio Valerio Borghese with the aim of conducting secret operations against enemy warships in ports and coastal waters. The unit consisted of highly trained volunteers, often combat swimmers and divers, who were willing to risk their lives in daring missions.
The flotilla became famous for its bold and effective attacks, including the use of small submarines called "maiale" (pig) or "slam" to stealthily approach enemy ships and strike them with magnetic explosive charges. These attacks inflicted significant damage on the British Navy during the war.
One of the Xª Mas Flottiglia's most renowned actions was the attack on the port of Alexandria in Egypt in 1941. Three maiales successfully infiltrated the harbor and sank two British battleships, the HMS Queen Elizabeth and the HMS Valiant. This daring operation made a lasting impact and bolstered the flotilla's reputation.
The Xª Mas Flottiglia continued to conduct operations until the end of the war but suffered heavy losses and was disbanded in 1945 with Italy's surrender. Nonetheless, its legacy as an elite underwater warfare unit remained intact, and it is still regarded as one of the remarkable special forces of World War II.
