- When I started illustrating my first picture book with a publisher I had no idea how the process would work and how involved they would be, so I've made this video to give you some into the behind the scenes of the process (they were amazing and lovely, by the way)!
I'll be making a video soon that dives into the creative side of things, like how I created the colour palette and decided on the layouts.

Hi , so did you use mainly photoshop- I am not sure if I should use illustrator or photoshop. I thought I might need illustrator to keep a vector graphic quality for a high print quality. Thank you if you could answer would be great. I am just making my child’s dream come true and creating her books as final books. Giving her the support that she needs as a little dreamer, creator and believer. You did such an amazing job 🎉

Many like me are probably waiting to be reached by any publishing house, but it doesn't happen magically. I am so glad you got it because you put a lot of effort into your account, very perseverant and now your dream has come true!

This was so intersting! Congrats on your first book and that's so awesome you were contacted out of the blue and even though you couldnt disclose the amount it was helpful to know about stages of payment. I think this will really help other newly professional artists know what to expect and ensure they are paid something and recieve a proper offer - there are so many young artists who would get excited and could do work upfront without ever being paid so good to share the industry standard process! Thanks for sharing :)

Great detail video on your experiences illustrating your first picture book, Mimi. Thanks so much for sharing, so we can understand the process. I might be interested in doing a picture book someday, but I know I'm not ready yet. SO many layers, but I know ultimately it makes a difference. I love how you did your research, finding picture books you liked as a reference. I would have included in the video attributed references from professional art industry reference books/sites as to the average payment range for first-time picture book illustrators, just to give some idea. As a US writer, I found similar information in the Writer's Market annual reference book. I believe there is also an Artist's Market put out by the same publisher. No idea if there's an Australia, all English nations or global market version. Just a friendly suggestion. Take or leave it as you wish. Blessed be, and thanks again. Keep doing you.

I am trying to get a picture book done. It is my first book. I wrote the story, the hard part is how to illustrate cause i can't really draw and it is on the Titanic. It features my kids and a family friend so I want to do them proud.

One question though, how did you manage to send some of the PSD files to the publisher in the end (that part where the book designer could make adjustments)? Isn't the file huge? 😱 Is there third program to resize the file? 😯😯
Thank you so much! I uploaded all of the Photoshop files to Google Drive and sent them the link to download them via email. I'd say most of the PSD files are 100-300mb 😊

I stick to illustrating in Procreate and I know that it is possible to export the artwork as a psd file - I was wondering if this would be enough. What software did you use to format the book?
I have problem . All my interior pages prints are over saturated. Especialy blue colors. In photoshop i tried to reproduce in color proof the same print result. Nothing goes close to it. What are the exact parameters in color proof custom setup for kdp ?

Hey guyss, im working on illustrating a book and i wanted it to be in 6x9 inch size but i dont really know how to adapt it to the digital artboard or canvas-as in will the dimensions I have to add digitally be 6x9 inch 300res (photoshop) also? I don’t want to learn adobe or any other program, but I do want to illustrate books. I have 3 book covers and 1 children’s book under my belt, and all were done on illustration board with watercolor paint, and photographed at high resolution.

On Windows you can select all the jpgs you want to bundle, right click and then select 'combine files in Acrobat' if you have Adobe Acrobat 🥰
