The writers ? yu mean the writer Eichiro Oda the genius himself there are over 1000 episodes of this anime and its a roller coaster all the way thru and its still going seeing the love yu guys have i advise yu to start the anime yu guys will love it...and believe me the story can get better Goda is a genius of story telling everything matters even 1000 episodes later
I really hope they do all the seasons for OP but man, if you guys think Nami's back story was the saddest of the crew, wait until you really see Sanji's...... I'm at episode 996 of the anime and if they do manage to pack everything in for the live adaptation, then you guys are in for a treat. But if you ever wanna check out another anime or Netflix show with short amount of episodes per season that have a wonderful back story and great action, then give Demon Slayer and Castlevania a try. 🤗the anime community will go ballistic
@BaddMedicine One of us! One of us! In all seriousness, though. You just started Japan's equivalent to Lord of The Rings. Not covering the anime would be a disservice to yourselves.
Really want this known too - while not to take away from the way the writers here have helped to adapt it to TV/Netflix, all the major story points/beats and emotional impact written came from Eiichiro Oda. That's why it was so easy to make a great show - all of it was laid out already!
Oda's writing and artwork are top notch, he can draw the characters emotion so intensely. Nami's crying face is always makes me teary eyed. Reading the manga I cried many times, while watching the LA I just feel a bit sad.
Also gotta give respect to the team who made this tv show, they learned to listen to Oda, and go with the source material, they coulda went like others did, and do their own thing, and it would ahve sucked, but they didnt, hopefully they stick to that in S2 and onward.
While Bellemere's (Nami's mother) decision to not lie seems a bit pointless at first, really, as a former marine she knows fully what pirates like Aarlong are capable of. Even if she had lied then, they would've found out later anyway and then killed all three of them for lying. By paying the tribute and sacrificing herself, she ensured her daughters would at least be as safe as they could be in a pirate controlled village... Mad respect to her fr...
If you remember too, Bellemere struck Nami as a child for denying they were a family. This is one of those things that there just wasn’t enough time to translate into the live action. That whole moment happened just after Bellemere punishes Nami for that denial so she can’t very well deny her daughters right in front of her
Their situation / state of poverty is also a result of how the world government doesnt actually give 2 shits about ex-marines. Just like how you find vaterans homeless and on the streets. The world uses you for all you're worth then spits you out once you've served your purpose. There is no honour no matter which side of the law you stand on
In the anime, Luffy walks away and doesn't listen to Nami's sister story, so when Luffy replies to Nami "Yeah, I don't know what's going on" he really has no clue about Nami's backstory, he just wants to help her regardless of what happened
That's not exactly true. She told him she needed 100M to buy a village when they first met and he knows she hates pirates bc they killed sm1 dear to her bc she said that when they were fighting Buggy (in the manga, at least).
yes, I wish she would have told Luffy to go away even more in that scene though, like in the anime, where you see her throwing dirt at him. It had a bigger impact in the anime because of that. Still awesome!
I loved seeing the actors get together and watch that scene together, they were tearing up and jostling her shoulder. Super fucking wholesome. They all love One Piece so much lol!

34:45 Hearing oak talk about not being able to wait for the next season is exactly how us manga readers feel like waiting for the new chapter after a break week lol!
The reason fans are still loyal to the anime version after 1000+ episodes, it's because of the emotions the show invokes, in season two there will be far more heartbreaking stories and more emotions will be invoked.
To the comments on the writing, lets give a shout out to Eichiro Oda. This guy has been writing this story since he was 17! 20+ years later and the story is still strong. The manga(comic book) will ultimately pass superman as the best selling comic book of all time and it was one guy!!!
I wonder how it must feel to have a life with thinking about one Story all the time. Maybe it is like thinking about friends. The feeling behind it must be so strong.
@@YoonglesHollyI think when he started writing the story he already knew what the ending was going to be exactly from the start, remember he's foreshadowing some stuff as far as 500 chapters ahead..
@@erwinlorica4158 Yes. But he wouldn't know every detail. His life must revolve around this each day. And to still like this is remarkable. If I would think about something that much I would start to hate it. He must love it a lot.
@@YoonglesHolly he starves and deprives himself of sleep to have better ideas, sees his daughter and beautiful wife once a week, got ill for diabetes and was hospitilized from overworking. Yet in hostpiat he still worked on OP so when his friend (Naruto author) visited him in hospital he've seen him working and helped him... Oda is amazing but his working ethic is crazy, he is known as a machine among other mangaka that are considered machines......
The hat scene on Nami is the most iconic scene that got most people into this 1080 episode journey. You can really start to see how massive this world might become and how emotional we can potentially get!
I love that scene every time I watch it. Nami finally decides to entrust her treasure (Coco village and its people) to Luffy, so Luffy also entrusts Nami with his treasure until he's able to save hers. Such a deep bond so early on, it really goes to show just how much the Straw Hats, and Luffy especially, care for each other.
Always loved Luffy's response to Nami's "help me." He says "of course I will" comfortingly to her, then again to himself as motivation, and the finally yelling it aloud so the world knows. Love these actors!!!
It's a little different in the anime. The Japanese voice actors watched that scene and didn't understand why he said it three times, but the way you put it makes a lot sense. Once for her, once for himself, and once more so the whole world can hear his determination.
Coz before that its all goofy and stuff, not knowing what youre getting into and how deep the world is. If you convert that to OP episodes being a normal running anime, episode 40 is like ep 4 lol
I liked it from the very beginning but what got me hooked was sanji's story (my very 1st crying session over OP) I was like damn this thing is good fr, by the time nami's story came I was fully invested and sobbing.
I think they mistook Nami's map drawing skills. Nami was reading books on how to draw maps not seeing just maps and copying. So she could draw maps by people's stories about their journies very accurately. E.g. I would go somewhere are say i saw this, I experienced this kind of weather etc and from that info she could accurately draw maps. There are no real maps in One piece world so travel is extremely difficult in OP world. So drawing maps is an amazing ability.
not only that Nami is an incredibly skilled cartographer when it comes to the ocean, she has an innate understanding of how to draw maps to such a degree of accuracy that it was considered by arlong the best map he had ever seen, and it was drawn by a child
Well, the thing about maps in One Piece, it's not like drawing a normal land map, where there are tons of landmarks, and reference points. It's a water world, with islands scattered all over the place. Being able to make an accurate map in that kind of world would require exceptional skill.
Emily Rudd nailed that "help me" scene. That's the part where people watching the anime went from watching the show to becoming invested in the show. That's where you get hooked. You know... you all could react to the anime after this...
when the oak was distressing over how invested he was into this, i totally felt the same when i was first watching the anime series! i was crying and at the edge of my seat when we first get into nami's world and now years later, watching the live action, i'm still getting those same visceral emotions. love your reactions, thank you so much and im so happy you guys are enjoying it! ^.^
Nami essentially makes Rutter's. Which are a combination of nautical charts and maps. Back in the days a lot of land and islands were not mapped out fully. So they needed map makers and navigators to make accurate maps as well make nautical charts that explained the distance between coasts as well as the direction. Nami is talented in this. The one piece world is not fully mapped out especially past the grand line, so they need navigators and mapmakers to be able to sail to destinations.
Almost everybody knew Garp's fullname. Monkey D. Garp that's why Zef and Mihawk knew right away that Garp and Luffy are related after they heard Luffy's Fullname.
The reason (imo) that the emotions strike so much stronger in OP is that, despite the world being so fantastical, the story does an amazing job at making you feel like you're part of the crew. Arlong didn't just mess with some little girl named Nami, he messed with YOUR friend, YOUR navigator. When everyone backed Luffy to march into town, YOU are right there with them. A lot of shows are emotional but there's this inherent wall because you're watching a story. One Piece always feels like you're living a history. And so it causes the same sort of disgust you see when watching historical movies and having to reconcile with, "people really DID that?!"
In the anime/manga, the village knows all about Nami’s secret deal. They only pretend to hate her because they want to give her an out so that she can abandon them and run away if she wants. Nojiko actually got her tattoos so that Nami wouldn’t feel as bad about getting branded by Arlong.
Oda the creator is a magician. He can make you laugh one minute, suddenly make you emotional the other. He can be called a sadist because throughout the series you keep on getting more attached to characters that dont even exist. Not just heroes, but also the antagonists. Everything makes sense when imagined from their perspective. Thats why one piece has no villains, only antagonists. You would be surprised how many times these antagonists switch from being enemies to allies to enemies, based on situation. Thats just something Oda does so easily and perfectly.
What about Orochi or Spandam or Hody Jones or the guys with bubbles (I don’t want to spoil) the guy named Charlos aren’t they villains and not to mention Doflamingo he’s the purest villain there can be in every anime
This is what OP fan mean by OP is one of the best fiction in the world. And the character, the culture, the geopolitic, the conspiracy, the backstory, the history will just get bigger and better. One Piece is really a funny story
In the original, the story is slightly different. Most of the emotional pay-off is the same, but Nami's sister knows, as does the village. There, the stabbing scene is not the result of her losing the money -she intends to regather it all over again- but because the villagers are done seeing Nami slave away for their sake. She's done enough, and they want to free her of her self-assumed responsibility, and she's unable to stop them from marching to their deaths. The scene where Luffy gives her his straw hat ties directly into that: I will go and protect your treasure (=the villagers), while you will protect mine. It is not about saving a damsel in distress (Nami is a damn bad-ass, obviously!) but about friends caring for one another and not being afraid to rely on a friend for something they cannot do on their own. They clearly had to compress the storylines a fair bit throughout the entire season (ep. 8 has rather little in common with the original material) but as a whole, the same story was still told. It is just some of the narrative nuances have gone slightly missing. The pinwheel, for example, is closely associated with the village mayor. You can actually see him during one flashback scene wearing a pinwheel on his head, but that is actually a permanent thing. Young Nami used to be afraid of him, so that was his way of making her smile, and he really was her father figure, which is a nuance that was pretty much lost in the live-action. But they still preserved the pinwheel in another way.
Yea the anime where the villagers were understanding was much better. And they should also explain Nojiko’s tattoo, she did because Nami have one and she wouldn’t feel alone. And was Nami’s support throughout her life. Also give the creator of the orange+pinwheel a RAISE! It’s so creative to put two together and makes sense! it also ties to Nami’s final tattoo!
@@jollygirl94that's the exact comment I have been searching for...Well I am on ep 120 of the anime...and now seeing live action... her sister's tattoo definitely doesn't make sense...and the pinwheel from nami's tattoo has an entirely different story too...
If it was a reasonable option I’d love to see y’all react to the anime where the Netflix show leaves off, but that’s beyond enormous of an ask. Glad this show has brought an even larger community that loves One Piece
They couldn't make it clear in this adaptation but the fishman have a gridlock on the seas around this island sinking anyone or thing coming or going so there would have been no where for kid Nami or Nojiko to go and Belmare knew they would eventually been caught and killed so she sacrificed herself while also proving her love to her girls.
They omit Moo Moo. They use their sea beast as a deterrent for people coming to the island. Luffy beats Moo Moo and tames it and that's why they were able yo land on the island in the first place
Luffy putting his hat on Nami's head is so significant, because the Straw Hat is the greatest treasure of Luffy which he would never give anyone. It is one of the best scene of Anime, Manga and Netflix show!
Dont know how many times i cried watching the help me scene, anime and adaptation combined. Emily rudd was perfect casting to play nami, very hard scene to deliver in real life. And as always enjoy watching with you again, you guys became my favorite reaction channel really fast. Also, now that we know robin and crocodile will be part of season 2 i just say i want to live.
So awesome to see you guys enjoying the story so far. Oda, one piece's author, is just like that... It seems like you've just realized the reason why it's the most popular comic book of all time. The way he has been sucker punching everyone for over two decades is different 😅 One piece is silly, joyful, exciting, emotional, deep and sad. But If anyone had told you this before you watch the show, you would never believed.
One of the things that kinda gets skimmed past real quick in the LA is the one rule with Arlong's crew is never lying about or messing around with money. It's set up a bit clearer in the anime so Nami has every belief that Arlong is going to honor his agreement because that's basically the one rule. Arlong using Nazumi to "steal" her savings instead of doing it himself(or just flat not honoring the agreement) is a workaround of the rules so he can claim his hands aren't dirty.
As a writer myself, it never ceases to amaze me how so much “good money after bad” is thrown into movies and shows that are so poorly written. It’s about bloody time we as an audience got a well-written show for a change.
You should read the manga, the story is even better in the manga. Belle-mère is badass and her sacrifice is better written. Genzo, the scar guy is also such a good character. He did his best to protect everyone. He's really like a father figure to Nami in a way.

@@ariqsyafwan4987 Wow, I didn't state that the live adaptation was bad. It's pretty good, but not perfect. I'm just encouraging people to read the source material, because if they liked the live action, they' ll probably will like the source material that is better written and have detail in certain characters and their stories, like Chouchou for example or Hachi on the long run. But ok, you do you.
A correction: Zoro was not holding buggy's hat, it was his hair wrapped in that cloth. Buggy has really long, beautiful blue hair and he keeps them away from his face, either wrapped up in a cloth or above his hat. Nami scene was where people actually started to watch one piece closely. And this was just a beginning step. After that each character's story goes harder and the series keeps getting better. This east blue saga before the grand line is just a teaser of a trailer. Thank you for your reactions!
Asking for help from anyone is the last thing Nami would do because of her experience in life and to ask Luffy for help is the biggest gesture from her and Luffy giving her Shanks hat is equally the biggest gesture from him. My favorite moment so far
The orignal author was part of the production team and held creative control over any changes to the story. The Live Action of One Piece is pretty rushed with a lot of content in the manga that had to be cut and streamlined, but im honestly shocked how well the spirit of the show was still preserved. Eiichiro Oda is a legend.
When I watched the backstory in the anime, it broke me. Nami asking for help... broke me as well. The live action gave me the exact same feelings that the original did so many years ago! I was even surprised and brought to tears even though I knew what was coming. The live action is worthy of the original, and your reactions attested to that!
Cartography isn't just about tracing lines, though. Nami's also the navigator, she sees details of coastlines and she can calculate things the others can't.
I had to start laughing when The Oak started talking about not expecting to be emotionally invested to the characters and stories, because so many people who get into One Piece say the same thing lol. Oda does a great job giving you the entire rollercoaster of the emotional spectrum.
Im a psychologist and im as mad to Arlong as the OAK, the series are very good and in the anime i can tell you its worse about the story of this arc but its an amazing anime
The way Arlong became the way he is, is also sad. Because of misunderstanding, his captain died by the hands of humans which sealed his hatred for humans more. It’s generational racism that led to Nami’s village being one of the targets.
Are you fr? everyone knows the story was better in the anime or manga. the show has to rush things so they didn’t add as much and couldn’t flesh out characters in the show as much as the manga or anime..
Emily Rudd absolutely gives the number 1 performance of the Summer. She embraces the best parts of Nami and gives part of herself to the character. I do wish Bellmere’s name was mentioned, because it is one my all time favorite anime names
One Piece is a journey of emotions and sensations, very well done and that touches all aspects of people, it even includes a lot of topics that were untouchable a few years ago, now they are easier to handle. It has been out for more than 20 years, and each season has a deep theme, fun and teachings about people and life, captured in an incredible way.
Truly correct what Mason said... Even in the Anime it really goofy, but when the emotions hit, you'll cry even for a burning ship sinking into the ocean. That's why this series beloved by millions of fans across the globe. And still going strong even after 1000 chapters of Manga or 1000 episodes of Anime. It has conquer Manga / Comic industry, Anime still strong even competing with new generation, now it will conquer Live Action / TV Series...
Seeing how they're reacting to only episode 7 about the psychology of these characters and villains, i can't wait for season 2 when they meet Crocodile
Your reactions for this series have been some of the best I've seen. You are engaged and paying attention to what you're watching and not just trying to think something funny to say, so you aren't missing completely obvious stuff or getting confused because you weren't paying attention. You also are clearly having fun and have actual things to say about what is happening. I've been really enjoying watching you watch OPLA.
If you guys are up for it, you should watch the original flashback from the anime. They’ve changed a few things in the Netflix adaptation, but the original is a lot harsher in a different way. Also for berri conversions, berri follows the Japanese yen currency. If you ignore the current rate of yen and go to what is was in the past, it’s about…. 100 berri= 100 yen = 1$ so 100,000 berri= 100,000 yen= 1000$
Its just easier to tell people to do it this way so they get a rough estimate value without having to bring in a calculator and stuff. Cause I know it makes it easier for me to do it this way when I'm out shopping. @@Modelero

@7:16, Charting is actually a skillset that requires more than eyeballing stuff. Ex Navy here, so can confirm there is a fair bit that goes into learning navigation, let alone charting as a skillset alone.
26:37 that scene where Luffy and the crew show up to help Nami where they all standing around in the forest actually happened in the anime almost exactly down to the detail.
Glad you guys are loving this. As a One Piece fan I think it's amazing. By the way Oak, if you don't think you can wait till season 2, there are always 1000+ episodes of anime which is where this awesome story you are loving came from ;). With 7 live action episodes, you are now 37 anime episodes into the story.
Watching the Anime since 2006, Nami Backstory in the Anime was so extremely powerful, i was suicidal growing up but as silly as it sounds One Piece is very special to me , it saved my life growing up, Nami Backstory is definitely the most impactful backstory during that time, and what made me fall deeply in love of the Series of One Piece and it's Incredible Story. 100 thanks again for another great reaction video, it was very entertaining! :) peace.
I genuinely think Eiichiro Oda is one of the best storytellers/writers of our time. There are so many One Piece fans across the world, so many people from different cultures and backgrounds that have been hitched to this story for a decade or more. This isn't luck, it's pure talent. I remember that feeling you are trying to describe, I felt it too, 12 years ago. And I've been waiting for new chapters every week since then.
Id say "of our time" is an understatement. Especially considering that other writers take years to write their story and constantly revise it. Oda is working week to week for over 25 years.
@@MFZBitchTo be fair most writers also tell more concise stories. The best thing about the live action is being able to retroactively condense the story to its core essentials.
3:23 is a great moment where you really get to see how long you guys have been together. Just finishing each other's sentences. That makes me wonder, how long have you all known each other before making content?
When they announced this series, my only concern was that they had to do the "Luffy, help me" scene exactly the same, down to the shot of all the rest of the Strawhats waiting for Luffy's word. And they ABSOLUTELY NAILED IT!! When I saw the shot of Zoro, Sanji, and Usopp chillin in the cut, waiting for Luffy to tell them to run Arlong's pockets, I was so hyped!
As a first time viewer that shot of the boys waiting with the music cue just tied the whole scene together for me. It's dramatically important for just Luffy and Nami to have the whole scene where we focus on one betrayed friend choosing to help the traitor. But then to take that warm feeling and carry it through by having the whole crew ready to do the same brings it to another level beyond
With regards to the map part, that was so insightful and a very valid question (that's why I love Oak). But just for your information (and this is not a spoiler) the grandline is huge, like way huge. And the map they got is just a part of it. Not to mention very few ever come back form the grand line, and those have by some miracle come back and plotted some parts of it tend to be secretive and none sharing of their information. That's why there's very few of it around. And in the anime, not stated in the live action, Zeff had a full journal of his voyage to the grandline and intended to give it to luffy for his reference but luffy being luffy refused to accept it.
It's not explained in the show, and not a spoiler so I don't know why they left it out, but Garp's name is Monkey D Garp. He is just known to the public as Garp the hero or Garp the fist, but anyone who knows him personally, and meets luffy, will know they are related by the family name. That's why Zeff and Mihawk knew immediately
the final episode is such a ride in every way possible. As a long time fan of the anime, i was tearing up all the time. Its mindblowing how a show can make people feel so strong emotions
One last ride with you guys. Such a superb reaction. If you got moved Nami's story, I think you gotta prepare for Season 2 cause more heartbreaking stories. 😊
That's why Eiichiro Oda is the best writer I've ever seen. He's a genius! He created this whole One Piece world for more than 25 years and still going. If you read the original, you'll be amazed at how unbelievable brilliant this series is. One Piece is not just a manga or anime for kids, this is a masterpiece with lots of deeper stories 💜
when you all felt angry and emotional with arlong and nami's back story I remember all the moments in one piece that made me feel this way for a lot of ways and reasons, and its refreshing to see from people who are not expose to the one piece anime/manga this feelings that Oda makes you feel for the first time in this long running show. the reason why Mihawk and Zeff knew about Luffy being related to Garp is assuming they know Garp's full name being Monkey D Garp and Luffy kept saying his full name, that made a connections perhaps.
The showrunners did such a great job at demonstrating the depths of One Piece! The story is outrageous and imaginative and campy and fun, it sometimes feels hard to imagine OP can ever feel too "serious". And yet whenever the storyline introduces darker themes like racism, prejudice, persecution, tyranny, corruption, loss of loved ones, etc., it does so with so much seriousness and painful awareness of how these things affect the characters and the world at large.
Oda is the goat!!! he knows what he's doing. i love your reaction guys! Glad i found your channel. One piece will always be my fave anime of all time. The back story, and evey little detail is amazing. final ep next lesgoooow! ❤
Definitely should give anime a shot, definitely rollercoaster of emotions it will put you through. Make you root for characters, laugh and cry. Wait until you meet Hordy Jones though let's hope the live action gets that far.
Aside from pirates, and people that work for the world government (like the marines) most people dont travel outside of their island or country unless they “need” to. Maps are only relevant to sailors. Islands (if they care) may have a map of the island they are on or maybe local areas, maybe. Having a reliable map maker is a god send in some parts of the world
So a big shout out to Oda the original writer and creator of this series, and a shout out to the showruners and writers of the Netflix series for adapting his original story to live action so well. Can't wait to see your reactions to the last episode!!
The writers of this show are great, but all praise has to go to the original creater Oda. The "help me" scene and Nami's story is taken directly from the manga and anime.
it's happening again, the Harry Potter effect strikes Oak once again! 😂 no but it's great ya'll enjyoing this as much as we anticipated you would. As you guys pointed out already, that is the effect great writing will have on one. They absolutely nailed it from start to end. One of the best tv shows out there, not only as an adaption but also in general. The way they make you connect with and feel for the characers in such a short amount of time, make the characters feel realistic is impressive. And thank you for giving credit to the make up/ pactical effects team. I agree, I really love the fact they're trying to do as much as they can in- camera without CGI. Not only the make up/prothetics but the sets as well. Also one reason you feel way more immersed in the story and the world right off the bat. I don't know imo it just adds so much more quality to the show
7:07 Smartest man ever and the only other person to acknowledge the dumb plot line. It was the main plot device behind the buggy encounter. The entire time I was saying "Why are yall fighting over something that can easily be copied?" Nami could have made 10 copies of that map since they're just chilling and sailing on a boat for weeks on end. Second buggy was like "gimmie that map or die" she could have been like "k here bye"
"how am I so emotional?" yeah, One Piece is like that. other things the series is known for people getting super emotional over include a whale, a boat, and a man in a baby costume, to name a few
Luffy’s the captain because he has the ability to truly listen. He listened very carefully to anything that’s about his friends. When he first met Nami she told him rhat she hated pirates and he believed her. That’s why he never lost faith in her while Zoro the simpleton gave up way too quickly.
i have so much fun watching one piece with you guys!! i think you guys would love to see the behind the scenes of how some of the effects were done, they tried to do a lot of practical stuff!
I KNOW you gentlemen would totally fall in love with the One Piece anime… it delivers way more on every aspect you have been enjoying from the live action and would seriously enjoy watching you react to it
To reduce your dispise ,half of these fishmen were enslaved as children , sold , got brandmarked , fled the world gov. , got hunted by the marines , survived because their captain works now as samurai for the marines. And after that they decided to recreate the humantrafic-tradehouse which is now their base at cocos.
I think part of why One Piece is able to hit so hard when it gets sad or serious is because comedy, goofiness, and fun are baked into its core. It IS disarming, and when you're used to these high highs it means that you fall even greater distances when you reach the low lows. And then, after you've really felt those deep, impactful emotions, those core positive elements of the show are able to bring you back up and prevent you from just wallowing in those depths. And, by doing so, it sets you up for the next deep emotional moment to flatten you like a mack truck. The original author, Oda, is a MASTER of storytelling. After all, he's been writing and drawing the same comic, telling the same story for over 25 years, and it's still incredibly good and more popular now than ever. And it is a testament to the writers and show-runners that they've been able to adapt such an immense story and be able to capture the essence of it to still be able to convey that story well. Also, in case you want to see how Nami's backstory played out in the manga/anime and through the hat scene, that would be episodes 35-37. If you want, give it a watch and you'll see why so many fans of the anime/manga were desperately hoping that they nailed these scenes. And, for the most part, I think they did. And it'll also showcase how dark and serious the anime/manga can actually get (despite the goofy-looking art) because, yeah, the live action actually toned DOWN those scenes.
The Nami crying scene is THE One Piece scene in the anime as well. It's wildly known to be THE episode of One Piece that, if you make it that far (wanna say episode 34ish?) you will be hooked.
Yeah, when it comes to the anime, Arlong Park is typically a strong hook to get the fans to stay. Though, in the anime, it didn't reveal the reason for his supremacy ideas. The live action shows this early instead of being revealed in the later arc. It helps you understand why he became that way, but still doesn't excuse the evils that he did(Arlong, I mean).
In the anime, this episode and it's emotional impact are where a lot of people truly fall in love with the story. And believe it or not, in the anime it hits about three times harder, due to some small changes in the live action.
well, nowadays maps are cheap and we have the whole world mapped, but that was not only the case, and also is the level of detail and precision, think about it, the one with better maps have a huge advantage, you wouldn't just give away; this is also established in the first episode, the whole mess was just to get a map. Of course there are more common maps, but again, the detail and how updated it is are important factors.
Yes, but grandline map plot are kinda stupid, its not really secret path, n arlong not really need that because he dont want back to grandline for moment.
33:50 if theres anyone you gotta acknowledge for this story its oda. the writers for the show did a good job of translating it to live action, but dont get it wrong; the story, the scenes, and the heart: it is one piece, the story oda wrote. i love how much you are enjoying the show, great reaction!
Regarding maps. This world is mostly water and uncharted. We are bias to a world where all the maps are already charted. Imagine early Columbus trying to find America
The reason the OGs know that Luffy is his grandson is because Garp's full name is Monkey D. Garp. When Luffy introduces himself all the time using his family name it's clear to those that are familiar with Garp.
This is a masterpiece by Eiichiro Oda who is the creator of the manga and he has created an amazing beautiful world & it can definitely be a roller-coaster of emotions, it also helps that he helped make sure that Netflix followed very closely to the original material and helped pick these actors for these characters
Honestly the live did such a good job!!! But definitely the manga hits way WAYYYY deeper in the heart. Nami's original backstory is actually even more sad than what is portrayed (as is all of theirs). Oda, the story writer, started at age 17 and is PHENOMENAL. I recommend reading over the anime, but I grew up reading manga so I can fly through it 😂 might be too long for someone just starting.

The writer you're really praising is Eichiro Oda. He's been delivering for over 25 years.
Really want this known too - while not to take away from the way the writers here have helped to adapt it to TV/Netflix, all the major story points/beats and emotional impact written came from Eiichiro Oda. That's why it was so easy to make a great show - all of it was laid out already!
The netflix writers did well too. Having to create an awesome live action of one piece with its own difference and working with oda is a huge success.
Oda's writing and artwork are top notch, he can draw the characters emotion so intensely. Nami's crying face is always makes me teary eyed. Reading the manga I cried many times, while watching the LA I just feel a bit sad.
Something to remember as well, this story is written on a week to week basis for around 25 years now
Also gotta give respect to the team who made this tv show, they learned to listen to Oda, and go with the source material, they coulda went like others did, and do their own thing, and it would ahve sucked, but they didnt, hopefully they stick to that in S2 and onward.
True
skill issue bellmere can't even lie properly like her daughter jk lol
If you remember too, Bellemere struck Nami as a child for denying they were a family. This is one of those things that there just wasn’t enough time to translate into the live action. That whole moment happened just after Bellemere punishes Nami for that denial so she can’t very well deny her daughters right in front of her
Their situation / state of poverty is also a result of how the world government doesnt actually give 2 shits about ex-marines. Just like how you find vaterans homeless and on the streets. The world uses you for all you're worth then spits you out once you've served your purpose. There is no honour no matter which side of the law you stand on
yeah exactly if well lets be real when arlong found out the kids would of been killed
"THIS IS THE BEST EPISODE" said everyone in every episode ✌🏻😂
In the anime, Luffy walks away and doesn't listen to Nami's sister story, so when Luffy replies to Nami "Yeah, I don't know what's going on" he really has no clue about Nami's backstory, he just wants to help her regardless of what happened
all he knows is she is working for her mothers killer that is all he does not know about her deal or anything so he still doesn't know her story.
Luffy still doesn't know about her deal with Arlong or him double-crossing her, so he really DOESN'T know what's going on in that moment.
he also literally just punches through the wall and goes "which one of you assholes is arlong?"
"Which one of you is Arlong?"
That's not exactly true. She told him she needed 100M to buy a village when they first met and he knows she hates pirates bc they killed sm1 dear to her bc she said that when they were fighting Buggy (in the manga, at least).
The actor playing Arlong is absolutely dominating that role!
Emily was incredible. I really could feel that pain in her screams and the way she said "help me" was absolutely great
yes, I wish she would have told Luffy to go away even more in that scene though, like in the anime, where you see her throwing dirt at him. It had a bigger impact in the anime because of that. Still awesome!
I loved seeing the actors get together and watch that scene together, they were tearing up and jostling her shoulder. Super fucking wholesome. They all love One Piece so much lol!

Never thought about it like that. Makes it that much better fr
It's a little different in the anime. The Japanese voice actors watched that scene and didn't understand why he said it three times, but the way you put it makes a lot sense.
Once for her, once for himself, and once more so the whole world can hear his determination.

“Help me” is the reason people say “oh you gotta wait like 40 episodes then it gets really good”
I like OP since episode 4 xddd
Coz before that its all goofy and stuff, not knowing what youre getting into and how deep the world is. If you convert that to OP episodes being a normal running anime, episode 40 is like ep 4 lol
I liked it from the very beginning but what got me hooked was sanji's story (my very 1st crying session over OP) I was like damn this thing is good fr, by the time nami's story came I was fully invested and sobbing.
I was told exactly this almost 20 years ago. Nami's plea for help, and the walk to Arlong Park, definitely made me fall in love with the show.
One minor flaw, not well explained here, but maybe season 2 will explain it better
Well, the thing about maps in One Piece, it's not like drawing a normal land map, where there are tons of landmarks, and reference points. It's a water world, with islands scattered all over the place. Being able to make an accurate map in that kind of world would require exceptional skill.
Indeed, when we entered the Grand Line everything explain itself I guess. Nami's skills started to shine in Reverse Mountain. @@galonski64
To be perfectly honest, just being able to accurately COPY maps is an impressive skill. Like, Nami can do MORE than that, but yeah.
Emily Rudd nailed that "help me" scene. That's the part where people watching the anime went from watching the show to becoming invested in the show. That's where you get hooked.
You know... you all could react to the anime after this...
Yes they should for sureee
This!
Would watch 💯
when the oak was distressing over how invested he was into this, i totally felt the same when i was first watching the anime series! i was crying and at the edge of my seat when we first get into nami's world and now years later, watching the live action, i'm still getting those same visceral emotions. love your reactions, thank you so much and im so happy you guys are enjoying it! ^.^
The backstories become even more emotional as the series goes on.
It truely is the modern Odysse
That "Help Me" scene in the anime is where most of the people became fan of One Piece Emily did amazing job bringing it to LA.
I wish it wasn't at night though.
That strawhat meant so much for Luffy. Giving that to Nami has much deeper meaning. i just love Oda's writing man and its just the beginning.

YES, please!

Oda, one piece's author, is just like that... It seems like you've just realized the reason why it's the most popular comic book of all time.
The way he has been sucker punching everyone for over two decades is different 😅
One piece is silly, joyful, exciting, emotional, deep and sad.
It alo shows she was very young, and belive it would work out too
Let’s goooo Nami time to shine and we are so close to the end omg letsssssss!!!!! Goooooooooooo!!!!! Man I’m going to miss this 😊
As a writer myself, it never ceases to amaze me how so much “good money after bad” is thrown into movies and shows that are so poorly written. It’s about bloody time we as an audience got a well-written show for a change.

The yen-usd rate back when one piece started was 120¥ = 1 $ so the conversions are around 20% less than the "direct" one

Also its likely the marines gaurd the info on it as well as map copies and burn extras to prevent more pirates from going there.
Yes, choper and hiluluk😢
That's why Eiichiro Oda is the best writer I've ever seen. He's a genius! He created this whole One Piece world for more than 25 years and still going. If you read the original, you'll be amazed at how unbelievable brilliant this series is. One Piece is not just a manga or anime for kids, this is a masterpiece with lots of deeper stories 💜
Oda is a GENIUS storyteller ❤❤❤ punches you in the heart literally for every arc, every character
when you all felt angry and emotional with arlong and nami's back story I remember all the moments in one piece that made me feel this way for a lot of ways and reasons, and its refreshing to see from people who are not expose to the one piece anime/manga this feelings that Oda makes you feel for the first time in this long running show.
the reason why Mihawk and Zeff knew about Luffy being related to Garp is assuming they know Garp's full name being Monkey D Garp and Luffy kept saying his full name, that made a connections perhaps.
Love the reaction. This show definitely exceeded my expectations and can't wait for the next season.
The japanese name Nezumi translates to Rat, a turncoat, traitor...and both the actress for Nami did a great job!
it's happening again, the Harry Potter effect strikes Oak once again! 😂
no but it's great ya'll enjyoing this as much as we anticipated you would.
For context the currency of one piece is Berry and a 100 Berry is worth 1USD so a 100k is like 1k and Nami had to steal a million dollars.
I KNOW you gentlemen would totally fall in love with the One Piece anime… it delivers way more on every aspect you have been enjoying from the live action and would seriously enjoy watching you react to it
I haven’t seen anyone mention it so here’s a fun fact in Japanese Usopp means liar and storyteller and Nezumi means mouse or rat
One piece is the best fiction story ever told
And it'll also showcase how dark and serious the anime/manga can actually get (despite the goofy-looking art) because, yeah, the live action actually toned DOWN those scenes.
now you guys can understand why so many would watch 1000 episodes of this story 😂
"I was not ready for this kind of emotion from this show"
Oh trust me it gets even more emotional.
Edit: also Jinbe name drop!
Bellemere refusing to deny her daughters is HEARTBREAKING, WHY ODA WHY
THANK YOU! I was literally late from my break at work watching this lol worth it! This and the next episodes are amazing!!!!
It’s so cool u feel that way in caring only through 7 Ep. Imagine through 1000(anime) U feel so connected with all the crew and their struggles, it’s so personal and relatable
“Yeah, I don’t know about that waiter.”
Perfect line
