Exactly. Someone asks for the toilet, and that is the most objective and specific way you could ask for it, even though it isn't what native speakers use. It's clear what room the passenger wants help finding, even if the passenger didn't use the words the flight attendant had in mind.
Only place I could see asking "where are the toilets" could be misunderstood, is in a hardware store like Home Depot. The employee wouldn't know whether the customer wants the toilets for sale, or the already-installed toilets for customers to use. If I worked in a hardware store, I would instinctively think "where are the toilets?" would mean "where are the toilets for sale?", in contrast from "where is the bathroom?".

The word bathroom is normally reserved for rooms with bathtubs or showers typically inside homes. But people mix it up all the time. Anything outside of your house in a public place can referred to as restroom, toilet or even bathroom. It's all interchangeable.😅
