I saw your comment and decided to look it up myself. Here is what I found. Yes, Fusion reactors explode like a conventional bomb when they are built improperly and reach the threshold limit or they are attacked and damaged during their cycle process. The reason is that they require intense atmospheric pressures to achieve power-output from a working fusion design. They usually use magnetic fields, or physical pressure, or a combination of both to achieve these intense pressures. The vast majority of “massive” experimental reactors, today, are far too insufficient to achieve meaningful fusion power. The pressures are simply too low. This is why most people who answer this question will say “no” as the answer. The truth is that if we want to achieve fusion we need to seriously venture into the realm of high pressures. Currently, I see Los Alamos National Lab doing that right now with their Plasma Jet Driven Magneto-Inertial Fusion project, as well Lockheed-Martin/Skunk works with their Compact Fusion Reactor. It’s interesting and important to note that the primary perspective of a working model of fusion is fixated around the “Z pinch” concept. What Z pinch means is an electrical current that’s moving in a straight line, such as through a copper wire, induces a magnetic field around that copper wire that is capable of “pinching” that copper wire and compressing it. This can be done with a simple metal pipe: if you send a powerful enough electrical current through it it will deform the pipe as if the pipe were being compressed by a powerful force. This is how plasma works: it’s constantly generating new electrical currents and associated magnetic fields that compress that plasma and push it around. Inherently, what this means is that plasma loves exploding when it’s intensely pinched and prevented from moving around. This is the same physics of how explosions work! Therefore, fusion reactors are more likely to explode than fissile reactors although they will not release any meaningful radiation if cracked open.
@@TheMr5x the plasma going to damage the hull of the reactor and heat down instantly, melting a shit tone of REALLY EXPENSIVE components inside. So yes, they don't explode like fission reactors, but no they will do a lot of damage to repair it and THE DO EMIT RADIATION, this is THE HALF OF THE REASON PEOPLE CAN'T GET IT TO WORK CONTINUOUSLY because inner components gonna get irradiated and fail, but that's the problem for the future, now we need just to get it working on it's power output.
@@TheMr5x exploding is just a rapid expansion of gas which usually causes a shockwave which we hear as aloud bang. Whether there is fire or not is irrelevant. Actually fire is simply just combustion of gases but can increase intensity of an explosion if it's kept confined before the actual explosion.
Removing the blanket caused the containment to melt on one side, causing a - comparatively - small hole and extinguishing the reaction inside near instantly. It's not a literal explosion in that sense, but it's nice to have a way of giving people a visual and auditory indicator of it breaking while also removing some blocks in the process.
