I was in the audience for the CND concert in Brockwell park too. Great to see this footage for the first time. John Peel was the DJ and the Damned also performed.
I remember this. It was great to have been there and amazing to see this 35 years later. If I remember correctly most people seemed a bit baffled my Paul Weller's'new direction' with the Style Council who provided a short and sweet(ish) set. I think Madness stole the show; they were hitting a peak at the time.
"This one is for Cath", says Weller. He was talking about Cathy, who worked in the Youth CND office in Finsbury Park and who, like all of us there, was a massive Jam and Paul Weller fan. We had been promising her that we'd try and get him to dedicate a song to her... not thinking he would.... but he did. In the lead up to the event, he was so generous with his time and contacts - I don't think we'd have got all those bands to play if the Style Council hadn't signed up. They were brand now, only had a few tracks done, and they didn't really need to do it, but he firmly believed in the cause. The Damned fans were attrocious, but the band members were really brilliant, and they completely understood the situation, trying at one point to calm down their disgruntled and very drunk fans as the mob started to dismantle the front of the stage (lent to us by Glastonbury festival). Worth a mention, too, is Annajoy David, who was in Youth CND and who first thought up the idea of doing a free music festival.
this is great, I missed their set that day, I was only 9 and on rollerskates somewhere else in park (up the hill I think). caught madness later on though. still got the poster
Jonathan, point of correction, it wasn't an RAR gig. Youth CND and the GLC (sponsors). RAR had another gig in Victoria Park, I think the same summer. And probably others in Brockwell Park, but by 1983 the ANL and RAR were less active compared to CND. Great vid, and thanks so much for posting!

You’re correct about Madness, they were at the peak of their game live in 1983.

Ah pop and politics remember that seems like a lifetime ago.
Bass player doesn't start until 30 seconds in
It looked as though the bass wasn't plugged in, or he was having some other malfunction...
Anyone know the precise date of this event?
Andy JS 7th of May which is my birthday.
@@paulgrahamedwardspencer6393 That was the day the 1983 election was announced I think.
