  • Joseph O’Brien is star of the show in Betfair’s newly released film ‘Serial Winners’, which documents his career in racing from jockey to trainer, and the challenges he’s faced being part of the famous O’Brien family, one of the biggest names in the sport.
Including testimonials from the likes of Kevin Blake, Kevin O’Ryan and Ted Walsh, the mini-documentary looks to get the inside track on racing’s most exciting young trainer and is the third edition of Betfair’s ‘Serial Winners’ catalogue, having already documented 10-time Champion trainer, Paul Nicholls and former Heavyweight Champion of the World, David Haye.
After riding his first winner less than a week after turning 16 - while he was still attending school - O’Brien went on to have a successful early career as a high-class rider.
Riding Camelot in 2012, he and his father became the first father-and-son trainer and jockey duo to win at the Derby. He also had significant wins at the Ascot Gold Cup, 2000 Guineas and Irish Derby, amongst another huge race wins worldwide including in the USA and UAE.
At almost six-foot tall, O’Brien’s ongoing challenges to make racing weight saw him step off the saddle in 2016 and focus on his other passion, training horses.
At the age of just 26, O’Brien has achieved so much as a trainer already, winning the Irish Derby, The Melbourne Cup and The Fillies’ Mile in recent times. The film describes the focus, driven personality and natural instinct that make him a world-class operator in a truly global sport.
Commenting on the documentary, Betfair ambassador Joseph said: ‘’I'm very grateful to have achieved what I have to date in my career, both in and out of the saddle. None of it would have been possible without all the support from my family and the team here on Owning Hill. I think this documentary gives a fair reflection of what we do here and the attitude we approach our lives with. Hopefully it’s only the first chapter of our story.”
Agent Kevin O’Ryan, discussing O’Brien’s potential, said, “What he’s achieved in a very short period of time has been exceptional, I think this is only the beginning. Fast forward twenty years, what will Joseph O’Brien have achieved by then? It could be phenomenal.”

typical. I saw the same thing in American steeplechasing. the kid was great. came from a great training father. became a good trainer himself after riding very impressively. but all they wanted to do was crank the rumor mill and talk smack. it was all lies. all of it. they were hideously jealous. what made it worse was he was good looking. glad he overcame the BS and succeeded.

You said it yourself “just as good” , if the others aren’t better than your son why aren’t you going to give him the rides?
