The way the blog post accompanies the video is really nice. It's cool to be able to go over there and check the OG instructions/go through the citations and head down a little rabbit hole. I listened to this one while weaving and now have the blog open in a tab so I can read more later. Smart, love it!
My favorite thing about the granny square is I know I can finish one in a short amount of time. I can learn a new stitch or a new skill and complete something without having to commit to a whole project.
Watching this as I am finishing the granny square blanket my grandma started in the 70's then set aside. I have all of the original yarn to complete it. Thank you for this fascinating history.
I appreciate granny squares as a novice crocheter because they're versatile and nicely delineated. You get lots of easy wins as opposed to larger patterns, and if you have to change plans, you don't have to lose weeks or months of work. Let's say I had big ideas for a holiday sweater, but later realized there's no way I'll be done in time... after I've already made half the pattern. Using a standard crochet pattern, I now have an awkward half a sweater. Using a granny square pattern, I now have a scarf.
My first crochet project was a granny square blanket. This was in the eighties and over the years I was sorry to see it lose popularity. Now it’s back in style and I’m loving it !! Thank you for all this granny info 🥰
Hi from Ireland and thank you for this great video.i love granny squares the colour combinations are endless you can get a lot done over a period of time and they mount up.i have blankets and throws all over the place .I also make for family members.i really enjoyed learning about the granny history.💖💖💖
This is so interesting! Thank you for making this video. I only got into granny squares very recently (been crocheting on and off for many years but never tried GSs before) and your channel has already helped and inspired me a lot!
I just made a granny square blanket for my daughter. I enjoyed it because the square are easy and I can put it down and not lose my place. It was a lot of fun. It look we a week to make. I made 49 squares 8” and I used 5 colors.
I have a funny relationship to granny squares. I think I don’t really like them, but I’m always drawn to them. I was crocheting in the ‘70s so there’s certainly a nostalgic feeling for them. But then I also love the more modern ‘Square Scramble Sweater’ (on Ravelry) for instance. I do enjoy seeing how they’re re-envisioned every generation or so. They’re a simple yet infinitely adaptable motif. 🧶🦋
I'm a knitter who decided to try and learn to crochet as well. The granny square is the easiest thing for me to learn so far, and they are so fun with all the colors. I love that there are so many projects you can make with them. Which is good for me, since it is the only thing I have been able to perfect so far. Lol
Thanks for all this history, it was very interesting to me. I've been crocheting for 60 years and have made many a granny square! I enjoy them in all their amazing variety.
That was great! Ive learned so much and feel even more inspired to do some GS projects. Thank you for making this video. I am sure it was a lot of work.
I absolutely loathe granny squares! I think it’s because I connect it with the horrible styles of the 60s and 70s. Plus, my own granny made me one of those gawdawful vests every year out of super cheap Red Heart acrylic. You know the one that every elementary kid wore on school picture day through the 70s, the one big continuous square for front and back with small squares over the shoulders. I am a crochet maniac and am never even tempted to use the traditional granny square. Thanks for all the history! ❤
I grew up in the 70s. There was some truly awful crochet around and I absolutely detested it, especially the awful 'granny square '. Decades later, I came to appreciate the therapeutic nature of crochet, especially enjoying deeply textured stitches like waffle grids and bobbles. I have just taken to granny squares this year (although I still hate the name) and am near completion of a jacket for myself. I'd never had expected to be enjoying it like this 😊
Personally, I hate Granny Squares. Tacky isn’t quite the word I would use but they just remind me of all the gross stuff from the 70s, like the hideous floral patterned velvet couches and baby sh*t yellow appliances and horrible pea soup green shag carpets. The squares themselves aren’t tacky per se but remind me of a time when tacky was “in”. Some things, like granny squares, and granny panties and high wasted jeans, and some of the fragrances I smell on young women now- I grew up in the 80s and 90s, and no matter how popular some things get, I can’t understand them. High wasted panties gross me out no matter who is in them because that’s what my grandma wore and it will never ever be sexy to me. I can’t see high wasted jeans without thinking of mom jeans that, again, were the opposite of sexy. I swear some of the most popular scents right now smell exactly like my grandmother’s perfume or worse- like her bathroom. Granny squares look homemade in a bad way. Any homemade clothing or textiles used to mean you were poor and would get you made fun of, or worse. I have never and will never be interested in making a granny square unless it has a really creative or unique twist. Otherwise it falls into the same category to me as puke green and granny thunder pants and mom jeans and antique floral perfumes with notes of old lady farts.
I understand completely. Your description of 70s stuff is perfect! However they are very satisfying to make and you never know when enough time may have passed to see them in a new light?

That totally makes sense - and yea I love seeing how creators reinvent them 🤗✨

Very well done. Very interesting. I am not a big fan, though I appreciate the history and adaptability of the granny square. 😊
Thanks so much! I appreciate you watching 🤗 It's very interesting indeed ✨
I don't hate the granny square. I'm just adverse to some of the color choices used in the making of them.
lol fine distinction - I totally get it ✨
I learned some new things about granny squares. What an interesting history ❤ thanks
Of course - I'm happy you appreciated it 💕
I absolutely loved this episode. I always wondered about the granny square history. Thank you
Granny squares are definitely a classic!!! And because there’s so many variations there’s something for everyone (or at least most people)
That was great! Ive learned so much and feel even more inspired to do some GS projects. Thank you for making this video. I am sure it was a lot of work.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it 🤗✨
Cool and great mini documentary! ❤

I am not a fan of thr Granny Square but I am using my scraps to make a continous Granny square blanket.
I love using it for that as well for sure 🤗
Where did you get your iPhone holder

Made in acrylic with garish colors = tacky. Made with fashion yarn or thread and with sophisticated tones = fabulous!
I definitely understand 💕
Personally, I hate Granny Squares. Haha wow such strong thoughts 😂
I understand completely. Your description of 70s stuff is perfect!
However they are very satisfying to make and you never know when enough time may have passed to see them in a new light?
Wow, the granny square is controversial? Who knew?
I know right 🤪
Ok I understand people might not like them but idk how they could ever be considered tacky lol.
I know right lol!
Nope. Granny squares are horrible, always, in all applications. They always look like happy hands at home.
lol well there you go - hence why they're controversial.
Neither chic nor tacky.
lol fair enough! ✨
A very few granny squares are lovely /most are tacky/ugly/and in very bad taste/especially when people make them out of awful synthetic cheap yarns!
