  • Juniper, a beloved moose here at the Minnesota Zoo, enjoys an afternoon rest as she lies pondside after taking a dip in the water. Based on the orientation of her ears, it appears she is listening to the frogs’ song as she takes in the spring scenery. Unlike many large, long-legged animals, moose do not travel in herds and often live alone or in small family groups. They like to live in forests, swamps, bogs, or other wetlands where they can find the water plants, shoots, and leaves that constitute their preferred diet. While moose are generally doing fine across their global range, in Minnesota, moose have experienced a period of decline in recent years. The Minnesota Zoo has partnered with researchers across the state to determine possible causes of the drop in numbers.
