    Fun fact: crows can mimick human speech just like parrots, but as they aren't commonly kept as pets like parrots are, they don't usually spend enough time around humans to pick things up. Part of why parrots do is that a pet parrot comes to view the humans it lives with as its social group and naturally mimicks our sounds to try and be a part of things.

    At one point some crows used a short, fat palm at the rear of our back yard as a landing pad. Mourning doves would graze on our garden and dine at our bird feeder, then launch off, often full-force into the transom window over our sliding glass door. One quiet afternoon, a dove splatted particularly forcefully into the taller window. Very plainly, the resident crow intoned “Haw, haw, haw.”

      Yes. Raven. Crows are smaller, thinner, have beaks that look more pointy. And they caw, very annoyingly. Ravens make all kinds of odd sounds like this. Meows, and a weird “cuh-lunk, cuh-lunk” like a muted cow bell. The beaks are more curved on top like this. I see these practically every time I go outside in a coastal Alaskan town. For the last 33 years. 😅

    • @colecampbell1906
      @colecampbell1906 Рік тому +43

      The thing they do with their head is in order to make the sound, it has to do with their syrinx. It lets them control it more. Kinda like if you start humming and either tuck your chin or throw your chin up to the sky, both will change the sound some. They just mess around and try to copy sounds they hear, it takes some practice, so odds are this one is just practicing to try make a sound it heard.

    The crows around here have sophisticated language, and I have even witnessed them having a meeting where one crow led the meeting with clicks and grunts, and every once in a while the entire murder would respond in unison. This went on for about an hour, and there were about 50 crows.

    Nice capture! Yes they are very intelligent and I wouldnt be surprised if they have some sort of limited mimicking ability. This one appears young and adorable, most people don’t like them but I say if they were yellow in colour they would lol. I like the fat plump ones, he looks healthy. Crows not to be mistaken for Ravens their larger cousins. The females during spring make a clicking noise signalling to the females they are ready to mate.

    Imagine it.
    You're a bird doing bird things that has always had a very strange call that separates you from the other birds.
    All of the sudden during your regular Cawing, these massive other animals make strange noises at you, some even sound like your call, and give you attention and gifts.
    Nature is absolutely bonkers sometimes.
