I once had local crows learn to "meow" like a distressed cat. We fed the strays and I guess the crows ate their kibble, too, because when the cat food was empty the crows would meow. I genuinely thought a cat was stuck in a tree or on the roof, but it was just hungry crows. They're so clever!
We had one crow that loved near us that after the fourth of July learned how to make firework sounds. I think it learned fireworks were scary and was using it as a warning call It was so cute. Just this little "preoowww boosh" every few minutes for a couple days
Fun fact: crows can mimick human speech just like parrots, but as they aren't commonly kept as pets like parrots are, they don't usually spend enough time around humans to pick things up. Part of why parrots do is that a pet parrot comes to view the humans it lives with as its social group and naturally mimicks our sounds to try and be a part of things.
@@Bloody_crow Good thing too or else strange people obsessed with having a relationship with birds would start kidnapping them lol. It's illegal here in the UK to take wild birds from their habitat, in a lot of situations even if the bird will die without help, unfortunately because the general public can't be trusted to not try and poach crows for friends lmao. Glad I found this vid. I heard a crow make a similar sound yesterday, except it was repetitive, like a...wooah-wooah-wooah. He did it a few times in a row. Surprised me, as I'd never heard a crow make such a unique sound.
i just heard the same thing from one member of a family around my house, i came to youtube to try to see what it meant lol. also never heard that before... so cool
At one point some crows used a short, fat palm at the rear of our back yard as a landing pad. Mourning doves would graze on our garden and dine at our bird feeder, then launch off, often full-force into the transom window over our sliding glass door. One quiet afternoon, a dove splatted particularly forcefully into the taller window. Very plainly, the resident crow intoned “Haw, haw, haw.”
i don't mean to criticise you, because I can tell you like birds and put out food for them! but crashing into windows can potentially really hurt them. if you or anyone reading this ever have birds around again, pls put some stickers (there are specific ones for this) on the windows to help them out! ❤

While crows have their famous “Caw-Caw” noise (which will sound different depending on their accent), they can make a wide range of sounds- including mimicking human speech. There’s an amazing video of a British crow asking passerbys “You alright? You alright mate?”
I remember there was an African Pied Crow at a wildlife park I went to that liked to say "Whoa-hoa!" and was very happy when you said it back to him. So he and I were gently crooning "Whoa-hoa!" back and forth to each other when this kid runs up and yells "HEY!" And this bird wheeled around and released this demon screech at him, scaring the kid off, and then just turns back to me and very sweetly goes "Whoa-hoa?" My favorite was one time it was making frog noises and my ma kept thinking it was me and thought I was lying about it so she got mad, but then she heard the raven above and laughed her ass off
Yes. Raven. Crows are smaller, thinner, have beaks that look more pointy. And they caw, very annoyingly. Ravens make all kinds of odd sounds like this. Meows, and a weird “cuh-lunk, cuh-lunk” like a muted cow bell. The beaks are more curved on top like this. I see these practically every time I go outside in a coastal Alaskan town. For the last 33 years. 😅
It's definitely very similar sound the nut crow makes. It also makes a very similar gesture of looking down and pulling his head back a bit when making that sound. Maybe it's got the hiccups? Would love to know the explanation for this peculiar behaviour.
The thing they do with their head is in order to make the sound, it has to do with their syrinx. It lets them control it more. Kinda like if you start humming and either tuck your chin or throw your chin up to the sky, both will change the sound some. They just mess around and try to copy sounds they hear, it takes some practice, so odds are this one is just practicing to try make a sound it heard.
