I got the 2204 back in November and loved it so much that I decided to get the 1987. It will be here Wednesday. Your videos also got me into using IRs and I haven’t looked back. I know the other videos go into some more low gain settings but running a Tube Screamer in to the low input on the 2204 sounds magical.
@@SonicDriveStudio Quick question. I got the 1987hw today and when I plug into the top input on the high treble channel, I can hear the sound passing through when the volume is turned all the way down. It gets very loud by barely turning it up, then a lot more gain the further I go. Is this how yours responds?
I haven't tried it at a low level but honestly, these classic amps sound good at loud levels. However, I would just send Wangs a message to be sure. I always use mine with a loadbox so I always turn it up.
Wangs vs Koch vs Fuchs is the review I'm looking forward to lol. Seriously though been eyeing one of the Wangs HD-15. Dig yer' channel, always great to see the amps compared side by side.
I’ve got one, killer Soldano clone, just swap 6v6 for 6L6, which makes it 15 watts vs 30 for the new Soldano 30. Talk about gain😳, 4 12ax7’s cascaded, harmonically rich, but 6v6 are a bit dull to my ear, but it’s got tons of wonderful lo end, and paired with my EL 84 powered little Boogie it’s a righteous sound indeed.😀
Thanks! With these settings they have similar characteristics, as you'd expect from a JCM and Plexi, but at the same time they also have their own thing going on.
They’re so similar but somehow the 1987HW sounds better for sure to me! There’s something so raw and clear about it that is just to die for. I gotta get a Helix patch that emulates that tone!!
nothing can beat a hot rodded plexi tone in my opinion, the plexi pedal distortions also sounds best to me compared to average distortion pedals. you can get 2 wangs for the cost of a new marshall jcm 800 reissue, ridiculous.
Both the SC20H and the Wangs is around 800€ so not sure what you're talking about? Are you comparing against the full JCM 800 version? Not a fair comparison IMO but sure :)
The 1987HW sounds awesome! i really want it! I was about to order one yesterday but i can't get past the sketchy website. and then the 20 days to get it from china. too much anxiety... who has one? was it worth the wait?
We have 8 years of high quality customer service. 20 days is actually pretty fast considering each amp is built to order and ships direct…although Covid will slow shipping sometimes we track the packages from USA. Website is run by distributor in USA but built by sales team in China. We are trying to get it better but can only make suggestions for yearly updates.
I have the wangs1987hw, really dig it.. Had it for about 6 months, then output stopped, took it to tech.. Power tube went, some caps blew out... said they should last 30 years.. All the parts were quality parts he would use.. Hoping just a one time fluke.. But its repaired $300 later and sounding magic again =) - im looking to get the JCM800 as a spare... .
As soon as you started palm muting that open low E note, I knew those are the plexi and JCM 800 tones. I love this sound, but I want to warn buyers out there, if you are looking for something that will deliver a very crunchy and fast "chugga chugga" to riff Bark at the Moon: this ain't it. That amp style though will give you great ACDC, no "chugga chugga" but a nice fat low end that moves the air and a crispy sparkling top-end. Just be aware what you are buying.
Because I can’t resist. Dude, those Wangs are huuuuge!!!! So Jon, judging by your comments, you would pick the 1987 based on its versatility? If you had to pick one?
The Plexi has more balz and heft than the 800. One is likely to add a pedal for any extra gain etc. for either but you can not add that extra mass the Plexi has. That said they are both excellent. It is all about lint picking. lol.
Hello Jon, I always like your tones. good job! Can I ask you a recommendation for a IR from own hammer (I have the true stereo pack) for a Mark V? Thank you
I was reading someone saying theirs didn’t have a bias pot, do yours have an ability to set bias? I also read something about ceramic tubes in the circuit that wouldn’t last long but honestly I don’t know much about it. I was looking into the Marshall sv20h, and saw these . Although the 87 wouldn’t be exactly like the sv20, right? I feel the Marshall would be tighter and less boomy . These do sound nice and have a pleasant sag to em . Does your discount code still apply?
Cool video, Jon! Like others have mentioned in previous comments, is there any chance that you will do a video detailing your recording process? You always get such great guitar tones!
I bought the 2204 and am super happy with it, but now I’m considering the 1987 as well.
I acquired these two amps a few months ago following your reviews, and I am a happy camper :-)
Awesome! Enjoy

Love the HD-15 although I hope to also review the HD-30 one day. The 15 sounds sooo good

I love mine. Sounds just like his demo. Great high gain and still very affordable even though they’ve gone up.
Do you have to re-bias if you’re going to swap to 6L6 vs 6V6’s?
I can tell I'm very used to Peavey amps, these sound super bright to me. Still sound great though! Cool to support a family operation like Wangs 🤘
They are super bright. I have a 2204HW and it’s crazy bright.
What’s with the face Jack on the LP? Piezo PU bridge? Pick ups wired to individual jacks? Fascinating, please explain, I’ve never seen this done!😳
Cool riffage! Both sound great. Love these comparisons, Jon!
Thanks! With these settings they have similar characteristics, as you'd expect from a JCM and Plexi, but at the same time they also have their own thing going on.
Lovin’ those riffs Jon. Also loving those handwired Wangs!! I have the high gain 15 and love it. Really love the price and the quality.

Do a Revv G20 vs Engl Ironball SE! Cheers and congrats for the videos
Definitely two great amp designs to own regardless of who builds them.
Amazing riff! Both sound really good. 2204 simply because it is more similar to the classic 800. A boss SD1 with it, and magic
both sound amazing. slightly more open and cut sounding for the 22104, though the plexi style one is sweet and warm.
So it comes to this.... comparing wangs ;) I vote 2204HW... unreal tone
Jon you “need” to do a solo ep! With all your awesome riffs you could make some sweet new songs!
They both sound great, I prefer the plexi, more bite, better attack and high end
The 1987HW sounds awesome! i really want it!
I was about to order one yesterday but i can't get past the sketchy website.

Did he have to replace the power tube sockets?
Love both. Really have to look into these.
Thanks. Do you plan to review the Wangs 20W D-STYLE ODS ?

Jon, does the 1987 need a captor X to reach tolerable levels because it doesn’t have a master volume?
The 2204 sounds a bit more modern to my ears, both sound very good!
2204 sounds tighter to me and I love it!
Because I can’t resist. Dude, those Wangs are huuuuge!!!!
So Jon, judging by your comments, you would pick the 1987 based on its versatility? If you had to pick one?
I don't know. It really depends if you're more into the Plexi or JCM thing. I like both :)
Came for the WANGS review but stayed for the riff. I’ve been stealing your goods lately ;-) just too good \m/ but I give you credit - ALWAYS
Where do you buy these...spartin uk..none in stock

What is an IR??

The Marshall sounds a bit thinner. The discount code should work
Has bias pot on Turret
Sockets are good quality, D-Lab video is one instance of this…But he only recommends the highest cost sockets..
I'm more of a Búbes guy myself
Just how loud is it?
Sounds to good to be a bedroom amp
Cool video, Jon! Like others have mentioned in previous comments, is there any chance that you will do a video detailing your recording process? You always get such great guitar tones!
Both sounds really good but where can I buy Wangs amps in Europe?
Directly from their USA webstore! They ship worldwide
The 2204 (JCM clone) has an effects loop and the 1987 (Plexi clone) doesn't, correct?
Both are ‘simple circuits’…no loop
2204 has master volume
1987 has parallel pre amps
No effects loop
Check out Brunetti Pleximan amp 😎
What speakers do you like the best with these? Greenbacks or maybe 75th anniversary? Combo of both?
Recommend V-30 in general
75th anniversary sounds better with the Fender voiced amps
Greenbacks for the lower output Marshall style
2204 is tighter brighter… I prefer it
Two Wangs are better than one
Why do people always have to show off their Wangs?
I didn't hear any difference whatsoever.
He says wongs. Its waanggs
It's pronounced Wongs, but I'm sure after a whole year you've found that out and why by now.
i like the Wangs better
