Actually, Mercedes shares a huge amount of blame for this dumbass law. They didn't want us Americans buying the European versions of their cars, so they started lobbying...
@@kanecain1981 I’ve heard that European cars built for the European market are somehow more reliable than the European cars in the American market. I remember going to Greece and being amazed that they used Mercedes vehicles as taxis. Where I live, our taxis are either Fords or Toyota’s.
@@kanecain1981 I read an article about that around 5 years ago. My understanding was Mercedes, BMW felt threatened by the performance of the JDM's and certain British sports cars such the TVR's and Noble. They were offering blistering performance at a fraction of the cost. So the lobbying began and these cars were deemed non-compliant to DOT standards. The biggest complaint was TVR refused to install driver's aids. Such as ABS and traction control. Also no airbags. Funny though, the Dodge Viper didn't have any of that either. 😎 It was actively trying to kill you just as much as the Cerbera and the much anticipated speed 12.
kanecain, that's "muricans" to it's best! LOL 😂 Trying to blame others for their ridiculous mishappenings and bad choices! Import a car after 25 years! Hmm! Import a van or a truck? Sorry, "chicken tax" anyone?! Welcome to the land of the free. BTW Yes, Mercedes do have a strong footprint as taxis, pretty much anywhere else. Due to good longevity and reliability! Yep!
It already had ruined it. Price inflation on JDM cars are ridiculously expensive and it's not even funny. Since the 25 year ban was lifted, the yanks have set a high demand in Japanese vehicles because they're now well sought after. Your only feasible option would be to see what's already available in your own country.
Loved the Glanza V turbo when they came out we used to race them ten years ago when they were still popular. Everyone drove them they were like toys every teen wanted.
As an owner of a 96 Legnum Vr4, I just can tell ya these things are the perfect car for rally families. You can fly through the woods with your wife, three children and a washing machine in the trunk😅
The engine isn’t exactly the same as the 3000gt and the ones shown were facelift models which were not made in 1996. I had an r33 for 11 years and wanted a Stagea then I had an evo 8 and that converted me to Mitsubishi’s. They really are nice cars when they have been looked after.
more correct is to say it's closer to an Mitsubishi Sigma\Diamante with stock engine where they throwed out the automatic crap and installed a manual and drivetrain from an Lancer Evo in it. still a nice car with good space in the back, and maybe one of the nicer looking wagons you can get for the next 10 years until the Alfa Romeo 159 Sportwagon comes in 2006
I've had a '98 Galant VR4 for years and it and the legnum are definitely best bang for buck on the list, though they'll probably skyrocket now ;P Expect maintenance to be expensive and parts to be hard to find, so quality is incredibly spotty as a result. Autos have the "learning" tiptronic that's actually pretty damn amazing. Also, AYC! Not enough love these cars because they're not stupid fast for the period and well because... boat.
i know im late to the party. but i was looking for comments about the legnum because he said they have the same engine as the 3000gt. but they dont. the galant vr4's all had the 6A13TT right? not the 6G72TT.
My old ass hears 25 year ban and thinks "Oh, cool. We can get some rad cars from like, 1985". Then he hits me with "1996". WTF! THAT WAS 25 YEARS AGO??
Shhhh I want people to keep forgetting those until I have a place to keep one. But also they started coming out in '94 so that's probably why they didn't show up on this '96 specific list.

Well, they still do. Its just that you shouldnt consider models like the chevy aveo, lacetti, spark and similar category vehicles GM. Other than these, real American models especially V8s outlast most European cars by far. But then again I cant know what your definition of quality is. To me its reliability and affordable price. I live in the EU btw.
@@DesertStateInEU sorry to inform you but GM is not what it use to be. @@legendaryracing904 "build them better in Europe" lol no. The European models are the exact ones Im thinking of here that are not even truly American, and really are bad quality. Fun fact: a Mitsubishi Legnum VR-4 came up for sale on Facebook marketplace last year for only $4,000 here in Australia. I didn’t know what the car was until now but damn. It was in the purple colour also. Such a shame.
Legnum VR-4 is probably the most underrated on this list
Also doesn't have an engine from a GTO/Stealth, Has a 6A13TT instead
Fast station wagons are always underrated
If anyone's keen on seeing some Galant content (the Legnum's sedan version) then subscribe to my channel... Reveal coming very soon!
Oh man, used to see those on the road here. Not anymore tho, all broken.
@@gutterrashautomotive3361 Other way around, legnum is a version of the gallant.
I love the r33 the most out of the 32 to 34, has some curves to it and the interior is still very much old Japanese car like
I believe people think the r32 is even better than the r33.
Blasphemy!!!
I used to be all about the r34, but I’ve come to really appreciate the r33 over time.
Happy New Year, teacher James -Toot Toot!

The spyder Renault looks like a concept car that actually didn’t change a bit from auto show to production!!
"What do you think was the most expensive japanese car made in 1996?"
I have no idea
"WRONG.."
How has there still not been an up to speed on the Toyota Crown? longest lasting model in Japan, would be a great video
Just do a up to speed james
Yea
Pls
Glanza are beautiful. I have one for 10 years now. If you can, get one, you're gonna love it. It really is fast. You hear about 400hp+ starlets but that's overkill. If you ever get one of these, set it to 250 hp with a stiff suspension and a rear strut bar. Its all you need for a race car. It is THAT amazing
Here's a list of all the cars who's prices will be needlessly inflated thanks to nostalgic Americans!
Shit sucks...
well if you want one you're part of the problem
Where i live prices for now legal skylines in the US are already skyrocketing in the last 5 days i can't find any under 100k anymore its ridiculous
Its good news only if you already own one and want to sell it at a much higher price than what you paid for it. Feeding the endless loop of price speculation in which we are all ultimately losers
"Nostalgic' Americans? Please show me a 50+ years old who wants a left hand drive Mitsubishi. A very few younger folks in the US and Canada will try a Japanese import after seeing one of the 9 Fast and furious movies. The average US new car price has just crossed the $40K mark..You can buy these old Japanese cars for $10-15K with much fewer extra high tech and pricey gizmos without 10 airbags inside. No worries Alon Musk has shown the youngsters how to make money in the near future by owning a Tesla. So we may NEVER see another rush to buy Japanese cars that were discarded by the Japanese, because of their insane laws concerning cars. I see a couple of diesel 4x4 Delivery Car..in my neighborhood..They were bought by young folks ,thinking of " heading South to Central America" SOMEDAY..I will fly instead.
Day one of asking d-media to add those time stamps so i can skip around and rewatch all my favorites.
You could do that too :P
US government: I set this shitty rule so that people would buy American cars more!
Car enthusiasts: *wait for 25 years to get a dream car
US government: *surprised Pikachu
Actually, Mercedes shares a huge amount of blame for this dumbass law. They didn't want us Americans buying the European versions of their cars, so they started lobbying...
@@kanecain1981 I’ve heard that European cars built for the European market are somehow more reliable than the European cars in the American market. I remember going to Greece and being amazed that they used Mercedes vehicles as taxis. Where I live, our taxis are either Fords or Toyota’s.
@@kanecain1981
I read an article about that around 5 years ago.
It was actively trying to kill you just as much as the Cerbera and the much anticipated speed 12.
kanecain, that's "muricans" to it's best!
Yep!
Also Americans: over buys every JDM car making the cars go from $10 grand to $60k for an average JDM
"The Fat middle child is the best child" Me being that thinking he is talking to me
well all the prices just skyrocketed
This is going to ruin the Australian import scene and I’m scared
That’s if the American economy doesn’t crash first 😌🤞🏽
@@stevesanchez1975 it won’t, sadly, but hey I should’ve waited to sell my s15 a little longer but hopefully now I’ll get a prettier penny got my 34
@@danielmarais6216 let’s hope so man bleed them dry for it 🤞🏽
start saving up broke boi
It already had ruined it. Price inflation on JDM cars are ridiculously expensive and it's not even funny. Since the 25 year ban was lifted, the yanks have set a high demand in Japanese vehicles because they're now well sought after. Your only feasible option would be to see what's already available in your own country.
“ Its got letters and numbers in its name, that means its sick!!”
It's a 3000GT wagon essentially. It's beautiful.
Stagea groceries go faster, just sayin......
The engine isn’t exactly the same as the 3000gt and the ones shown were facelift models which were not made in 1996.
I had an r33 for 11 years and wanted a Stagea then I had an evo 8 and that converted me to Mitsubishi’s. They really are nice cars when they have been looked after.
more correct is to say it's closer to an Mitsubishi Sigma\Diamante with stock engine where they throwed out the automatic crap and installed a manual and drivetrain from an Lancer Evo in it.
still a nice car with good space in the back, and maybe one of the nicer looking wagons you can get for the next 10 years until the Alfa Romeo 159 Sportwagon comes in 2006
Wie ich sehe gibt es anscheinend auch deutsche auto Fans hier
OH MY GODDDD ITS THE " Renauld Sport Spedeer" !!
The Mitsubishi Legnum was indeed sold on the European market, but under the Galant name. So we over here got the Galant VR4 model
My old ass hears 25 year ban and thinks "Oh, cool. We can get some rad cars from like, 1985". Then he hits me with "1996".
WTF! THAT WAS 25 YEARS AGO??
DUUDE!!! You forgot one of the greatest! 1996 Celica GT-Four!!!
Yoooooo another March baby!
Shhhh I want people to keep forgetting those until I have a place to keep one. But also they started coming out in '94 so that's probably why they didn't show up on this '96 specific list.
@@FUNKOfilms could be. But should’ve been mention every year since lol

Last time I was this early, GM made quality vehicles.
Maybe they build them better in EU, but most if not all of the vehicles GM builds for America aren't even made in America they are made in Mexico and they basically fall apart as you drive them off the lot and yes that does include those V8s you think so highly of.
@@legendaryracing904 "build them better in Europe" lol no. The European models are the exact ones Im thinking of here that are not even truly American, and really are bad quality.
Either way, even if those are made in Mexico theyre doing something right cause they sure are much more reliable than most European brands. In Canada, there is a 15 year wait. Where I live there is no emission rules, but right hand drive are banned. I'm not sure if it's possible, but converting to left hand drive would be a great series. Likely an insane amount of work.
Dang, I was secretly hoping they wouldn’t do this because now everything will be bought up and prices will rise.
I imported my 97’ Legnum this last September and I’m in Canada 😂
Toyota Glanza launched in India last year which is nothing but Badge engineered Baleno 😂😂
My fellow Americans who is with me on that Nissan Stagea? I've always wanted one of these. They look amazing and with that drive train I can only imagine how fast they are.
I remember while living in Japan. A military patrol unit pulling up in what I thought was a Hummer. The reason I say thought is I now think it was that Toyota Mega Cruiser. Great video James and I am glad we can finally import some of these cars. (:
