Dad,bought a 1970 Monte Carlo, off the lot from, browns Chevrolet, gold with a black vinyl top, black interior, 350 , 350-TH transmission, for 3200 cash. Powered disc brakes, bench seat, crank windows, nothing too fancy!
My step Mother, bless her loving heart, was going to teach me to drive it one day. However, up to that point, the only vehicle I had ever driven was a, 1945 or 46 Dodge power wagon pick up truck,my cousin Susan’s boyfriend, at the time owned ,I was just a little kid ,mind you, so stopping that old Behemoth of a truck took both feet pumping the brakes, and damn near standing on them to make it stop!
So, here we go, driving down the street in this 1970 power disc brake car, rolling up to a T in the road of our neighborhood street, and she says, ok start to slow down, well, my body went into, non powered, hydraulic drum brake stopping mode, which sent my poor stepmother slamming into the dashboard thank goodness she already had her right hand on the dash , seatbelts? Who used seatbelts back then? 😂The only thing she said was, oh no baby, not like that!❤
Then she ,calmly, and lovingly preceded to explain the concept, and safe operation of a powered disc braking system to me!
She didn’t curse at me or anything! I miss that kind soul!
The Monte Carlo was a nice car ! It seemed weird at the time, with the elongated hood, and short trunk!
Dad said it was Chevys answer to the recently redesigned Pontiac Grand Prix.
My Dad, My Stepmother, and the car are long gone now,
    I miss them all!🥹

I LOVE this story ! One of the 1st vehicles I learned to drive in the mid 80s was a family heir loom 49 Dodge pick-up that a Great Uncle bought new and passed down. I only got to drive it on the road legally ( with my license at age 16 ) a few times although I had driven it many times before. Just as I was about to inherit it, it was sold by my criminal father without my knowledge till after it was gone. Heartbreaking to say the least. One of my next cars was an 85 Monte Carlo that I bought with my own $ in 89 by working full time ( still in high school ) and making $3.35/hour. Obviously very different car than discussed in this video but I busted my butt to earn and it was mine that couldn't be ripped away. Thanks for giving me a reason to tell this story !!

It’s funny how some of our best, and worst memories are often linked to the vehicles in our lives!
Great story, thanks for sharing! I was 12 when I drove the Dodge, and believe me, it took a lot of pumping and testicular fortitude for my little 80 pound ass to get it to stop! LOL! Have a good one!

@@jeffreycarleton1535 I can't agree more that many of us who have a "car brain" can tell an entire life story by what was being driven at that time, how cars cam and went, as well as the parts of circumstances around where we were at the time. I can trace most family vehicles back at least 3 generations on both sides without even trying. Stuff I learned as a kid in the 70s that somehow stuck. Also, yes. The Dodge took some talent but after driving a 1929 Studebaker President, the Dodge seemed like futuristic technology of tomorrow !! I'm also very small in stature so stopping that Stude took some fancy footwork. Had to get it into neutral with the clutch then very literally stand up off the seat using both feet on the brake while giving it gas at the same time. I'm glad I learned and wouldn't change a thing about that memory.

Worked at a GMC olds dealership in the 90's when the parts computer system came out. Our Chevy computer in town threw away all their books when they got the computer. We kept one of each book. They found out the trucks larger than a 3500 were not in the computer and sent us all the big trucks they were ask to service. Every two months we got updated tape and disc for the system adding more parts books. I could have made a killing if I knew ebay was coming and saved all the books I threw away. Take care. Love these crawls.

My brother's first car was a '70 Monte. Black vinyl roof on red. Was a decent car, I guess - even though he was a little hard on it.
I moved out of town and lost touch, but one weekend when I came home, he didn't have the red Monte. I asked him what happened to it, and he just gave me a mean look and said "Don't worry about it". I never did find out the answer. But the next time I came home to visit, he had an '81 Oldsmobile Omega.

Absolutely correct about the disc brakes. I harvested the front braking system outof a 71 monte and installed on my 66 Malibu. The 12 bolt from the monte also worked on the Malibu. It was an inch wider on each side though. Had the rear wheels widened I inch to the inboard side. Fit real nice.

Here's a fun fact... GM NVH Noise Vibration Harshness Techs found the 114" wheelbase had a nasty harmonic, thus the 112 or 116" wb. I had a friend buy an "SS454" in 1970, too bad it was a 402 with SS badges... I stumbled across a 1 owner 402 4 speed in Montreal in winter 1978-79. Too bad it was a (typical) rust bucket after 8 winters...

ACTUALLY STEVE.....the front disc brakes on a 1970 to 1972 Monte Carlo, is a direct, bolt on to all 1970 to 1972 Olds Cutlass, Buick Skylark, Chevy Chevelle, AND Pontiac LeMans/ Tempest/ GTO.......BUT it doesn't end there!! The complete front spindles directly bolt on 1973 and 1974 Chevy Nova, Oldsmobile Omega, Buick Apollo/ Skylark, Pontiac Ventura and GTO (with the Nova body style) as well!! I ONLY KNOW THIS, because a few years back I owned a 1974 Oldsmobile Omega, and I still have the interchange information to what cars interchange with the Omega front end to convert drum front brakes to a disc set up!! BUT you have to keep in mind, in order to do the swap to disc brakes YOU NEED THE COMPLETE SPINDLES, brake caliper mounts and the calipers (unless you are replacing the calipers)!! Basically everything between the two ball joints is a direct replacement though!! Also the drum spindles ARE a larger diameter.....so that is why you need the spindles!!

It's getting very concerning that we're not hearing word of how Mr. Magnante is doing. As was said last time:
I dated a girl in college whose parents had a 1971 Monte Carlo with low original mileage, well under 30,000 miles. It was silver outside with a black interior and vinyl top. I believe that they bought it new. It was a regular 350 V8. They junked it after an accident, which was a shame as it was repairable.
No VIN, can't win, but easy to figure out: 1 for Chevrolet, 38 for Monte Carlo, 57 for two door coupe, 1 for 1971 model year, maybe B for Baltimore, MD assembly (among other choices) and the rest is the production sequence. Other choices might have been Flint, MI (Code "F", still operating today), Oshawa, Ontario Canada (Code "1", still operating today), Kansas City, MO (Leeds, code "K", closed in 1988), or Atlanta, GA (Lakewood Heights, code "A", closed in 1990) or Van Nuys, CA (Code "L", closed in 1992). The Baltimore, MD plant operated from 1935 to 2005 and the Astro and Safari vans were the last products to be made there.
No tag, can't brag, but easy to figure out, no doubt: ST71 for 1971 model year, 13857 for Monte Carlo, B for Baltimore, MD assembly (or the other choices noted), 729 or 733 for Jade interior trim with bucket seats, 11 11 for Antique White lower and upper exterior paint, and AA if it did have a White vinyl top (which as stated it does not appear that it did) among other codes.
