An octaver can put the bass line down an octave, which gives you more space on top.

The idea of creating a simple bass line first to create the template and groove seems obvious now you suggested it... But it hadn't occurred to me. Thanks and please keep 'em coming. 👍

You are a genius Phil. I always played the last note/chord into the looper. If I was off even a smidge, you could hear it. Also, being able to use a looper is a huge reason to go acoustic/electric instead of acoustic. Thanks for the informative and useful video.

Oh nice, a looper demo. Love it. I like the effect of the echoplex. Very subtle, but very useful. The Boss CS-3 compressor sustainer is perhaps one of my favourite 'subtle' pedals. Very keen to check out the echoplex, now.

I have a Boss RC-30 that I got used for a great price. It’s fantastic - an essential element in my rig and my practice regimen. It has two separate tracks - I’ll often use one for bass and rhythm and the other for leads and harmonizing. It’s tons of fun.

I would go for a compressor instead of the echoplex, way more usefull as it can give you a that full sound plus level the difference between pick and finger.

    • @nekot9274
      @nekot9274 7 років тому +2

Clem Shady yep! And I would use a real dedicaded amp even for practice purpose because as a electric guitar amp will not have the hability to reproduce all the treebles an acoustic amp have, you will have way less of the string noises when you play and they are very important to hear...so you will learn to control them!!!

Yes, I totally agree about a looper; the number one self improvement tool. The preamp is an interesting idea. I used to run my acoustic with a Spark mini with similar outcome. But, the only time I run an electric acoustic with an electric guitar amp, is when I'm traveling very light and playing in a friend's living room or backyard or the park, I'll use a Taylor GS Mini into a Blackstar Fly 3. A dedicated acoustic amp is highly recommended. I much prefer my acoustics into a pair of Fishman SA220's.

Hey Phil, I'm considering hooking my looper up to the effects loop in my amp, as the second-to-last pedal in the loop's chain (before the noise gate) so I can play a clean oop and then playing an overdriven lead on top without changing the loop's sound. Have you tried this before? If so, do you think it's a good idea?

Phillip!! I'm very glad I found this video bro!. I actually have one of those loopers like the one you showed. I haven't had it very long.
I played with it and amuzed myself and made a lot a people laugh and made a lot of space ships landing and such and I guess I
pretty much thought that was the extent of it. So, you got it to record the guitar over the base line, so you could practice the lead??
I didn't know it would do that. Now, I'm going to definitely have to hook it back up and take another really long in-depth look at it again.
I didn't get a book and there are numerous positions, not to mention several knobs on the thing. But I have to figure out how you recorded over the baseline part and still had both parts to play... Hummm cool thanks bro!!

I actually use my seven string as a bass with single string lines to make a rythym , think about how chords would work within this context, then take out my six string for leads. Fun process, gives a beefy rythym and a nice lead above it all. Use what you have to make what you need happen.

Hey, Phillip (or anyone else who would like to chime in)... I play a PRS Sc245 dry into a Fender Blues Jr. I am looking to add a pedal to assist in adding sustain for soloing. I primarily would use this for playing the National Anthem at sporting events, and am looking for help on sustain with the high notes (I bend a Gb up to an Ab after "Land of the Free" for the climax). I have the "volume" (which is really the gain) already pinned with the "fat switch" also activated. I was thinking of adding a compressor to accomplish the sustain I'm looking for. Please let me know if you think that is what I'm looking for and which compressor I should try. Thanks!

  • @MrJoeyBoombotz
    @MrJoeyBoombotz 7 років тому

True dat. A NUX Loop Core costs $100, has 3 hours of stereo recording time or 6 hours of mono recording time, 99 loops stored max, you can speed up or down your loops without them changing key, they can loop indefinitely and either stop or fade out when you decide to end them, and they have built in drums. I have dozens of jam tracks on mine, and I am always adding new licks to my major, minor and dominant 12 bar blues, Quist Jams, etc. If I would have had this when I was 15 years old my entire life would have been different. The newer machines that record your loops and have built in drums and bass are awesome as well but I don't have one of those. Having loops you can que up in a second makes all the difference in practicing your licks and adding new licks and solos to your bag of tricks. Being able to slow down the loops helps with speed and accuracy. This is the best $99 any guitarist can spend. It is a pedal you can and should use for life whether you play electric, acoustic or classical (don't know how it reacts to non magnetic pick ups)

I love the couple at :05. In terms of pedals, I already own a clean boost and a compressor. I wonder what a pre-amp pedal will do for me beyond my current capabilities. I think you said it raises the volume and fattens the note but doesn't push the amp. That's beyond my current capability? Thanks!

I own a TimPierce OD pedal, which has an OD on one side and an AMP section on the other. The AMP section, is a preamp [as Philip describes]. For me, it adds fullness to each note [not much volume] as well as imitating the "sag" and "squish" you get from a pushed tube amp. Unlike a boost, which drives the amp louder to produce an OD sound, the preamp simply imitates the other aspects of pushed tubes. It has become an "always on" part of my single coil Strat playing and an "always on" while playing at low volume for all guitars. For what it is worth.

A few things I do, is
play the guitar dry, and make sure it sounds good accoustically b4 plugging it in.
Play a lick you know is difficult to play on a cheap instrument. Make sure it's easy to play on this one you're considering.
I look at the frets. I notice that, most bargain guitars have the rounded frets, but some actually have the crowned frets. Just my preference, but I think crowned frets are easier to play on.
Then start evaluating it plugged in.
    Only then evaluate it aesthetically.

what is on year head stock between the D and G string, is it just a pick holder or something to help prevent string rattle ? i have a breed love as well and am just about to pick it up from being professionally setup as i was having troubles with the G string rattling occasionally.

1:49 Pardon my ignorance, but how does the Echoplex raise the signal level without "pushing the signal like a booster pedal"? Or rather, how do other boosters push the amp to change the tone without raising the signal level higher than the Echoplex?
Does the tone change/overdrive in boosters not happen within the pedal itself?

Basicly you can do everything to an acoustic signal as you would with a clean electric by the way.

Question: I just got the echoplex and found the volume doesn't really go up very much at all. In fact, my ears tell me things got quieter. I had to turn it all the way up to MAX to hear any boost at all. Am I setting it up incorrectly? Any ideas would be appreciated. (FYI: I got it to replace my EP Booster)

I haven't bought a looper pedal yet because I've been using Logic Pro X as my looper per se. That way if it's something I like and want to save, I can record into that and save it out to remember later.
However... I think the looper pedal idea is a lot simpler and you spend more time playing and less time fooling with the computer. :)
Oh and one more thing.. because of your videos, I just got a shiny new Gretsch 5622T.

Which three of these loopers do you think is the best for the money. And can I use a looper to incorporate some percussion into my mix?

Hello.. i need help.. i want the old sound and tone of the end 50s and beginning 60s with this echo like Fender sound for country songs. i love Jim Reeves and Patsy Cline.. and country music like Tammy Wynette. but there were so many.. So i wonder if i need the Fender amp and a real Fender that they had back then.. All good and genuine material. but I can not nearly afford this. So i want to try the way with what i can afford. Squire and cheap Fender amp.. or any amp that helps for getting this 50s sound.. Do you know what i can do? what i need ? can i get the sound with a pedal? its a soft echo like sound..
what can you tell me? i hope you understand what sound i mean. that's the music i would love to play for myself. home and alone or in company with friends or a girlfriend.. Patsy Cline and Jim Reeves..and songs like Śomewhere Between " and "Till i make it on my own " Tammy Wynette.
    and Apartment number 9..
i think you get what style... i hope you ....or anyone can help me out. but probably this is not in the style people of today would want to play or know but i love it and so its what i want to try to play.. Thank you for your time..
