Rescuing a baby flying-fox on his electrocuted mumbat; this is Saltash
Вставка

- Saltash is an 11 day old Grey-Headed Flying-Fox pup who was noticed by a lovely MOP, when he was moving around on his mum in the gutter under powerlines.
She came back and waited nearby until I arrived to protect him from any dangers.
I won't say that Saltash (Salt Ash from the street) is doing well, because he was quite squidgy at rescue, with slitted and squinty little miserable eyes; he's cold but not freezingly cold, and just not at all well. If you look at him you can see how unwell he looks.
I suspect he has internal burns; if he was on his mumbat's left side, when the shock went through, it would have gone through him as well.
I don't know whether I should be encouraging him to hang on and fight, or to just let him go if he needs to; I can't euthanase him just on how I feel, so I'll give him 24 hours and make a decision.
Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for our batties. Tolga is an awesome place in Far North Queensland, which has charity status. By sending donations to them, they get a percentage (and deserve every cent) and they can allocate money to me for batty expenses without it becoming part of my income stream (which makes tax time difficult).

Mention Megabattie or Meg in the PayPal message box and the money will find its way to me.
If no message box appears, please email Jenny to tell her that the money is for me.
IMPORTANT: If you pay through the PayPal Giving Fund, can you please email Jenny with the AMOUNT DONATED and the name under which you have donated, OR just forward along the PP receipt.
The Giving Fund doesn’t charge any fees (so the bats get more money) but PP doesn’t itemise out the amount, they just send a total every month, and we don’t know if the money is for Tolga or for Megabattie.
Here’s Jenny’s email.

Poor mum. I'm genuinely sad about her demise. Thank you to the person who noticed and called, and thank you for rescuing this little one.
Oh gosh. When he reached to cling to the stuffy.. choked me up. No matter what happens little one, Meg is with you.
And many thanks to the MOP.
What a precious baby ❤
Good luck, little boy. Hold on if you can, because the world needs you. ❤
Poor baby 🥺
Hi Weird Artist; I see you're new to my channel.
Welcome to Megabattie, I'm Meg
I put lots of information in the descriptions under the videos - so if you have questions, look for the answers there first. I also put the fate of the animal if I know it, at the time I put the video up. I may put updates there later if I find out what happened to the animal after it has left my care.
There is also a Happy Outcomes playlist if you want to only watch videos where the bat survives; this is a real life channel and you get the good, the bad, the ugly and distressing, and even my oopsies.
You can find further videos on an individual bat by searching in the YT search bar for Megabattie/and the name of the bat you want to follow.
There is a community tab (like a mini Facebook page) on my channel - if you go to Megabattie home page, there is a menu bar across the top under the cover pic. Home, Videos, Playlists, Community, About. If you click on the community tab there are posts there where I can share pix and talk about some of the videos I put up and answer questions.
I put up videos from Mandi and my rescue and care videos, so look to the title or description to figure out the context of the vids. Mandi doesn't rescue but she does a huge amount of rehabbing and has a lot of permanent care bats unable to be released for various reasons. She sends me the most amazing videos of her old retired bats in care; they've all got individual personalities and adorable quirks. Mandi lives 1200 kms away from me so I don't get to visit there often. I raise money for her on the videos.
The rescue vids from my point of view are all mine, and if you hear me talking and see my hands in the videos doing bat care, then that's me too.
Poor Mum. Please be ok little one. Xxxx
Oh, poor mite. Thank goodness the MOP noticed the baby.
So beautiful. Poor baby. Not long in the world, and he's lost his dear Mum. Bless him and all the others - and bless the rescuers, too xx
Poor mama 😢😢😢😢
Thank goodness you were called to recue the baby! ❤❤❤
Baby really doesn't look well. At least he is safe snd comfortable. Lovely MOP. Hoping for the best.
Precious little boy, I'm so sorry you lost your mum, he looked so so sad, I'm glad the lady noticed him on mum. I hope gauns strength and becomes a healthy big boy batty ❤❤❤
Poor lil guy. I know you will do the right thing, Meg, for him, and will know if it's time to let him go. RIP Mombat, fly free now. 🌈🦇
Hoping Saltash was on mom's right side and makes improvements. Fingers crossed! 🤞
Rescuing critters is a lot of hard work.
Along with the joy when the rescued one survives and thrives, there comes the sorrow when the rescue fails.
May your heart be at peace, Ms.Meg. And may the baby be gifted with the best and kindest possible outcome.
Lovely little man, hoping he's a survivor 💙 🍁🦇🇨🇦
Poor little Saltash. I hope with a good, warm nap, rehydration and maybe some milk he'll be able to pull through.
I doubt it; he may have internal burns.
@@Megabattie😢 can a vet help?
@alliecat8348
For severe internal burns from electrical shock on a tiny infant animal, not much you can do. Give fluids to keep them hydrated, pain meds, keep them warm and comfortable. Even if the major internal organs managed to not be damaged, with electrical shock you are still going to deal with rhabdomyolysis. And since theres no way to perform dialysis on an infant bat, theres a high risk of kidneys shutdown. If it was a pup brought to me after suffering an electric shock and initial scans of organs came back clear id be running an iv drip, diuretics, and electrolyte balance trying to dilute the toxins enough the kidneys can handle it, maybe some vasopressors or vasodilators depending on blood pressure.
But still, with an infant animal like this, not much you can do for electric shock, even a vet. I can provide supportive care in the hopes the body can heal, but its up to them to pull through. And thats for a domestic animal where we have a lot of medical knowledge about their bodies and you can get them to lay down and calmly accept an iv drip, not a wild animal who views you as a predator trying to eat them.
@@alliecat8348 No; they just say, give him fluids and something for pain and see how he goes. The bats are small/tiny; it's hard to image their brains and their innards because they're so small; it's expensive (MRI or CT scans), and hardly any vets will actually see a bat let alone do tests for injuries which are unfixable if found.
If he has internal burns he will die or be euthanased; I won't watch him suffer when he's past the point of no return.
If humans have internal burns they will be in ICU and have surgery and all sorts of support, but this isn't a thing for the batties.
At least we know that he will have the best care, no matter the outcome.
Долгих лет вам, хорошего здоровья , пусть придёт много денег в вашу жизнь. Спасибо, что спасаете животных
Thanks
I saw a bat when I was a child and was frightened by the way it looked. I now think they are beautiful and it’s because of watching your channel!
My vet says bats are all just wrong; they don't conform to the same kind of hearing as she expects, and they fold up the wrong way, however she is awesome with the batties and has been for about 15 or 16 years now.
Rest little one, focus on getting better and go be a beautiful bat.
You are amazing, the world needs more people like you 🙏🏼🇺🇲👏🏼
God bless mumbat 🌈🦇❤️ Sending prayers for Saltash.
I wouldn't get your hopes up too high; I think he has internal burns
@@Megabattie Oh Meg, I’m sorry. That will be difficult for you to watch little Saltash suffer from internal injuries. I hope he passes with minimum pain. I know you’ll care for him as best you can. Sending a hug to you. ❤️
It's really cool to see that book you use to document the bats.
I have a few ledgers; one for the rescues and rescue info on intake, and their call numbers and outcomes.
One for weights, and I just started a baby book with specifically baby info for their time in care.
It's so much easier to keep it on paper (I accidentally deleted 4 years of records on my computer when it got itself in between things I actually wanted to delete) and put it onto a database while I'm watching TV in the evenings. I don't actually watch it though, I kind of have it on and listen and replay anything interesting while I'm doing other work.
Omg the little hands over the eyes? He’s not ready for the world alone😢 But he has you and other babes, and your amazing soul-sister🙏🦇❤️💕❤️
His hands are his wings, however he puts his wrists up around his face and eyes.
I have no other babies in care.
Is measuring the head a new thing? RIP poor mum, your pup's in good hands now, you did well!
Thanks also to the person who called. I like people who take care of our little friends!
So so sad & heartbreaking, I pray this little mite recovers .❤❤🇬🇧
Fingers crossed, hoping Saltash recovers. 💙
Poor Mom, but Saltash may you feel all the love you need to grow and thrive.
Admiration for the MOP (as you call them) to do the best to save Saltash. I believe that your work is known and inspires people to reach out and help the bats.
Hah, I'm better known overseas than I am in my hometown.
Meg has you sweetheart you are safe now wee one. Awww, keep him safe as alwways Meg. ❤❤❤❤
Thank you Meg for rescuing precious Saltash🩶🦇💕 who is now in your wonderful care.🥺💕 A HUGE THANK YOU to the MOP who absolutely cares.👍💕 RIP Mumbat of Saltash.😓🩶🦇💔
Praying for the dear little boy.
So precious ❤❤❤❤❤❤🦇🦇
Sweet little boy!
Oh poor baby, he' s so unlucky. I hope he can recover
RIP mumma...😢😮❤🦇 everything crossed for sweet bubba sky pup!!!💙🦇💙🦇💙
He is warm and safe. Hopefully with help he will survive.
you are a good spirit. thank you for the work you do with the little ones.
Hoping.... Thanks for all you do.
Don't hope too hard; he's very squidgy and I doubt he'll survive.
Such a sweet little boy. Best of luck. Hang in there little man. He really doesn’t look well, though. Maybe he’ll be a lucky one and pull through. 🤞🏼
I doubt he'll survive.
❤
this poor little baby and his mum 😢❤
😇❤️🖤🦇🖤❤️
Pobrecito, perder a mamá tan pequeño.
Poor little guy... the experience of the electrocution and crash-landing on Mumbat must've been scary. I hope he's doing better.
I don't hold out a lot of hope for him; he's squidgy as, and not improving.
@@Megabattie Poor guy... you might be right, he might have internal burns... at least he's not cold on the ground all alone now.
A bat ‘paramedic’, (as we say in US). Always on the go, saving lives and soothing injuries ❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️🥰🇺🇸
We have paramedics here too; I like this part of batty care; I like rescue and I like immediate care.
Fight the Squidge Saltash
I think he may have internal burns; he's very squidgy
@@MegabattieI'm sorry, but what does squidgy mean??
@@alliecat8348 Squidgy is my term for a bat with squinty eyes, looks miserable and is just not very well at all. There are degrees of squidgy but basically it means not doing well at all.
It transfers well to humans, particularly wussy males who insist they are dying from man flu.
Poor, sweet little Saltash.❤ Maggie will come and feed you tomorrow - or soon.
Too bad the power company doesn't erect the power lines farther apart so that bats don't get electrocuted. 😢
They're slowly burying the lines, Kim. It will take at least another 20 years.
All you do is beautiful. Heartwarming, sad, emotional rollercoster~ Bless you and your batty heart Meg❤! Future name suggestion? Gotham- because no one will refuse assisting you when you say “Gotham needs you!” Because, we all need Bat-man!
Hi Nicole
I don't take name suggestions ever; that way lies total madness with the viewers monopolising the comments with suggestions, then demanding daily updates and pix of "their" bats. I also don't do adoptions for the same reason. I opened the floodgates once and it was a nightmare.
@Megabattie
LOL. I am not surprised. UA-cam comments are a madhouse at the best of times. Nevermind how toxic and nuts they can actually get and the parasocial relationship stuff that can happen when viewers get attached to an uploader (or a bat!).
Humans gonna human, I guess.
@@childofcascadia I seem to have developed a nice group of regular viewers but there's always the lunatic element. At least I don't have stalkers (yet)...
I don't envy you the decisions you have to make sometimes. But I know that whatever you do will be for the best. ❤🙏
I'm not infallible, and though I make a decision it might be as I see it or interpret it at the time, and it may actually be the wrong decision for the bat; I just do my best an dit has to be good enough, and I hope I learn from any oopsies and don't do the same thing again.
OK little guy, you have landed in a good place, so sorry about your mom. Do not understand about the electrical wiring. No grounding or insulation?
The bats are big enough that when they hang from an upper power line, their bodies complete a circuit with a lower power line. The same thing can happen with large birds. Small birds are able to perch safely on power lines because they're too small to complete a circuit.
It looks like mum bat flew into those power lines. Her wing hit one, and her face hit the other. 😢Greys have one meter wingspans.
@@SuziQ.Since Australia has so many fruit bats I wondered myself why the powers that be don't do something like maybe put insulation over the power lines so that the animals don't get electrocuted. This wholesale lack of caring for them really pisses me off.
🙏❤
oh man, I was hoping for a happy story today!! (i gots a year older, mini woo at this point lol). He defo doesn't look like a happy lil chap. Time will tell which way he chooses. At the very least he's warm, safe, pain-free, and will be well fed during his stay however long. Thanks Meg as always. Random sidenote: how many notebooks dya reckon you go through each year? It's kinda overwhelming looking at all those lines of entries knowing each one is a life. Are they ALL yours? or do u keep records for all the rescues? (yes i'm nosy, soz!)
I got a year older a few days ago too. Happy Birthday but don't count on this little one being a survivor.
The weight book has been going for 2 years now. I just started a new ledger for all the rescue details. And I have just started a little baby book so I can track what happens with the babies and to whom they go because it doesn't matter how many times I send them the details, when they go to creche the creche manager wants all the details again and I can never find it easily because the database sheets are all finalised and I lose access then
@@Megabattie belated birthday wishes to you as well then. Thanks for the book info, i've often wondered about it (random weirdo brownie points for me i guess lol). The new ones sound like a great idea. If it's all in a hard copy you always have it available. Databases are fine, but if the laptop decides to be a pain in the ass, you're screwed. N damn, defo internal burns then? Poor lil guy
💗🙏🦇
Bat 🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇 batman
Im hoping the lil guy is just stunned from the fall and laying in the cold and didnt suffer a major shock. Does he have any surface or contact burns where the electricity may have entered? Im hoping that even if the electricity travelled through him it didnt ground out in him, maybe mom insulated him or because it was head and wing he avoided internal burns. I once took 90 volts to the face. It wasnt a dangerous level but it still felt like getting hit with a baseball bat. This stuff makes me sad. I mean, predation is one thing. Life eats life and some beings die and become food so others may live. But this kind of stuff is just senseless death. I wish theyd bury all power lines. Ive seen too many dead and shocked birds and climbing animals in my life.
Heres hoping the lil guy makes it.
I'd have told you if he had contact or surface burns. He doesn't have anything superficial but it usually takes time to form; when the sun goes down things start to blister if they're superficial or flash burns.
He has nothing visible.
The powerlines are gradually being buried over the next (they say 20 but I think more likely 50) years. All new developments have underground power.
Why do humans have to ruin everything ? There are a lot of fruit bats out there in Australia so why can't they do something to the power lines like maybe cover them with something so that the bats and other animals don't get electrocuted?? I feel like this is a tragedy that could be prevented.😡
Seeing the poor mum made me cry.
The powerlines are gradually being buried over the next (they say 20 but I think more likely 50) years. All new developments have underground power.
Poor little fella. Just donated $100 AUD but didn't see anywhere to mention your name, so not sure how else to direct it after payment made. Does PP show the email of the sender?
Heh, it's deffo gone from my bank though! 😏
Is there anything that could be put on power lines to deter bats. Just a thought.
No. There are hundreds of thousands of kilometres of above ground powerlines; it takes time to bury them all but it will happen, probably by the time I'm 99% dead.
