  • Ron Finley is an urban farmer who grew up in the food desert of South Los Angeles. In 2010, fed up with the lack of nutritious options available to his community, he started planting vegetables on one of many neglected curbside dirt strips in the area. Since then, his project has spread and received nationwide attention.

I have 5 kids. the day i went to the store and there was no canned goods i went straight to the seed section. everyone else was standing there complaining or shocked. i have kids so i dont have time to be in awe or complain. i had to make sure we dont rely on the store anymore for a way to feed mine. me and one older lady were the only two looking through seeds. i literally had to walk down the aisles and tell people plant your own there are seeds for everything up front and you can buy them with food stamps. a month later i have my plants in the ground. i hand dug my bed and tilled it from grass to what it is now. A shovel, a hoe and a rake. took two weeks. i added in amendments and made my clay soil good enough for my plants to grow. my house next month will be a drop off spot for 290 plants that will be given out free to people in my community through a local organization. more black folks from the city need to do this. you can even buy fruit bearing trees and bushes and already started plants w/ food stamps. Thank you for getting gardening info out to people. We need more people to do this for our communities. cant wait to have folks show up to get these plants from my front yard. all it takes is planting that first one to be hooked.

I dunno, I live in a big city and I doubt that I can eat something that was planted on the streets. We had a lot of fruit trees everywhere but fruits from this trees are poisonous. Smog accumulate on the leaves and rain wash this poison right into the soil. I ate an apple from the park and got an Angioedema just from the small bite even though I never had an allergy reactions from fruits and vegetables before.

@@bigsister9354 do you have some space in doors? You can do most veggies in buckets. Just put holes in the bottom. Put them in front of a window and they will grow. Thats how I started all of mine.

ALISHA KATTARA, I use window sills to grow some herbs and greens and my family has a small garden outside the city. I live in Russia and many citizens have such gardens called «dacha». This is the legacy of the USSR then many citizens were given small plots of land by the government so that they could grow their own food. My grandfather was given this plot from his work forty years ago and since then our family has grown vegetables and fruits there from may to November. Then winter comes for six months.
it's funny that exactly after I wrote you the previous comment, I heard my neighbor planting something under the window😄😄
I think urban gardening will develop rapidly because of the COVID-19 crisis.
I wish you good luck and great harvests!🍀🌾🥬🥕🥗

WOW! Ron were driven to me by God! I have cured myself of stage 4 cancer! One of the things I did for my cure was cleaning up my eating habits to organic vegetables, fruit, grass fed beef, my own free run chickens (make my own mash!😊) and eggs, spring water from the spring in the mountain behind my house, grounding, honey (have my own bees!😊), electro culture on my entire small farm including my garden, mushroom extracts, root extracts and more! My whole life changed! A dear friend told me about you and said I would resonate with you and he was spot on! I am a new lifetime follower! We can never LEARN too much can we? I look forward to watching all your videos and learning your knowledge. Thank you for sharing this vast valuable essential knowledge to the world! I pray people will listen so they can feel the difference clean food can make in their lives! Love ya and God bless you! 🙏❤️🥰

This makes me think of all the lawns for businesses, churches, etc that are just grass. It rains a good bit where I live, so watering is not a concern. They should be begging people to grow food there, and people should be asking them. Could you imagine a 2 acre garden that anyone can get food from. Now imagine a bunch of them all over. People should be encouraged to turn their entire lawns into edible places.

Remember to compost all organic materials to make the soil rich... to speed things up you can chop it all fine and mix it with whatever soil you already have.
Also please do nurture the weeds which all nourish and detox us and require very little pampering to grow well... look for or plant these... truly they heal us all: Dandelion (Löwensahn), Broad and Narrow Leaf Plantain (Breit und Spitzwegerich), Lambs Quarters, Stinging nettles (Brennnessel), and so many more.
      Viel Glück!

We share the same inspirations for gardening and I'll add being tired of going into a grocery store and buying vegetables that don't taste like anything to put it politely. I grew up with gardens and fruit trees so I know what these foods should taste like and sadly corporations and industries have tricked the shit out of folks in believing these foods are healthy for them. It is time for folks to shit or get off the pot and make a difference in their lives for their family and future. Thanks for sharing this is food for knowledge.

When I worked in Manhattan years ago I used to toss flower seeds of all kinds out my car window, sometimes in a cup of water to assure they made it to soil. After time the entire trek to the Lincoln tunnel in NJ had flowers everywhere. It was delightful to have beauty to look at while stuck in standing traffic at times. Call me crazy but but i felt grateful for the beauty my discarded seeds returned to me every day. I think I above all appreciated the new scenery more thsn anyone.
If you have none to spare, dollar store box of seeds will do the trick for you.
I get Lilly seeds now (see attachment) for my next local project which consist of three. Two are highway exits with only swamp grasses as well as a local so called Greenway sponsored by the county. They've done nothing as far as planting there so I scatter seeds from rose of Sharon as well as wildflowers there. It's looking nicer each year and the dummies from county parks haven't a clue LOL.
I discard veggie seeds there before spring making sure snow sets them in.

1:53 Mother Nature does not waste ANYTHING!
21:43 I tell people, you don’t need meds, you need a garden!
25:49 We are part of the Ecosystem... You heal your Mother, you heal yourself.
So we take all our food scraps and other organic materials, chop them finer if we want to speed up the process, add them to the soil, mix or layer them in, and thus really give the soil what it needs to grow healthy food and flowers.
Let’s also remember the edible weeds that grow abundantly and both nourish and detox us when we use them as part of our meals.... Dandelions, broad and narrow leaf Plantain, Lambs Quarters, Stinging Nettles, and so many more! Look up the top edible weeds in your area, what they look like, how they work to heal and nourish us, and then make pesto or scrambled eggs, or smoothies, and whatever else you make with greens.

Picture buying tomato sauce that came from within 5 miles of where it is grown. The impact is exponential. Lower greenhouse gases, lower potential cost, and many intertwined positive externalities.

If we don't start growing our own food and learn how to build and maintain necessary things with available resources and knowledge, then when crisis hit, we all will be in worst shape. It will not stop at Detroit, Puerto Rico, Greek, Spain, Venezuela, etc. unless there are some drastic and sustainable changes with current destructive/unless greedy capitalist and political systems globally (yes I mean politicians and bad businessmen/banks/investors working together to keep us down).
Just because communities have problems and look run-down, doesn't mean residents getting together (since cities will not help and resources are not provided) can not take positive steps to improve with simple things like community gardens, neighborhood cleaning, trash removal etc. to beautify and create pride in community.
Ron echoed a lot of issues that all of us know like bad education system, resource distribution, food, control by big money over our ways of life etc.
It is easy to see most food/junk ads on TVS are the worst which is pushed by giant food corporations. Well these junks with lots of sugar, GMO, chemical make billions to these giant corporations and keep us sick and overweight. They care more on money than people apparently. It is the excessive love of money and power that are in fact have been our great enemies more than ISIS. I hope more and more people are aware of how bad current food supply chain is especially young people. Learning to grow your own food is the first important step. We can do it!

.Here in we have OFRE (offer) Operation Food Rescue Edmonton. They realized old folks had planted food in thier yards and its going to waste as they dont pick it anymore. OFRE organized pickings so young folks can go pick/harvest it and make preserves, cider ect. Ect. From what was going in the garbage. Think: local heirloom organic stuff is going in the bin by the garbage truck ton and some sob is charging a fortune for plastic bags of far away food at a farmers market?! No.

I was introduced to you and your lifestyle today, I have been listening to several of your videos(very interested in what you are teaching). I love what you represent,I love growing plants myself ,however I am turned off by your use of profanity. Do you have to use profanity as you speak your truth. Thanks and may God continue to bless all that you put your hands on.
