Really loved your review of the book. Agree with everything you said! Thank you for that great review. :D I'm currently writing my master's thesis on this book, and it is absolutely mind-blowing how deep and complex that novel actually is. There is so much going on in this story. It displays a lot of intertextualities. Yanagihara raises so many questions about American history and culture and how it affects the lives of its citizens. On whom a utopia is meant for and who is excluded? How paradise is actually constituted? How time and space affect people. That although history doesn't repeat itself, its forms of discrimination and othering keep reproducing themselves.
The aspect of loneliness was sometimes depressing to read, but overall this novel is an absolute masterpiece. 😀

i completely agree! i was emotional realising that despite being a hundred years apart, humans are still the same. they write letters, they do everything they can to protect their loved ones (even though it is not always the correct way), they rebel against something they have known/fought for all their whole lives.... AHHH i could go on.

    Love the review--
Her so-real eploration of universal joy, escape, empathy with outcasts/outsiders, and parental rights mixed with all you said! I couldn't read it in 3 or 4 days straight tho-- needed to slowly read, stop, and then reflect to appreciate the subtleties for me. As you said: stunning! And so beautiful! :)

The only other book I’ve read that jumps between different years is The Night Ship. So I think this could be an interesting read one day.

Thank you for this review! I've been intrigued by this book's structure but wasn't sure I'd actually want to read it. Your comments about character not being flattened in service of message is what really sold me.
