    This educational video is about exposures for screen making when you’re printing tee shirts and other preassembled garments. In this video I use 2 screens of different exposures of a halftone to help explain what more exposure time means versus less exposure time in relation to detail. The camera is really bad at picking up the detail of the halftone on the screens but I think you’ll be able to see the difference in how much dot was rendered between the 2 exposures. On one screen you can barely see the dot and it certainly won’t print well at all. The second screen has much better dot detail and will print the halftone below the 20% gradient range well enough for our purposes. I may be able to fine tune the exposure some more to get the halftone perfect but I liked the look of how this one developed and I really do want a vintage screen printed poster look. That means I don’t necessarily want it to be a technically perfect screen. But you can use not only you’re mesh count to get details in emulsion, but the exposure time can also be critical. That’s what I hope to explain in the video and help you better determine your exposure times for making screens. I think the screen with the least exposure time of the 2 will print fine and look pretty cool in black ink on white poster board. Since I forgot to mention this in the video; 45 LPI on a 230 yellow mesh screen.
    I used Saati Textile PC Blue emulsion in this video:

    Thank you for this video it was really helpful. Last week I had to make one screen 3 times in order to get the detail. My exposure unit is really primitive but i guess everyone learns from the mistakes. Now i actually calculate my exposure time depending on the detail i need to get.

    Just a tip.... a step wedge test can help fine tune your exposure time to get the detail you want. I’ve noticed no one ever talks about this tool anymore.

    • @CatspitProductions
      @CatspitProductions  5 років тому +1

      Actually that would have set me back to zero point. I'm already familiar enough with my emulsion and exposure unit that I do not need an exposure calculator. It's actually pretty easy to guesstimate your exposures once you have been working with the emulsion for a while. I don't think people use them much because it's really best for when you have no clue. Then it can dial you in but experience will far outweigh an exposure calculator in my humble opinion. And it's likely that I would have to tweak the exposure still myself from the exposure calculator to render all the dots as I wanted here. Some exposure increments are impossible to see on the exposure calculator. Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/

      Oh no, I was not referring to your personal use, I was referring to newbies, trying to figure out their sweet spot for burning. I've seen many videos of guys shooting 6 screens just looking for a more or less time. A person of your expertise can show these people starting out, how to use the step wedge.

    Great work, and very helpful/informative...although I think you need to explain how heavy or light your hand is in coating emulsion , one pass on each side? Thanks for the video, your timing is right on as I just did a halftone with great results, on a 1-1 pass and 1:15 exposure time...can't wait to try 8-12 seconds....!!

    • @CatspitProductions
      @CatspitProductions  8 років тому +1

      +HartScreenPrinting Thank you! Okay this was on an LED exposure unit so that is why the exposure time is so short. I put the details in the video description. But yes, I always "preach" a 1/1 coat using the thin side of the scoop coater. Lower mesh counts naturally hold more emulsion than higher mesh counts even with a 1/1. And a thinner stencil not only holds more detail easily but it is easier to expose. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/

    I've been watching you for years. Basically first time I decided to make my own t-shirt was 3 years ago and then I saw a video from you and understood the process. I think I will be ready soon for my first half tone. As I come to understand exposure is very important to be able to achieve the 10% gradient ranges.
    My question is: would you advise using a 100W UV LED lamp with a make-shift stand for exposing my screen or should I wait until I save enough money for an exposure unit similar to the one you have in this video?
    I am not doing this for money yet, I am still doing it at home as a hobby, my job is in a separate line of work (completely)

    Does the mesh count matter in the under/over exposure? I print a lot of detail with 305 screens and usually exposed it for 100 seconds... should I reduce the exposure time?

    • @CatspitProductions
      @CatspitProductions  7 років тому +1

      If you're getting the detail you need then you're fine. You should adjust the exposure as needed to render the film positive properly on screen. Sometimes you may have to adjust for yellow mesh and lower mesh counts naturally hold more emulsion so they could take more time. It can also depend on your exposure unit. Thanks for watching! Hello! I watch your videos all the time and THANK YOU!! I’ve tried a variety of different things when trying to burn halftones. My most recent was a 230 yellow mesh, screen coated once on each side, exposure time about 10 seconds less than what I normally use. My image seemed a tad stubborn to washout and some of the half tones “blew out” and left pinholes in the image. Any pointers? I read one of your replies stating that yellow mesh can take longer, but half tones can take less... do you think it was over exposed?

    • @CatspitProductions

      It's probably too much humidity in the emulsion or too much ambient humidity in the air making things sticky. Be sure to allow sufficient time for screens to dry during high humidity seasons. Thanks for watching my videos! I appreciate your support. That may be difficult for me to do since I do recommend having certain things like a scoop coater. Spreading emulsion with a squeegee is not the best solution. A 16" scoop coater is $23.95 plus shipping. That investment will improve you screen making life by leaps and bounds. I would also recommend a 500 watt work lamp at the very least to make things much easier. Those cost about $15 at Home Depot or Walmart. You should also allow ample time for a screen to thoroughly dry with emulsion. My goal is to teach the easiest way to screen print commercially. I'm not really an expert on home brews even though I may be able to muddle through due to my experience. I'll see if I can do a "home brew tips" video perhaps. Thanks for watching! have you ever thought changing your business name and music background? I came to a conclusion that Catspit sounds more like a veterinary parlor where people take their animals and dogs for nail clips and hair combing. If I was the owner I would changed to Premier Silk Screen Printing or Master Royal Screen Print Shop.. if u ever chance your music use Kurt Cobain's Smells Like Teen Spirit punk rock song.. grungy sound

      There some history and background story behind my name and logo as well as intro music. I'm more of an artist than a businessman and I cannot please everyone with any which way I go with that. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/

    Um... where's your exposure calculator? Screen mesh? A lot of instruction and stencil making details were missing. Emulsion? Proper rinse out technique. This video was a bare bones introduction for beginners.

    • @CatspitProductions
      @CatspitProductions  6 років тому +1

      I have been doing this since I was 11 years old. I do not need an exposure calculator. I know my emulsion and my exposure unit well. This is a general tips video and I would have mentioned mesh count if it were relevant to these quick tips. Besides the tech info is in the video description. But printing tee shirts is not as technical as other forms of screen printing. And there are more ways to do things than just one. So your "proper washout technique" maybe your personal preference. I am a dealer for Saati so I know all about how the technical guys would do things. Not necessary for tee shirts. But feel free to make videos sharing your methodology. Thanks for watching! +Ishi Soriano Glad I can help out through my videos. Once I get a water based ink line I will address those things. With plastisol we usually do not need to add anything unless it's a special application or effect. You can find Catspit Productions on Facebook. But if you want to ask screen printing questions, using my forum (www.catspitproductionsllc.com/forum/) or emailing me direct is best. Use the contact form on either of my websites. I do not hang out on Facebook. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
