I always give drivers a wave to say thankyou as I have manners. I don't expect a thankyou when I stop because I have a life.
100%
Manners don't cost anything and it's nice to show politeness both ways
@@Karlos-h8z Yeah, it's NICE but not necessary. That's the whole point. Just like it's nice to thank a bus driver after you get off the bus but not necessary and therefore not rude
It is not rude, but it is polite to thank someone who stop to let you cross the road.
There is a nuance people miss. Thanking drivers is neither polite nor rude. Assuming we mean places where drivers legally have to stop like zebra crossing. It's like holding the door open for someone who is quite far from you. It's polite, sure. But does that mean if you don't hold it, you're rude? No.
It doesn't take much effort to lift your hand a little to thank someone, the same with waiting to enter a building and thanking them as you exit, manners really take no effort whatsoever. You're not obliged to do it, it's just the difference between a decent, well brought up person or not.
Manner's don't cost anything, and I always say thank you or just show my hand to say thanks but I'm so used to rude and entitled people nowadays in general that I don't even look at other drivers anymore. Even if I flash my lights to let them go first or something. I'd rather not know whether they said thanks or not.
Exactly bad manners will catch up with you one day. You may miss an opportunity because you have no manners or good character
It used to annoy me in England but I've moved to Scotland now and almost everyone says thanks.
You are required by LAW to stop your vehicle for pedestrians at pedestrian crossings. They don’t owe you anything. Grow up.
They're only required to stop if you've step a foot onto the crossing itself not just waiting on the side
Some are so full of themselves they cross the road without even looking
I saw Keir Starmer walking across a pedestrian crossing without acknowledging the driver .This is an OUTRAGE and he should resign !!!!!!!!!!
No , why should pedestrians thank drivers? It's the law, I've had many instances where a car has drove dangerously
Wow, I've never seen a car 'drove' let alone one that's 'drove' dangerously. Where I come from cars are usually driven by a human being who's in control (or not).
Agreed. Drivers are required by LAW to stop as pedestrians have right of way at pedestrian crossings.
And there are many irresponsible and dangerous pedestrians let alone cyclists.
The Police don't do anything about it though...
@@chappy2121 cyclists are usually in there own world most of the time
There was a phrase called 'common courtesy' but it looks like its been cancelled now.
I think it is just good manners to raise a hand and nod to drivers who stop at crossings to let you safely cross. I have also noticed that there are many who do not stop, I had somone swerve around me recently, so you cannot take it for granted you are safe there anymore!
No it's the law. Do we thank visitors for not robbing us.
Mmmmm I wonder what sort of upbringing you had!
@@stevegray5709 I brilliant one, I just don't thank unnecessarily. I've not watched the video but I always thank if it's not a crossing.
It's not rude, it's cultural to thank.
No, it's not.

Why not thank them?
I say thank you if a driver has stopped to let me cross at a random part of the road. But if it’s a zebra crossing it’s my right of way and wouldn’t think of thanking them. I don’t expect drivers to thank me when I let them pass either.
Must we wave at all drivers obeying the rules of road?🙄

@@452samuel it's a distraction from the state of the country and it's daytime TV
Of course it’s rude not to thank.
It’s like if someone opened a door for you. Quick thanks. Done.
I know it’s law to stop but good manners is key.
So is it rude if a driver does not say thanks to pedestrians waiting for a green light?
@@jamesscottvideos there will always be people like you who will go against the grain
That American lady giving drivers the 2 fingers as a thank you must get some interesting reactions 🤣
It's not rude, rudeness would be a rude gesture. But it takes costs nothing to give a wave of thanks. And it encourages more good driving behaviour.
This guy also probably doesn’t say thank you when someone holds the door him. I always make that person feel uncomfortable by saying you’re welcome
I’m a driver, and can’t say I’ve ever expected anyone to acknowledge me for doing what the law requires me to do. I won’t be starting either, as based on my experience, I’d just be setting myself up for disappointment.
😂 The system has broken your soul.
That was a great point about the bus. Is it rude to not say thank you to the driver after getting off? 🤔
I was in a rush and had to drop my brother at school in the morning. He was misbehaving, and out of frustration, i didn't raise my hand to thank the driver (i usually do), but when we got to the other side of the zebra crossing, he rolled down his window and said "your kind of people dont say thank you"
I always say thank you and smile 😃
Drivers are trested like absolute dirt these days by central and local government, so anything I can do to make their life more pleasant I do without hesitation. Waving a thank-you to drivers who stop for you, whether they're legally obliged to or not, costs nothing yet make life really more pleasant. I'm a pedestrian more often than a driver. And I always thank the bus driver when I get off. No driver has it more difficult than a bus driver these days.
Cyclists are treated by dirt by everyone else. People who drive literally have it so easy as cars are affordable to the working class.
I always do it when crossing its just something I know to do out of courtesy and what not but I'd NEVER expect a pedestrian to wave back to me when I am driving.
If it's rude not to thank a driver, then it's also rude of a driver not to thank a pedestrian who is waiting at a busy junction for a green light. Works both ways.
Exactly!
I would say impolite, rather than rude
Funny how he started shouting at the start of the debate 🤣
It's only right to be polite
The other day I was sitting in my air conditioned BMW listening to the radio while it was hammering down outside and would you believe it this peasant did thank me, just kept his heard down and walked away? A little bit of rain robs people of manners now.
OFF COUSE IT RUBE NOT TO DO
If it’s on a designated crossing, then I don’t see it being necessary, especially as it’s the law.
If they’re voluntarily doing it on a normal road, giving a thanks is appropriate. It’s definitely not rude either way
It's not the law if you're waiting on the side though as most people do sooo
When I am driving I could not care less if people wave or whatever, I just think it’s my duty to stop. But when I am crossing I say “cheers”. 😂
Drivers never thank me for waiting unless I am driving
I DO DO YOU LIVE DOWN SOUTH I,VE NOTICE DOWN SOUTH THERE IGNORANT
@@michaelenglish2066 Down south writing in all caps is also considered rude.
Is this really a necessary discussion? 😂 the country is going down the drain and this is what we spend time discussing
Drivers should be thanking the rest of us for being allowed to use the road at all.
Its just a natural reaction from me to thank a driver for letting me cross a road and NOT a z crossing
Crossing the road on a zebra crossing and drivers expecting a thank you for following the law is mental
Technically they're not following the law as it's only a requirement to stop if they're on the road part of the zebra crossing not the side
@@dennisgoatimer1079 I worded that badly I meant drivers expecting a thank you for following the law
@@samlawless62 Well I agree I'm just stating that in most of the cases of people at a crossing there's no laws that they're breaking if they don't stop it's only if you're on the crossing not just waiting at the crossing that they need to stop. In the cases you're on the crossing and they stop they're just doing what they're law bound to do so I wouldn't thank in those cases.
Drivers have to stop at zebra crossings for pedestrians. It's the law. My father was knocked down on a zebra crossing by a careless driver who was in a hurry. He spent two years out of work because of the injuries. This driver is acting as though he owns the road and if he does stop it's an inconvenience to him and we should show how very grateful we are that he deigned to stop.
Sorry about your dad. Drivers think because they have a metal box with four wheel and engine they are better and more important than everyone else which is why that driver expected pedestrians to thank him when it is the LAW as if he saved hundreds of lives or something. The media and the motor industry tells drivers that they own the road and that pedestrians and cyclists are taking it away from them. It’s never an inconvenience for them. So many drivers are uneducated on how to get to places earlier which is to leave earlier. Other drivers inconvenience them by simply existing to go very short distances. Most of the time they get stuck in another queue so what is the actual sacrifice being made,
Do you thank drivers for stopping af a red light? Same rule applies at a crossing pedestrian has right of way and drivers should stop
I would say thanks
It is a nice thought ,but stopping at a place not designated as a crossing can be dangerous .
The world' on fire, GMB still covering the important stuff though 🤣
Slow news day? I guess there's not much else going on
I always put my hand up to say thank you
Same. Just with one finger sticking up though
No of course it's not rude. As a pedestrian if you make a step on the zebra crossing it's law that drivers stop to let you cross. At a pelican crossing do you thank the driver for stopping at a red light. Do you thank everyone for obeying the law. Does the government thank tax payers for coughing up the correct amount of income tax. No. But they can prosecute if you don't. Obeying the rules is an expectation.
That's if you make a step if you're waiting on the side they don't have to stop for you.
Yes, that's the code. I suppose it's nice to acknowledge the driver if they allow you to cross.
If my 8 year old granddaughter can give a wave of thanks I don't think it's hard for everyone else to
Good job covering the important news.
Ironic that the first comedian mentioned a parade for the courtesy when he's most likely first in the queue for tickets to a different type of parade...
Yes it is rude - no question about it
I’m a very calm person. But I do get road rage-contained to my car that makes my kids laugh- when I let people go in car or pedestrian and they just totally blank me, which seems to be about 90% of people in my area
This is one of the little British things that are disappearing in our world.
I also acknowledge those who stop, and enjoy, being thank when driving. What I would say is that pedestrians are not thinking if they fail to thank drivers, I am sure drivers are much more likely to stop, and give people sufficient time if they have been thanked previously. Dave is precisely what is wrong with this country lately.
The worst thing I hate! Worse between to drivers than pedestrians!
I agree with the guy on the right, but my god is he obnoxious
Yes it is. Next?
Good manners and nice to do, yes, I always try to do it. However drivers are obeying the law, not stopping due to kindness so it's personal choice.
Technically no if you're not in the road they don't have to stop seriously look it up
yes it is. it's also rude to not stop when someone is on the crossing already like i was this morning
Where I live the cars are always trying to run you over, even in crosswalks where pedestrians have the right of way, so I don't care to thank drivers for not running me over when I have the right of way. I don't ever expect a car to stop for me if I don't have the right of way, but if they do I will wave as a thank you.
I will wave if someones stops lets me cross where there are no traffic lights or zebra crossings. But not where they're supposed to stop. I've been nearly driven over on a zebra crossing many times. Always thank the bus driver, cashiers. Cyclists are menaces.
I always give a thank you wave and i pick up my pace when crossing
You either have that respect or you don't. If you have to force it, don't bother.
The world is on fire and GMB is discussing this lol
Even though i always give a wave... when im driving i dont expect one
I always say thank you to drivers letting me cross.
Yes it is it takes two seconds just to nod in appreciation
Sometimes a genuinely forget and I feel bad.. the people who they let on the tv now is crazy
I always thank them . Manners cost nothing . I was brought up this way
Im with the guy in white. Yes its polite to wave but its not rude not to. Two things can be true at the same time
Shouts to Kane, knew him some years back. Sound guy
People are misunderstanding the law, it's a requirement to stop if they're on the crossing but it isn't a requirement to stop if they're waiting at the crossing which I presume most people do the latter instead of the former however it's advised to slow down when approaching a crossing to make sure you don't break the law but that's just advice not the law as well.
So technically they can continue on their merry way without any legal ramifications but typically in most cases they stop in those cases they're going out of there way doing a good deed that isn't required of them by the law that's something that deserves thanks in my book.
Yeah, give 'em a wave.
Yes it's rude I even wave when they stop at a zebra crossing
Yes
I ride a mobility scooter snd i always thank motorist who stop and let me cross safely ❤❤
What a British complaint 😅
In other news.... the mid east is on fire.
Yh Kane's right, even if it's law cars have to delay their drive for a bit of time and respect costs nothing. Your upbringing's also important bc I learnt that part of it when I crossed the road with my parents
So should the traffic lights start thanking you when they delay you?
Oh ok, then I expect every single car to wave at me when I'm waiting at the crosswalks. It's the polite thing to do for delaying my walk.
@@freddywilson yeah and stationary cars should flash their lights at me as well, honestly comparing people to traffic lights…😭😭

It works both ways. Thanks for stopping ✋️, then the thanks for thanking 🙏 happens in cars, someone gives way ya give a wave or a flash of the lights. It's jus common respect for other people. Manners are dying
no it isn't rude, why would I thank someone for following the law. that's like thanking strangers for not assaulting me
Well, a pedestrian ONLY has rights of way on a pedestrian crossing ONCE THEY’VE CLAIMED IT!! They have no rights what so ever to walk out in front of a vehicle that is doing the speed limit and is within the zig zag lines. A pedestrian SHOULD wait for a safe time in which to cross and claim the right of way bye placing a foot or standing on the crossing. So, if you disobey these things and get hit, it’s gong to be your own fault. As for saying thanks, well the driver has given way and you are on a road so since it costs nothing, personally I feel acknowledgment is polite!! And for that David guy, well what can I say.
A pedestrian is given the hierarchy of road users in 2022 and should be given way if they are waiting and must be given way if they are already crossing.
Seeing how many drivers operate, and the fear has been culturally framed upon pedestrians, is no wonder why they don't 'claim' their right of way in many instances.
As per the highway code, drivers don't have to stop for pedestrians waiting on the crossing but they "should" meaning I as a pedestrian have every right to step out and cross. If you hit me, that's completely on you. And no, you won't be getting a thank you if you stop. You'll be lucky if I don't give you a screwface lol

@@keifer7813 No that's not what it's though if it's not required by law or a policy in terms of a private place then you don't have to do anything. Just because you think they should stop that doesn't mean it's the case that they have to. You can hold that opinion if you really want but that doesn't affect the reality of the matter. They do deserve thanks for stopping when they really didn't have to in my eyes.
