Rudy can be a complimentary piece playing at an all time level in his role, Donovan can lead a team to the playoffs but he cannot play his role to a high enough level to win it all.
True with Gobert. Defense is the part of the sport that makes it a team sport. You can have 1 or 2 people be offensive juggernauts and be fine there but if 1 or 2 lack on defense then you are going to fail. We've seen that every year. I do not agree with your Mitchell comments. He is still really early in his career and has room to grow. Some stars realize they can't do it alone and need a 1B or needs to be the 1B to a 1A, while others don't realize it. Melo is a good example of a player who spent most of his career as the #1 option and it got him nowhere. He's now on his last legs chasing championships. The faster Mitchell can adjust to not being in control every possession but still be a contributor on the court, the quicker his team will become a legit contender and not a playoff joke.
I think this is recency bias. Obviously the Jazz team chemistry was off, particularly when they traded Ingles away after he was injured - that was a dog move by Danny Ainge. Donovan Mitchell was elite in the 2021 playoffs and he was playing hurt during the Clippers series. Not to mention Donovan put up 39, 9 and 9 in game 6 so what the hell are you on about? Mitchell has also never missed the playoffs in his career. As a rookie he was already dominating in the playoffs.
The other major issue is that Rudy can't score. If he at least had a mid-range jumper or a few moves that changes everything but if teams go small in the playoffs he can't guard anyone and doesn't score on offense. Plain and simple

All they had to do was freaking bleed points slower.........god that was awful to watch. And now here they are needing Harrison Barnes or a clone of Royce O Neale.
Completely agree but the clippers exposed him last year it's up to them to make adjustments so that doesn't happen again and I don't know how they do that.
It’s like you guys watched the clippers series but don’t actually understand what you’re seeing. The perimeter defenders on the Jazz we’re giving up dribble penetration out of ISOs, no screens needed. Conley and Mitchell were both hurt (and Mitchell straight sucked offensively the 2nd half of that series). People blaming Gobert for not being able to chase shooters all over the court and defend the rim while the other 4 guys have wide open lanes to the rim is stupid. Also, Anthony edwards can say he ain’t scared of Rudy, but the fact is that Ant got blown out by 30 and only had 2 shots at the rim all game. Ain’t no shotblocker scared of a dude who doesn’t attack and settles for pull up Js. Just like ain’t no defender remotely scared of Westbrook as an offensive player. Every team just leaves him wide open and dares him to beat them offensively because he isn’t good enough a decision maker to reliably do that in the last 5 years.

Being from Utah it's an easy question to answer.... Mormons. Around the country Utah is thought of as the state with wacky Mormons and Polygamists, it's the underlying reason why they get more disrespect than any other small market team.
Defense in basketball is hard to see, much less understand. The average fan doesn't know what to look for beyond a block or a steal. So when the debate about top players in the league come up, people get mad that stat nerds like me put Rudy pretty high up. Also, the mic touching thing lmao
Rudy is an elite defender. That's the point. No point in arguing. We can see it in the game. There are so much things not on the stat sheet. You can see players changing their shots when they face him. The screen assists also. If any of these jazz players were on the more popular teams they will be the talk but nah they're just on the jazz. No hate. I'm a fan of the jazz but people will start taking them seriously if they win. That's the most difficult thing. But for us fans and also some of the players they knew what the jazz are capable of.
The scheme to exploit Rudy (get him out of the paint) isn't a testament how good he is. It's more of a detriment of how none scoring big men have a limited ceiling. This is evident on how they lose the same way every year in the playoffs.
The narrative that the Jazz have been underperforming in the playoffs is a false one. They have only actually been upset once and it was last year. Without one of the all-stars and Donovan playing really hurt. Every other season when they have lost its been to teams that were projected to beat the Jazz by good margins.
NBA media is just gonna do this same old song and dance of polishing Gobert’s jock and then acting dumbfounded when he gets played off the floor in the postseason.
@Thouzer47 it's his IQ, foot work, post moves, both hands, shot selection, playmaking, passing, efficiency, rebounding, soft touch I'm sure I can keep going lol
jokic is amazing, but as somebody who has watched every game they've played against each other, there have been a few games where rudy dominated jokic to the point that jokic gave up. The reason why Rudy Gobert doesn’t get the respect he deserves is the same reason that Rossianno wasn’t considered a part of the big three even though he might’ve arguably been top three most impactful players in their runs. Real basketball players and fans understand that somebody can impact and be elite in other categories than scoring and it means more than just being so good one on one that no one can guard you. A defensive player will always get less praise than a scoring one. Always. Most people do not see or understand what makes players like Gobert valuable. To understand defense, you actually need to pay attention what they are doing and what effect it has on the opposing team. I believe the majority of fans watch the games much more casually and get impressed mostly by flashy dribble, dunks or long 3s.
I'd estimate 99%+ of people are ball watchers. Watch basketball off the ball and you'll see what makes guys like Rudy so great. I started watching off ball like 10 years ago and it makes you understand so much more of the game. I think I learned more watching off ball for 1 month than on ball for ~15 years.
Gobert is so good on defense and effective on offense casuals don't like him cause he's not flashy. My stats have him as clearly #5 in the NBA so far this season (only behind: Giannis, Jokic, Curry, KD) and he was #12 last season. Also did some research on the least popular stars and Jokic and Gobert we're the ones with the least on the internet.
he should have been 2nd or 3rd in the mvp race last year with embiid. Jokic is the only person I'd put over him last year. Rudy was absolutely dominant, that was the greatest defensive season ever played.
@@ratcomedy Yes I actually agree with giannis, he's amazing. People are too biased towards offense to ever give somebody like Rudy a fair shake. He has a ridiculous effect on the game.
I believe we saw the same reaction to Yao Ming. It's just hate ... Everyone who follows basketball knows that if it doesn't score a lot of points like jokic, Embiid etc. This is because all the players around him keep the ball and shoot 3 points. His only way to put baskets, is to wait until the guys want to give the ball or on an offensive rebound. it's rare when Donovan, Mike Conley or Clarkson do games with 10 assists, they prefer to shoot

The only reason I can see people undervalue Gobert is because he does look uncoordinated on the court. That means nothing to me if he gets results but others cant seem to look past that.
he was the 2nd best perimeter defender in the nba last year by most stats. The last 3 years he's been an incredible perimeter defender, it just takes you guys like 5 years to catch up to reality. Hence why people think a team like the Lakers is "stacked" lol
The major problem is probably that as great as he is on defense he is FAR too limited offensively. If he could at least attack mismatches, he would get far more respect. So I think it’s about this contrast, the same way Harden got his share for how bad his effort was on defense. So it’s not overall anything different or new.
it's kind of sad to think that to the casual/nba fan half of the entire game goes unappreciated and unacknowledged. i cant think of a sport where this is the case as much as it is with basketball. even football's step brother, special teams, gets more credit
For some reason some of the greatest defenders get bad reputations especially as a teammate. People like Rodman, Metta/Artest and now Gobert. He'll probably get a bit more respect after his career is over
It seems like he is really good against the whole NBA, but the really good teams can make him a liability or at least take away from his effectiveness. Which is in part why the jazz is so good during the season and haven't had the ultimate success in the playoffs.
Gobert doesn't get enough respect because he is offensively limited and more casual fans have a strong bias towards offense. Edit: They pretty much say this.
With the level of shooting in the nba right now he just gets played off of the floor on defense, which is supposed to be his specialty. It’s also sorta ridiculous that he hasn’t developed a post game
NBA should start using the ACB (Spanish league) valoration metric wich I believe is a better metric of how a player performed in a game. It's calculated as (Points + Rebounds + Assists + Steals + Blocks + Fouls Drawn) - (Missed Field Goals + Missed Free Throws + Turnovers + Shots Rejected + Fouls Committed).
There is one unfair and two fair reasons why Gobert isn't valued that high. The unfair reason is that defensive performance isn't as obvious as offense. Even the advanced metrics are useless without context, so average viewers have no way to grasp the value of a great defender. Now for the fair reasons, one is that with the way the game is played the past few years in the playoffs, a lot of teams sub out their center anyway, so drawing the opposing Center out of the paint is sometimes part of their plan anyway. The second is that even when there's a forward defending him he will still score about 10 to 15 points. If you can't go off when you have a mismatch, then you're not really a star to lead a team to the finals.
I’ve always said this: people discredit what Gobert does, but if he was on the Warriors or Nets, everybody would be bitching about how unfair they are.
Or just put him on Bulls. The elite defense of Caruso and Lonzo in perimeter paired with Gobert's elite paint protection, that team is scary to face. They will hound you on perimeter, and if you get past that you'll stick with low percentage inside shots cause Rudy will just force you to take those shots. He may not block you but he will force you to tkae that inefficient shots
People respect him but folks want him to develop his game on the offensive end like he did on defense. He similar to a Rodman or Eaton. He develop the offense and the jazz are champions
He's averaging 15 points a game with the highest FG% in the league. No one can stop a Conley/Gobert or Ingles/Gobert alley oop. Edit: He's improved on offense every year, in percentage, offensive rebounds, and free throw shooting.
It's a few clowns in the media and a few delusional fans who think that, Chris Vernon of the ringer for instance has been acting as if he is Anthony Bennet or something in his post trade reactions
It's if a few top players got together and told all the media to report Rudy's some jerk. They've made up entire narratives about how he gets played off the floor in the playoffs. That's not true if you look at the advanced metrics.
In 1995 he woulda been goated but shooting happens to be a requirement of basketball today so ya I dunno i cant see a team winning a ring with rudy as one of their go to players.
Simply because you can't make a highlight reel out of defensive plays. People wanna see dunks, step back threes, ankle breakers, big numbers, etc. The only defensive highlight we see sometimes are emphatic blocks and fancy steals. Just look at the highlight videos posted all over UA-cam. You'll never see a good defensive stop from a team, nor will you ever see Gobert dominate two 7-foot centers all on his own.
He hasn't exactly been playing with lob friendly or passing guards getting only 7 shots perg. And getting his off almost only orebs. 15 plus points on that few shots. Is ridiculous . Hassan another who got 5 shots and is criminally underpaid. You 3 ballers don't realize their shooting % ages are equivalent to your 40 % 3 shots . And you ignore them . 71 % for RG and 65 % approximately for HW.
Its not a problem to like him or not, its just to say whether the guy is a good basketball player or a good defender, or not. Imo I dont think he is. He is really slow, he also lacks of energy and determination, he makes some rare blocks and scares offensive players, but just because those players are more concerned to get blocked and be laught at than to try to score. Whats the problem if you attack him 10 times and get blocked once ? There is no shame at all against a giant like him. He just plays in nba and basketball because hes super tall. He doesnt have any offensive skills above that and even for individual defensive skills he has barely none ...
Basketball is about playing a role. Especially in the nba. He doesn't need to score. They have plenty of other people who can get a bucket at a quicker (less effort) rate. If he was on another team with deficient offense then yeah. He averages like 15 rebounds getting 2+ blks per game that's his contribution to winning.

If he has a Finals MVP type series I think he could turn it around but it really will take that.
7) Aaaaannnnd his contract is huge. Huge enough it kinda hold the Jazz back a little. They expect for that money that he will have the offense of KAT to go with it. He really does need a hook shot Ive always said.

He’s been really damn good this year but win shares can be iffy. Montreal Harrell who’s a defensive albatross is #9 in win shares. I think great/really damn good might be more apt then calling him dominant.

Perhaps we should just list the points defenders stopped so that people understand their impact. Ex: Golbert stopped 35 points in tonight’s game.
It doesn't work like that, only blocks and steals would count then. It's impossible to quantify how much a defender affected a missed shot.

Facts bro 💯
The narrative that the Jazz have been underperforming in the playoffs is a false one. They have only actually been upset once and it was last year. Without one of the all-stars and Donovan playing really hurt. Every other season when they have lost its been to teams that were projected to beat the Jazz by good margins.
Exactly, it’s not disrespectful to point out that he’s been played off the floor in every playoffs by an extremely common offense
NBA media is just gonna do this same old song and dance of polishing Gobert’s jock and then acting dumbfounded when he gets played off the floor in the postseason.
Rudy gobert is a beast but jokic gives him that work everytime they play but he is a beast
He either stopped trying to score/play make altogether, or intentionally fouled himself out of the game. Those games were prob over 2 years ago though, and Jokic has gotten a lot better about controlling his emotions in that way.
@@Milosenpotion I've watched every game as well and I don't think think can say I've ever seen jokic just give up or foul out intentionally

I think I learned more watching off ball for 1 month than on ball for ~15 years.

the 5 out weakness of Utah is not entirely Goberts fault. Having undersize guards doesnt help the problem too.

Can you please get Enes Kanter Freedom on your podcast? 🙂
There's no real argument to say Rudy is bad at basketball
Someone who has multiple defensive player of the year awards can’t possible be bad lol
The fact that gobert can still average 15 ppg even when his team is 3 pt oriented is crazy.
He’s the tallest dude on the floor and should average more.
The Jazz are really missing Ingles, and Rudy more than anyone.
For some reason some of the greatest defenders get bad reputations especially as a teammate. People like Rodman, Metta/Artest and now Gobert. He'll probably get a bit more respect after his career is over
I swear if you close your eyes when JJ talks, it sounds like Zach Lowe is talking
It seems like he is really good against the whole NBA, but the really good teams can make him a liability or at least take away from his effectiveness. Which is in part why the jazz is so good during the season and haven't had the ultimate success in the playoffs.
That is how their roster is built tho. They doesn't have that much wing defenders to compliment his game
Gobert doesn't get enough respect because he is offensively limited and more casual fans have a strong bias towards offense.

It's calculated as
(Points + Rebounds + Assists + Steals + Blocks + Fouls Drawn) - (Missed Field Goals + Missed Free Throws + Turnovers + Shots Rejected + Fouls Committed).
No not at all
📠
You are very correct.
Oh Gobert on the Warriors? That team would be flawless.
What exactly is the point of the weird dude on the top right?

Can't dribble, pass, playmake, shoot, score, guard the perimeter but is an elite rim protector. Gobert is a role player, a great one but that's all.
It's if a few top players got together and told all the media to report Rudy's some jerk. They've made up entire narratives about how he gets played off the floor in the playoffs. That's not true if you look at the advanced metrics.
In 1995 he woulda been goated but shooting happens to be a requirement of basketball today so ya I dunno i cant see a team winning a ring with rudy as one of their go to players.
he has the highest field goal percentage in the league right now, averaging 15 pts a game. his role on the jazz isn't to be a scorer.
The jazz need better perimeter defenders, that way in the playoffs teams wouldn’t be able to exploit Rudy
Rudy should be a first ballot hofer by the time his career is done
Its not a problem to like him or not, its just to say whether the guy is a good basketball player or a good defender, or not. Imo I dont think he is. He is really slow, he also lacks of energy and determination, he makes some rare blocks and scares offensive players, but just because those players are more concerned to get blocked and be laught at than to try to score. Whats the problem if you attack him 10 times and get blocked once ? There is no shame at all against a giant like him.

Basketball is about playing a role. Especially in the nba. He doesn't need to score. They have plenty of other people who can get a bucket at a quicker (less effort) rate.
