- I got accepted into BNSF's Locomotive Engineer Training Program and I give you a quick run down of my experience so far and what all it includes! Locomotive engineers are responsible for physically operating the freight train around the system. They work with railroad conductors to ensure the trains get to where they need to go. Before you can become a locomotive engineer, you first must become a railroad conductor. Make sure to check out my other videos!

Congrats. They forced me into the engine program 3 weeks out of conductor class back in last May lol.
yea them forcing you to engine service is part of that raunchy oct 31, 1985 agreement... article VIII section 4... if not enough folks apply to engine service, the carrier reserves the right to force anyone into engine service provided that person/s seniority date was established AFTER November 1, 1985
@@25mfd the funny thing is there are so many set back engineers in my terminal. one guy quit that got forced they were chasing work and got forced and another guy failed the test twice
@@HyperBlueSTI
yea that sucks... makes you wonder who the heck is in charge... and chasing work is no picnic... a real pain
How can they force you?!
@@mikelowery5741 they needed more engineers and I was lowest on the totem pole honestly they can pretty much do what they want
Job security! Congratulations, I was a conductor for 5 months before starting LETP got my card seniority number 401 in Bakersfield, just checked 328 now just 6 years later. You will do great things brother! Much love from BNSF Bakersfield terminal
Do you go up and down the tehachapi’s?
As someone who has been on the fence about leaving the chemical plant world to join the railroad, I’m very excited for this new range of content you are going to deliver! Congrats man.
My dad worked for the Rock Island, then CNW, then BN ....I hired on CC in 1994, then from merger IC...I hired at 17, retired 2 years ago now own a trucking company, my house and Texas is paid for, 9 semis are paid for, 2 are on a note, just added 3 expedite vans this year ....it's a great life if you have the time, and rewarding....
I agree Jon that anyone that’s thinking about LETP should go for it. And take it all seriously. Lot of information. If you go in with a serious mindset and want to learn you will have all the tools you need to succeed in passing the program.
congrats... you just picked the BEST way to stay warm during the winter months... wear a engineers cab
Hey, I appreciate all the time in effort you put into these videos specially to a person like me who is actually a new conductor trainee at BNSF in Chicago. I will be going out to Kansas City the first week of April. Currently I'm getting through my first week here at my home facility, but I just wanted to come on here and just let you know how much I appreciate your videos especially when I was trying to find out more about the conductor life, you have been very clear in the picture you have painted and your knowledge about conducting and it has been a help to me thanks once again and I hope you have great success in engineering.
Congratulations you are going to love this craft I've been an locomotive engineer for 22 years and I love it be safe
Wow! Great news Jon. Congratulations. Thanks for giving your insight on the experience
Congrats man! Just started mine at CN (finished the classroom/simulator portion last Friday), seems pretty similar to how CN laid it all out though (starting with phase 2 at our training center in Winnipeg, we didn't really have a phase 1). Definitely changed my perspective and gave me a new appreciation for our engineers.
Is that you mr golden reverser??
@@benjlar1902 lmao, maybe...
Remember you have to stop within half your sight distance while looking out for Terms D
Congratulations on the new opportunity many blessings and be safe happy railroading❤
I am the only one in UP history to pay my way through Locomotive Engineers School as a non-employee. I had no formal experience whatsoever. I graduated on April 30th 1988. It was 2 weeks. I took 2nd place with a 98%. I rode with several engineers that Summer. It was the funnest year of my entire life!!!!!
How much did it cost? We're you offered a job afterwards?
@@darrellvolentine317 The cost was 1500$, and I had a job offer by The Wyoming & Colorado Railroad before I went to school. We had to be UP certified to operate over the Cascade Branch out of Nampa Idaho. The railroad went belly up just after I graduated, So it was all for not. I did take a lot of pride in going to engineers school though. I took 2nd place in school,
Congrats on the promotion.
It’s definitely a huge step to take and a lot to take into consideration.
If I ever get back on a class 1, I really can’t decide if I’d want the seat. Far less assigned service witch means you’re gonna go OTR for a long time.
Plus trip optimizer is lame lol.
Good luck with the rest of your training
Very cool congrats and one of my best friends works for BNSF
Congrats man. I want to go into the program but i work on the old MRL territory so I doubt they are going to open up an engine class any time soon since they ran two engineers on each trip. Im mulling taking the promotion at another terminal and then trying to get cut back as a conductor so I can work home rails.
It’s wise to get on the roster first, since you will live with that position for the rest of your career. When I started I had the fortune of having an uncle who was an engineer. I didn’t hire out on the same railroad, but he told me to get in engineer school anywhere that my seniority would allow. Luckily my terminal was first. I had been in another terminal, but was cut off. Some guys who were ahead of me on the train service roster were behind me on the engineer roster.
@@brianburns7211yeah it’s just I live on the low line in Montana and there are only classes on the hi line, if I don’t get cut back I have to protect the hi line for three years and can get forced up there after the three years. I enjoy working on the MRL.
Congratulations man I can not wait until this happens too me with Norfolk southern or CSX.
Congratulations bro I went thew in November. Just marked up on march 1st. Shane is the best instructor
Well first and foremost, congratulations on being in the LETP Program, This year I celebrated 21 years as an Engineer and in May will have 26 years with Santa Fe. With the uncertainties going on right now, having your engineers card, I feel helps you stay employed here and just increases your knowledge to what we do out here every day. When I went through the program, we were in KC for 6 weeks, all tests except for mechanical were closed book and if you weren't paying attention it was really easy to fail. All but one of the guys I went with are still out here working as Engineers on the territory, and my best friend will be retiring this year. I wish you the best John, and if you happen to be out in Calif, come hop on a freight train over the Tehachapis!
How can i buy my way into a cab ride of the mountain?
You can't unless it's on a passenger service
When you become certified I would strongly suggest running if the engineer you’re working with allows you to. That way you will always stay cut in. When I went through the program I will never forget what my engineer told me…..” I would rather you get a little air too soon than a lot of air too late”
Just the title made me smile. Congrats!
First time I was in Kansas every time I passed the LETP classroom people would come barrelling out without looking.. got ran into by a fairly cute 5 foot 2 ish girl one of the times.. I suggested the signal department put some lights up before I left. ;)
Excellent Video and Great to See you Post a New Video. Thanks and keep up the Strong 💪 Efforts. 👍🙏
UP, we call them FIT Fitemen in training. 20 years ago, I did it no regrets. It suck being a Seny Con. Then, starting over. That is the ONLY negative.
Best decision i have made with the company, in my district i am lucky and havent been cut back since becoming an engineer.
Congratulations Jon!
Congrats first off on getting accepted into BNSFs engineer training program. I know it's probably a big challenge to have to be able to learn the things you did as conductor and then translate it into holy shit, Im the one who is now going to be in charge of that three mile container train and it's my job to bring me, my conductor, and brakeman home in one piece in a job where anything can happen at any moment which could put all my combined training to test.
John I love your content. I miss your regular uploads
working on things to get back to a schedule of sorts man.
@@RailsTailsandTrails
Much appreciated. How is engineer school and training going? All the best to you and your wife. I was a long haul trucker for 13 years. It takes a special woman to marry a trucker or a railroader.
Congratulations!
Fun Fun Brother!! Lots to learn lots to enjoy.
Congratulations! I got furloughed, so I got that going for me.
Congratulations and best wishes!
You're a young fella, you'll gain your seniority back relatively quick. Just remember you are now "the boss" of your train! LOL
Scott.... Wrong.. The Conductor is the boss of the train.
@stephenthompson439 dude, I was a Condor for 15 yrs and an Engineer for 30 years, and believe me, I know who the BOSS is!!!...hahaha
We only let you think you're the Boss, cuz most of you are nodding off 😆😁😄
Congrats!
Congrats. I took the Engine service Promotion as well with my Railroad. Id still like to try and do a Collaboration if at all possible. I loved the Engine Service training. As conductors we give Engineers alot of shit about just throwing levers but it is way more than that. Its know whats 6 miles ahead and 2 miles behind. Id love to help answer questions.
Good for you! Congradulations!
Congratulations! Way to go!
I could have went about 9 months in but I didnt want to start seniority over.... 12 years later no regrets
Thanks for the advice, I put in a bid for the program back in March but withdrew because of the whole if you don't pass you don't have a job. I did fine on the conductor test but I also get nervous when testing.
Congratulations Jon.
I hope you like it I got promoted in Dec
Appreciate the feedback with you training as a Locomotive engineer. Im in Kansas right now training as a conductor. Personal opinion from me, I feel like i could wait like 3-5 years to become a Locomotive engineer. But, I'm still unsure if i want to go that route or become a Train Dispatcher.
Congratulations!!
Congrats John I have my card out of the Stockton sub divisions literally the baby on the entire sub board but I’ve been able to hold so far surprisingly and our xtra board just started the 6 on 3 off I had Chris as an instructor in Kansas City was an awesome Instructor when doing setouts/pickups don’t forget to cut ptc out been sent into suppression a few times because of it😂
Awesome, the last time I've been to the TTC was back in 2008 for crane class and 2007 for the Brandt Roadrailer.
Congratulations Jon
As someone whos on the railroad museum side of operations this is interesting to hear a class ones take. Not a lot of our engineers with the museum i volunteer for work for class 1s so this is pretty wild.
Congratulations brother!! You’re going to do well and make an excellent hog head! Job security if/when they slice the conductor
Thank you VERY much for sharing your stories and talking about your experiences. Im almost 24 and im still figuring out what to do in life but railroading has been a true passion of mine. Im just not sure if the modern times of railroading is for me. These videos mean a lot :). Thank you sir!
Always sunny and 70 in the cab!
Awesome. Congratulations. Climbing the ladders.
Thanks for the info.
Hi. Is that school still at JCCC in Overland Park? I went there in 1998 through the paid program. It got me an instant job with CSX! Loved it, and stayed in contact with one of my instructors for several years after that.
Also, do you have to put in for the Engineer school? At CSX THEY picked US within about two years. If you didn't go, you lost your job. No career conductors there.
Dude that's awesome, congrats.
Hey bro I follow you in discord, congrats!
Damn sucks that I missed you, I arrive in Kansas on Sunday for conductor trainee program
I HATE the Simulator.
I had a great time with CP's simulator in Minneapplis. Where else can you blast an absolute with a coal train on a downhill grade and not get fired?
It’s a whole different world sitting in the “seat”. You’ll see and feel things that you’ve never noticed before. Don’t let others buffalo you….if you don’t feel comfortable about doing something don’t do it. Things can happen real fast. Go home safe everyday!
Congrats bro we’ll deserved
Get ready to run TO 90% of your trips. 2010-2022 as an engineer with BNSF and 07 hire out. Hopefully they train you how to run without TO and use air. Air is your friend and can be used to great advantage. I heard that GCOR was open book now which should make it 100% easier to pass than previously. ABTH isn’t too bad just memorize every step for locomotive air brake tests and class 1.
Enjoy the 1/4 of 1% 401 match too 😂 jk.
Glad I did the program but I will say flow back would have been great in the PNW. Sadly not the case. Then HiViz just made everything crazy for me to me to keep doing it for 25 more years. Hope it works out for you.
The entire test is closed book, 100 questions, all things are combined into one test now. TO can only be used for 10% of the trip if wanted, everything else is raw dog
@@RailsTailsandTrails nice glad they let you run. Post program hopefully you can keep it that way but seems like it’s harder to no use TO later. Good luck!
You look Railroad tired
Run 8 !
… it’s far better to run the train than it is to walk the train 🚂
Lazy
Congratulations!
I have a question about the conductor position I was chosen as an alternate. What are my chances of moving forward?
I know I'm late but congratulations
Welcome back
Congratulations 🎉
GREAT PROGRAM UP THERE! CONGRATULATIONS YOU GOT THIS.... THE KEY IS TO ASK LOTS OF QUESTIONS...
Great program? Who told you that
@@TheNotoriousGAV I told myself, I completed the program!
Wow it has been a while
New *hogger* shout out!
Congrats brother 👍🏿
Remember Jon “it’s a promotion”😂
is that what it is lol
No way I was just in Kansas too, 2/11-3/1
sounds mind bending
Is it normal for a Z train to be tied down for a few days?
it's a new normal, but it shouldn't be
Hope you like it
HiBall Brother!
I wish the class 1's down in the states would help a qualified Canadian cndr with a work visa and hire on.
Because I wanna drive a steam locomotive.
How I can become a train conductor or locomotive engineer in Canada?? Do I need to do any course?? They ask for references I don't have any references?? My dream is to become a locomotive engineer because I love to travel?? Tell me please
Does your seniority reset when you become an engineer?
Ive been a conductor for 8 months and no thanks! Just looking at the engineer have to talk to the dispatchers, have to pay attention to every crossing, has to know all the customers so he can stop before, has to know PTC, and practially also has to know how to be a condcutor incase the new conductor has trouble with something because its still a big learning process and on top of all that he has to sit on that chair for practially the whole time. I get to walk outside and work at my own pace. Yeah no thanks.
Wow congrtats
So my couple questions that I have is you said that you had to take the test on Friday didn’t believe you said you didn’t say whether or not you passed it the first time I’m gonna assume you did and you said something else that if you failed this test a second time which means you owe fired from working for the railroad or you just fired from the program
got a q&a coming up soon to cover those questions for ya bud =). Yes I did pass
Hello what is the training for conductor with BNSF like?
I got several videos on this, but in short it's long and a lot to learn in a little time.
How can I get into the BNSF locomotive engineer program?
you have to become a bnsf conductor first
“Accepted” is the word I’d choose. You bid into it, and you got it. I hope you enjoy it. It definitely doesn’t have the perks people talk about.
Isn’t***
split the hairs all you want me. This was a lame troll to begin with. Yes you bid into it, LR has to accept your bid. Take it how you want. It doesn't make a difference
It does mean a difference... It's a bid job.. Not Accept.. Seniority is the name of the game...Wait until you get set back...
how much of a financial sacrifice is it, short term I realize, long term, the engineer will earn more over the years compared to a conductor.
#flowback
Man I passed my interview with bnsf for conductor trainee out here in Los Angeles. I did everything and my hair follicle test came back positive for meth!! I emailed them right away and told them I want a retest because I don't do drugs. They wouldn't let me , I was pretty bummed because I was ready to start a new career with them
Well, you shouldn't be smoking meth, or hanging around those that do. The hair follicles don't lie!
@LinwoodPowell I don't hang out with anybody that does it unless my 6 year old is doing it but that's all I'm around. And I don't do meth I never even smoked week. But yes there are false positives all the time
Green ... good. Red .... stop.
If you fail in engineer training,do you get to keep your conductor job?
Nope
I’m pulling for you. You’ll get in that right side seat.
@@RailsTailsandTrails
That’s a crazy policy
This race was boring . I wish all races would be like the Bristol race that was the best race I've seen in years.
Thay used to have conductors school in Clovis nm guess thay .don't any more
everything is done in kc now
I did BNSF engineer school 25 years ago. The course was challenging, but not too hard, if you study some, but also pay attention to the engineers that train you. This ought to be interesting.
I wonder what they teach these days. With FTO and PTC, a few years from now the controls in the locomotive will consist of a big red button. They’ll hire ex Hallcon drivers and buy them a Happy Meal before putting them on the engine. Then they’ll tell the ex Hallcon driver not to touch anything except for the red button, and only in an emergency. That will happen only if the guy isn’t engaged in playing with the Ronald McDonald toy included in the Happy Meal. This is a precursor to nobody in the cab.
My advice is to go on a local or switch engine and go back to school, since the company has a program which pays for it, or did in my time.
you got forced if you decide not to you get fired just like Norfolk southern police.
I am surprised that you would want to subject yourself to BNSF's abusive train service employment!
I chose a job so I’ll make the best of it instead of letting some company turn me into a miserable asshole that lets a job ruin their life. It’s a choice how you’re going to handle it.
@@RailsTailsandTrails If you work for BNSF, UPSP, NS or CSX they will turn you into a miserable asshole.
I seem to be doing just fine buddy.
Don't listen to this guy run away from it as fast as possible, he's just a manager in training trying to get a body in the door to fire him .
Oh look another comedian that hates life but won't actually quit.
He looks more like a Train Master in training, Hiding in the Weeds..
What I tell those poor people at work, same place your at, I’m sorry. 😂
Is the school still at jccc kc?
Yes it is
@@RailsTailsandTrails I looked into the program there years ago before I went to college and found out Johnson Community college has a logistics transportation degree program BNSF hires out of now granted this was almost the two thousands and i dont know if they're still doing it these days in 2024.
Congratulations!!
