    I’m a patron of slv. I’m a working class guy with no hope of someday owning a million dollar yacht. BUT... I can sit back with a smoke and a drink and watch UA-cam videos and dream. My favorite boats in no particular order are... mjm 50z -Magnum Marine 51 Bestia- Riva 63 Virtus- Gunboat 55 and Moonwave...BUT THE FPB’s by Mr.& Mrs. D are a step above the rest.

    Impressive to see your whole boatbuilding history and how it has culminated in then FPB. And sobering to see the heavy weather all compiled. In our sailing Television series people are always asking to seem more heavy weather, and we know how hard it is to get the footage. Great work guys!

    Great ocean footage , some breathtaking and stimulating views of life onboard what could only be described as superbly designed series of vessels.
    Your designs have enabled these beautiful boats to safely navigate in heavy seas and extreme weather ,making dangerous passage a cruise.
    Certainly brought back wonderful memories of my time at sea in heavy swells.

    I built a Bob Oram 39C cat which I did not add a hitch-hiker dual genoa rig as money ran out. I am designing a 30ft power cat 18ft beam to cruise the waters around Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Fiji where I worked on Plantation management (coconuts, cocoa, coffee) and love those waters - I have surfed in those waters at 19 knots briefly, except the engines could not maintain surfing speed... Fuel capacity was near 1200 litres which gave a potential range @ 7 knots or 1000km+... I have great faith in the design (regularly crossing several Australian, Queensland bars and heavy weather seas with absolutely NO adverse issues at any time)...

    Question-
    What is actually safer in offshore blue water cruising; a sailboat that can Heel or a powerboat that doesn’t?
    I like the benefits of Sail but wasn’t sure if a boat that doesn’t heel design wise safer?

      The glass varies. FPB 64s are 3/4" sides and forward. Same with FPB 83. The FPB 78s are two plies of glass and two plies of a super plastic used in hurricane glass sides, 12mm thick with a third layer of glass forward (about 16mm thick). we are not concerned with wave impact.

    1. seven gallons per hour , 35 euros per hour, 10 knots , 4000 miles,35 times 400 euros equals 14000 euros,2. Obviously fast twenty meter sailing vessels are safer than ten meter sailing vesselswith shorter passage times.

    so thing has no sails? it is powered through motor?

    • @stevenwright6573
      @stevenwright6573 4 роки тому

      Yes. I've watched several videos on these boats and I may be mistaken but one of them (FPB 78 Cochise) I believe started with 2 140 hp straight six diesels. Later an upgrade was done adding 2 John Deere 300 hp straight six diesels and it actually improved gallons per mile consumption. Diesels are ideal for these type of boats. They run with very strong torque (twisting power) at a low rpm. 1 ton truck nowadays can cruise at 70 mph only turning 1750 rpm. So fuel burn on these in a boat over long distance is very good. Run it just above idle at a hum and balance that with a propeller of the right size and you can find a sweet spot between rpm and gallons per hour burned while underway. Dream boat for sure.

    • @DashewOffshore
      @DashewOffshore  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Steven:
      The FPB 78s all are powered with Deere 6068 series diesels producing 230HP at 2300 RPM under M1 (continuous industrial) rating. The only FPB that has been repowered was the FPB 97 Iceberg (110 feet). She was originally powered with the Deere 6068s and was repowered with the next size block up, the 6090s. HP went from 230 to 425.

    • @DashewOffshore
      @DashewOffshore  4 роки тому +1

      From memory allowing for engine and tranny overhaul (25/40,000 hrs TBO) Wind Horse cost an average of about US$2.47/nm to operate. Similar sized Beowulf, a 78' ketch) was a little over US$3.00/nm. Both numbers are a fraction of traditional yacht operating costs.

      Us as well which is why they are so strong. The FPB 64, 83, and 97 have 3/4"/19mm thick glass as well as storm shutters. The FPB 78/70s with their larger windows have a special laminate that is as strong as the hull plating.

    • @DashewOffshore
      @DashewOffshore  4 роки тому

      Hello SK: We think we have been very efficient in our building. And the prices reflect the quality of the build, starting with the hull, the plating of which could be half as thick and still pass the Lloyds Special Craft rules. At the end of the day, our specs and details simply are costly to build. You might think this excessive, but if you are mid-ocean and caught in serious weather, it will seem like a very good idea.

      I believe it stands for Functional Power Boat, but don't quote me on that. Beautiful boat tho and it is in line with all the new data, and everything that I've heard, that suggests that LENGTH is one of the number one safety factors in rough conditions, which is I believe is called LWL = Length at Water Line

      nope, it's a secret. You gotta be a customer to know, but the "power boat" part is right. But I think they would read you in to the secret even if you bought a used one. I think used 64 footers were going for around $3.2M but certainly don't quote me on that. New is of course more than double for the 78.
