Breaks my heart, my daughter has had this for 11 years old and I finally realized it was not just shyness. Too many kids are suffering from anxiety disorder these days and not enough doctors to treat it, I’ve been through hell trying to find help for my daughter it’s waiting lists after waiting lists.
Man I was left untreated until 5th grade, and had anxiety through most of highschool but still talked in highschool, I think I got this when I was 8, but then I overcome it at 11-12
I was left undiagnosed and untreated until age 13. I am 14 now. I am the same exact same as autumn. Everyone would call me rude and i would always get in trouble for "ignoring people".
I have had selective mutism since I was 8 because of school bullying and my parents always yell at me almost everyday when I was 4-8 even after I have selective mutism. When they yell at me, my anxiety levels are extremely high and couldn't speak. I'm now 15 but I think those are the main reasons that I got selective mutism
My wife has Selective Mutism shes was diagnosed as a adult at first Social Anxiety then Selective Mutism shes still struggles with her Anxiety shes also have High Functional Autism too & its hard for her while she will speak sometimes to people like me & some support worker but with people she don't know or in public shes only whisper or use gestures so shes know how shes feels its still a battle for her but my wife loves this video its very educational so thank you lol
I have selective mutism, and when I can't communicate, I write it down, i don't get the therapy part because I don't like to be in social situations because I have autism and I am a introvert so putting me in social situations will give me more stress
I’ve had this for as long as I remember (since I was 3) for way over a decade and I still have it today. I don’t think I ever will learn how to communicate “normally” but honestly we just shouldn’t have to be forced to speak

Ah I hate it how a person MUST talk. I mean, I get it's essential for some tasks, but if someone quite literally can't speak, then what do they think pressuring them will do? It only makes them feel worse. I have had people get angry at me for not speaking when I'm unable to. I just don't get the thought process of HAVING to speak to someone.
I've also heard that if people who have a hard time speaking learn sign language, they are usually able to express themselves better. It would be great if we could spread more knowledge of sign language to the community because that helps deaf people as well. ~:~
I used to be such an outgoing person, then I realized how embarrassed just talking would make me. I barely even make comments because of this. It all started in 5th grade. I gave into peer pressure and started bullying the people I love. I just stopped talking
I have selective mutism nobody understands how much anxiety I feel I can’t do anything I can’t talk around anybody except my family and few of my friends but I don’t have that much cause I do not talk hopefully more and more people watch this and understand how difficult this is to deal with and usually only people who are nice to me are usually teachers, but sometimes not so please share this comment so more and more people can understand how hard this is can understand how hard it is to have Selective mutism.
I was selectively mute from ages 4-8. One day when I was 8 I prayed and asked God to help me to speak at school and I began the third grade school year speaking without the anxiety.
@@sofiyarini I asked God to help me speak in school and I did. He hears our prayers. He took the fear away. Maybe tell your daughter she can talk to God about how she feels. About Everything she’s feeling and about her nervousness.

I had it as a kid, and I guess people around me just thought I would eventually grow out of it. I only briefly saw a psychologist around age 5. Then I was just left to my own devices without really understanding what SM was. I'm an adult, and I struggle to this day, although I fought and got much better.
Im 16 and i am almost 100% certain that i have selective mutism, and have had selective mutism for as long as i can remember. I can't speak to teachers or students at school, and a lot of my family members... Sadly including my own father. I mostly speak only to my sisters, my nephew, my mom and my grandma, but even then, i still have difficulty speaking to them. Especially if im being yelled at or confronted by them, i stop talking and don't respond to them, usually angering them more by accident. I also have a hard time asking them for certain things.
Today, my employer or principal said, i dont talk much. I am a new teacher. I have joined this school few days ago. I fear she might kick me out of the school.😔 only god can help me. Videos on UA-cam wont help me. I will go home and sit and cry in the corner. I guess i'll be fine.
I have selective mutism. I believe quite a few people feel I am either stupid or very rude. I have good grades, am in advanced classes, do many extracurricular activities, I just cannot talk. I am trying. I am trying very hard. I am 2 months into grade 7, and other than when giving answers (sometimes I cannot even do that), I just go mute. I just don’t think it’s safe for me to talk anymore.
About half these kids suffer fron hyperacousia. Best to treat hearing issues before considering medication as the primary cause is often not psychological. Allowing kids with hyperacousia to wear earplugs during recess or during loud events can help reduce their suffering at school.
Selective mutism is different than being mute entirely. It means there are certain situations where they can speak and certain situations where they can’t.
this is the problem with mental health. people constantly judging and questioning the credibility. just because u cant see mental health issues, doesnt mean that its not real.
Yeah ok it does seem I have this I had it ever since I was little and never talked in school or around anyone really at all unless at home bor someone I know. People around me would say I'm shy or something like that but I never really understood why I didn't. Recently hearing about selective mutism it does seem like I have this and I finally can see that's what it is.

I have low profile selective mutism right now and people think that I just don’t want to talk to them and I’m being rude.
Good video! The more support we people with SM get - the faster we'll overcome obstacles!

Unlike these children I never got treated for SM, I am now 18 and I have had it since kindergarten, but it’s a lot better now😅
That's good mine is just starting to get better but I'm going to start forcing myself into social situations soon

Wait if she has selective mutism how in the world is she talking to the news person??
