Installing A Cheap Universal Tilt Steering Column In Your Hot Rod - 1956 Chevy Gasser Wagon

  • Where people just smaller 60 or 70 years ago? Every 40's and 50's car I have ever sat in, I JUST DON'T FIT. In the wagon I decided to move the seat back a few inches (sorry back seaters) and I also sprung for a new tilt column.
I didn't want a steering lock or key in the column so I went with a base model tilt with a 4 way hazard button. They're made in multiple lengths for pretty much any application. All that I needed was a universal coupler and we were in business.
The nice thing about newer style columns in the wiring connecters are typically of Chevy design. So if you have installed a universal wiring harness, it will clip right together and make for a slick install.
Leave me a few comments down below, love to read em.
Also buy a shirt so I can buy more hood scoops:

Hmm. Done this conversion the old school way before the aftermarket columns came into being. We used a tilt column from a 69-78 Chevy van back then. The aftermarket columns are based on them..use the same switches too.

See, I actually enjoy wiring. Routing, planning circuits, rebuilding instrument clusters, adding in accessories and such. Just something clean and easy to fart around with I guess... Its quite obvious thats NOT the case with alot of people from some of the wiring jobs I've seen in cars I've purchased! Some pretty scary! Nice to see the wagon back in, what wondering if it was going to get forgotten with the Black Widow now fresh on the mind. Never get tired of the Tri-five stuff. I have the same year Fords and alot of it actually does relate.

In the past, I've used a 2 bolt exhaust flange to mount the column to the floor. The inside diameter matches well and if you don't want to weld it to the column a split flange will work.

As long as you don't run off the road and run the steering column through your chest you really don't need that energy absorbing feature at all. Just fluff. Kind of like the folding hoods that don't go through the windshield and give you a crew cut.

Getting in and out of my Cuda is similar to a car with a cage in it, the GTO is simple, but fitting under the steering wheel of the Plymouth requires special movements.. I am a short fat guy, so a tilt would be great but on an E body its not an easy thing. I feel your pain, but in a shorter package.

I loved the 57 four door hardtop that you got, but a fifty six is the year they looked the best to me. I like these better than the road tour ones but we take what we get. I really enjoyed seeing a nice column in the car/wagon. Chevy was not thinking too hard when they put the "Impaler shaft" on their older rides.... nor were other car companies for that matter. I think I told you I used to drive a wrecker for my dad as a kid so some wrecks were um... narely. I keep thinking that this 56 is kinda leading you to a upholstery shop before its all over. This will be a first for you to have wiring management inside a rig. Have fun out there doing the race thing... its like a virus, once you start racing, it stays in your system. A little spritz with a rattle can inside and head for the show being towed by a 55 gasser/plow car. I was down south in the lower forty eight many years ago and seen a engine hoist hanging off the back of a car towing another. Cheers

Time to get a 6.0 LS from a "Salvage" job and maybe freshen it up with new rings, lap the valve seats... valve springs, lifters and cam... optional? [but would make fab youtube content]. So much reliability and then you get to rip this traitorous 454 apart and keep it for some other drag monster and have a nice reliable grocery getting Wagon of most people's dreams [certainly I'd call it a dream wagon]. New painted [patina'd] hood after you get the LS in it though and Turbo [no scoop as it will be a grocery getting SLEEPER wagon]. :-)) Dani would perfer the reliability with the 6.0 LS... could you stroke the 6.0 to something closer to like a 427 number... hmmm lmao

Dan, you said something about being or not being an idiot, well your definitely NOT an idiot! You have a world of knowledge and talents about building cars in my opinion. I do have a question and I’m not trying to be a smart as$. Your title referred to the wagon as a “Gasser”, what makes this car a gasser? I’m older now but in my younger hotrod days, it wasn’t a gasser unless it was jacked up in the front and had a straight axel. Most gassers back then didn’t have fender wells and the back end was way lower than the front and was supposed to help traction. Maybe I’m just thinking about the dragsters from all the drag tracks that I attended and raced at…

The grant hub & horn kits are cheap pot metal hubs and have always been junk, never work right and horn button fall apart in short order. The cure is a GM steering hub & horn kit for a 60s corvette or Chevelle with a Chevy SS 3 spoke stainless14 inch wheel or if you got the money a wood Vette wheel that all use the heavy duty GM hub and horn kit & button. Also the Olds SX stainless 4 spoke wheels also fit the GM hub and are very nice as well but the grants are built to fail. That Grant wheel you got is a 12 inch, all the GM wheels are a 14 inch , you will like any of the GM wheels.
