Some of them move up (Paul Wall, UGK, Slim Thug, Yella Beezy, etc.) but most of these guys can make money just by locally grindin. Independent artist just have to hustle a little harder. Texas has a few hundred cities that are about 15-20k people. Lets say that an artist gets known statewide with a few songs. This said artist can book a few shows (let's say they average a very low $5k a show). Hit 10 of these cities ( for two weeks) for an entire year (52 weeks). Oh, throw in Louisiana too! Especially Lake Charles, Lafayette, Alexandria, Shreveport.
