Hey Stephen, I got the 540 and the M805 last week. The tool fits the Pelikan so it can be disassembled. The TWSBI is good, the 805 nib will need work. It's very dry and catchy on the paper, a big let down. It is used, so it comes with the territory. If I can't get it working, I'll have to send it off. Cheers
Thank you very much for this video. I'm very delighted to get both M1000 and MB149 piston assembly taken out with specified wrench (Brought from EBay), able to lubricate with silicone grease and put it back. Very much helpful and get the piston mechanism smooth.
I agree. It was really, really well thought out and there were no repeats or un-necessary things in it. Does a MB 146 Piston work the same way I wonder...?
Brilliant! I don't own the M1000 or the 149, but this was a joy to watch. I have a similar annoyance with the Pailot Namiki 'Murex' and 'Myu' - Both requiring some mystery tool in order to disassemble their nibs. i sure would love a tutorial about that.
Epic video! hahaha I'm thinking of the MB guys' faces after this vid :) I don't think they should be worried though, most people won't have the guts to do it. It's nice that on both pens, even though they're not demonstrators, you can test if the piston works fine. The Pelikan is semi-transparent, and the 149 has an ink window. As you've shown, Pelikan unscrews clockwise, like the TWSBI. Well, that's because if it did counter-clockwise you would unscrew it every time you operated the piston!
They look okay, but I have little experience. I ordered some smoothing material and some brass sheets to clean/open the slit. I got a 10x and a 20x loupe so I could get a good look. I may try smoothing and bending the nib away from the feed some to try for better flow. It's kind of scary on an expensive nib, lol. I plan to get that Italic Broad nib for the 805, so I might see if they'll work on the med nib at the same time. Not sure if I want to make the Italic B nib into a cursive italic..
A tool is not necessary to remove the nib unit. Many years ago (1979) I saw a pen expert in Mexico City to change nibs between two 149's. He just took the section with his left hand and the nib with his right hand, using pieces of rubber to get a better grip, and did the twisting move.
My irony/satire detector was malfunctioning last night when I posted. I was only speaking about TWSBI and not MB. But I would be careful about MB taking out a contract on your life -- I'm sure they don't want to lose any income from cleaning their pens.
TWSBI still includes the wrench with their 540 and Mini Pens -- as I have recently bought both. I don't know if you can buy the wrench separately or not.
Thank you very much. I did a little bit online search and found a relatively cheaper way to do the job with a pair of modified tweezers. It may not be as accurate as the special tool, but can universally fit different MB pens such as the 146, 149.
The old Style Paragon pens are very easy to take apart... the section simply unscrews, and the piston twists out. Hari on FPN has a great topic about this...it is pinned in the Italian pens forum.
Music changed. It was a happier intro, then I see an angry frustrated face :P But seriously, this is awesome. It makes me not so afraid to get more Pelikans now.
I liked your pen thoughts and the disassembly of the 149.... but I never found out how to replace the nib!!! I have a 149 from around 1971 bought at the Pen Shop in Upper Regent street, London. I dropped the pen and it landed on the nib which has been pushed up and not sitting properly in the nib holder. I can unscrew the nib assembly but cannot extract the nib to adjust and polish etc. I need help in HOW TO extract the nib. This would be appreciated as I am not in the UK and hate to think what a 5 min job will cost!!! Can you help or point me in the right direction. Donald
Hi, Stephan. Now you have already purchased your tortoise brown M800, can you say if the TWSBI wrench can do the job? Besides, I've just bought my M800 italic nib, and I'd like to know how long should I expect to be necessary to do some maintenance in the piston system. Thank you.
Thanks for another excellent video, Steve! Do you know if the TWSBI wrench will work on the Pelikan M805 piston? Not that I want to mess up with the warranty now but I'm sure there will come a day when boredom and curiosity will get the better of me :)
Hi Doc. Thank you for the great video. I am very interested in this tool. But I can not find it on ebay by searching montblanc tool or montblanc wrench. Would you please let us know the seller detail of this tool? Great thanks :)
Haha now Mont Blanc (whoever that may be) is/are going to be...annoyed ;) Great job! I couldn't find it on eBay either, but that's ok. One day I'll just ram my Swiss Army knife toothpick in there ;) (no I won't). Anyway: great stuff. Tnx & Grtz!
Great tutorial! I own a bloody MB 149 from the late 1980's and would love to be able to do my own maintenance on the piston and hopefully the feed. I searched eBay and came up with nothing about any tool or wrench for the 149. Can you provide any info on the seller's username on eBay?
Love it! Can't seem to find anything on ebay but I commend you for having the guts to take the 149 apart. I wouldn't have any hesitation to take my piston out but probably the feed. Is there a specific lubrication recommended for the piston?
Great video. I have just received my pre-own MB 149. There is a slight looseness to the piston and I was wondering whether some silicone grease would fix this issue. Could you tell me what is the distance between the 2 pins for the MB pin spanner (maybe a weekend project to crease one)? Where did you get it from?
Quick question here mate :) what kind of grease do you put? Ceramic Grease? Teflon Grease? Any grease? Will the grease affect the ink in any way? many thanks!
hello. i used cologne to clean my pelikan m 150 fountain pen. and the alchol resolve the silikon gres on the ink piston. Then ink piston goes up and down very hardly. So i want to disassembly ink piston and use silicone gress again. but i cant. please help. How shoul i dismount pelikan m 150 's ink piston. thank you.
The 150 cannot be disassembled. The only thing you can do is put silicone grease on a Q-tip, unscrew the nib, and grease up the barrel through the section.
you will hate me when i tell you that the MB boutique hamburg is one street away from my work and they service my pens for free :-D Also, whenever i am there, i get a cookie. BOOM!
It's the Meisterstück le-grand Gold fountain pen. I asked my dad and turns out I bought the wrong ink and I almost broke the pen by trying to unscrew the end thinking it'll come off... sigh He said I need to get the ink in a bottle not the ones in a tiny plastic tubes.. I hope they allow exchange at the store :(
I'm planning to bring the actual pen with me tomorrow when I visit the store for the ink exchange. And hopefully they can help me with the refill :) and thanks for the fast reply
Stephen! you've totally raped your Montblanc warranty! Now instead of a $90 service fee, they'll charge you $120. That's a $30 additional they'll charge for you taking the pen apart in an unauthorized non-Teutonic manner. I believe they officially call it "the a5540le fee." I want one of these tools bad - I have those holes in my nib/feed unit. who did you buy from so I might contact him/her?
i googled "MONT BLANC TOOL" and all i got was the Myspace page for some bank manager in Idaho. (?) (BTW: His second favourite pen: the 24k filigree Bic Crystal overlay he purchased in Italy last year.) (And i can see why!)
Very impressive. But, uh...when you say you had to talk to your therapist, does that mean that you talked into a mirror? Or did this work out like Gollum vs Smeagol? :P
I regret to inform you that twisbi will no longer provide their wrench for undisclosed reasons and the seller from eBay apparently when you search for MB tool you get an error msg that states ' such a thing never existed, don't attempt this search again ' and Stephen .... I fear you are going to vanish and UA-cam will clam you never existed @_0

Bravo, well done! Conquering Mt. Blanc in the bleak mid-winter. A sweet, inky victory!
We salute you Doc Brown - freedom for piston lubricators....plus one on taking apart the Homo sapiens - well done Stephen - splendid video

Stephen, we saw you unscrew the piston from the pen body but are you also able to unscrew the blind cap from the brass piston?
Epic video! hahaha I'm thinking of the MB guys' faces after this vid :)
I don't think they should be worried though, most people won't have the guts to do it.

Thanks for this video.. it helps me to solve the piston problem for my Meisterstuck 149
I found a thin 7 mm wrench in my bicycle tool box that worked perfectly. Thanks for the video.
Nice find! I wonder if the m800 is the same tool.
A tool is not necessary to remove the nib unit. Many years ago (1979) I saw a pen expert in Mexico City to change nibs between two 149's. He just took the section with his left hand and the nib with his right hand, using pieces of rubber to get a better grip, and did the twisting move.
Yes, I've found that that often works too.

A fascinating instruction video, and I am saying that even though I had no reason for watching as I have neither of these pens.
I'm glad you enjoyed it.
TWSBI still includes the wrench with their 540 and Mini Pens -- as I have recently bought both. I don't know if you can buy the wrench separately or not.
What a wonderful video! The Dealer who sold you the tool will make a lot of money in the next days....
Great find! I always wondered if the TWSBI wrench would work with my M800's. I will have to try. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much. I did a little bit online search and found a relatively cheaper way to do the job with a pair of modified tweezers. It may not be as accurate as the special tool, but can universally fit different MB pens such as the 146, 149.
Thanks for your help, I'll let you know what happens once my supplies (micro abrasive pads and brass sheets) come and I fiddle a bit.

Mine slides out of the nib collar, but those feed combs are frail so be very careful.

Hi, I have a broken piston and I was wondering if you know if it's possible to get a new piston part? The bit you took out?
Hi Doc. Thank you for the great video. I am very interested in this tool. But I can not find it on ebay by searching montblanc tool or montblanc wrench. Would you please let us know the seller detail of this tool? Great thanks :)
Congratulations doc! Now you must find a way to dis assemble the Omas!
When my m805 and TWSBI 540 come in, I'll check it out.
Haha now Mont Blanc (whoever that may be) is/are going to be...annoyed ;) Great job! I couldn't find it on eBay either, but that's ok. One day I'll just ram my Swiss Army knife toothpick in there ;) (no I won't). Anyway: great stuff. Tnx & Grtz!
Great video!
Your best video to date.
That's brilliant! Glad you were able to figure this out.
Super helpful video, as always. Do you know if the Twsbi wrench works with the M600 as well?
Jaime Calleja Alderete I thought it did, yes.
Don't mess with Doc Brown's Piston!!!

and credits to TWSBI's wrench
A terrific video. Thanks much!

I use silicon grease because it does not affect ink quality.
Ah! thanks ^^
Hello how do i buy the remover tool ?
Thanks
Zev
have you ever tried the 5th technology by parker?
Very nice hints! I thank you a lot. Best regards.
Well done - thanks.
Thank you.
Great Scott!!
Hi
Is the barrel after in screw waterproof?
The Montpelikan Police are looking for you. I told them I hadn't seen you.
Stephen! You're so cute when you get mad!

You're braver than I am ;)

That is upsetting :-).
I'm trying to replace my ink and it's impossible to disassemble my pen.. I'll have to take it in to the store for help..

what pen is it?

Yes, you'll have to refill this pen from a bottle, it won't take cartridge refills.
How much was the pelican?

Hehe :) Well...to top it off, perhaps all you need now is a rap battle like this one between Gollum and Smeagol? watch?v=Hs4Ma7J0cyg
...on the M1000 I mean.

lol montblanc dont know crap about pistins and what can be dissesimbled and what
