(I know I did that backwards, but I had been having some stability issues that I thought might have been my 3600x and decided to make that change at a time when graphics cards were still outlandish. I've only recently been able to justify the upgrade with the 7900 GREs price to performance. I figure I'm good now until 2027-2028 for the kind of gaming I (and my son) do.

I am happy with it and it cost less than half what a new build would have cost. I still want to go to AM5 but I am waiting until the motherboards come down a little more. When I was looking a decent motherboard was close to $300. Now they've become much more affordable but I don't need to upgrade as of yet. Maybe this spring, maybe next black Friday? I just have the pleasure of taking my time and still being able to play games.

    Due to finding an amazing deal on the RX 7800xt, I decided to upgrade, as the performance of the 1080Ti was on the edge of what I wanted as I am playing on a QHD 165Hz Monitor.
    Now, I sold my PC for a great price and wanna upgrade to the 7500F and my 7800xt to get the AM5 Platform and the little Performance uplift. But the reason is more the Upgradability of Am5 and my wish of building in the Lian Li A3 Wood Case rather than the performance I get through the insane value entry Am5 CPU.

    Wow. those were some impressive results, not every game benefited from the change in CPU but those that did were quite substantial. Makes me wonder what the results would've been like with a 9800x3D with FSR. Since I myself have been considering upgrading my PC but keeping my 1080Ti for now, so a 9800x3D and DDR5 Ram would certainly help in FPS Results, that and with the improvements to the 3D-Cache you can now also Overclock the CPU Compared to the 5800x3D and 7800x3D.
    So all that could push the 1080ti to be quite usable for a few more years, you could probably even switch to 1440p for games like Red-Dead Redemption 2 and Spider-Man Remastered.

Upgrading recently to a i5-12600k, it turns out, it was the CPU bottleneck all along. It's definitely given my 1080 ti more room, as I can turn down settings in CPU bound games and get much more fps. I can even knock res down to 1080p and still play the latest games easily and with a stable experience. In which tests was the system up to 55% faster? Neither the X3D is that much faster than the non3d variant, nor is the 7900GRE that much faster than the 4070.
      Normally the X3D CPU should be 20-30% faster (within CPU limit) and the graphics card 20%. Maybe in a few CPU-heavy scenarios that really benefit from the cache it could be more. But a 7900GRE would never be that much faster, even overclocked. Would never have done an "upgrade" like you did, it would have been a total waste of money for me. But at least your brother can be happy.

      @RudiRatte-v1p it was on Forza Horizon 5, without upscaling, using just TAA, 1440p. Note i only measured it in FPS maxes, not averages of 1% lows or anything. It was an extreme case. I would like to clarify again i was testing my brothers computer vs mine, not my computer with both graphics cards. I tried to stay still in the same area on both systems. There is probably a large amount of error. the GRE is up to 30% faster with the overclock because its around 18% faster stock to begin with. the 4070 was just a really dissapointing card in my eyes for what i had paid for it late last year. Most of the reason was because my 4070 was near vram limit and my brother also needed a new card as he was using a 2070. The performance dips i was having were just an extra reason i could add so i could justify myself upgrading

    • @Hamborger-wd5jg
      @Hamborger-wd5jg 19 днів тому

      i have my GRE at 2803mhz boost clock, 2590MHz memory clock, 977mV core voltage, and +15 power limit. i consider anything under 80 fps rough, and the 4070 was regularly dipping below 80. The card also had a coil whine i didnt want to hear that for some reason despite pushing 330 watts into my GRE, the coil whine is less on the GRE than it is on the 4070. I didnt have enough for the 7900XT, and the 7800xt would have been more a sidegrade. I didnt feel like waiting until next gen, so the 7900 GRE was the choice. 7 months into owning this card, i dont regret the choice. I hope you're enjoying whatever gpu you have too.

    I went from a 3600 to a 5800x, gpu is a 6700xt. Noticed a significant fps boost in most games. Even with Cities Skylines 2. The 5800x didn't come with a cooler. So I went with a 240 aio. I wouldn't use the stock cooler that came with the 3600 unless I had to. I will say having run the 3600 since 2018, I think it was one of the best value Am4 cpu's ever.

    Things that stood out
    Doom Eternal: more games need to follow this. There's barely any difference so it's clearly well optimized game, regardless if it's GPU bound you'd expect >6% difference
    A lot of the games that are on the edge of the 60fps avg with some more in depth manual tweaking (IF only presets were used and how aggressive those presets are in turning down features) might be able to hit it natively with no FSR. ie 16xAA to 8x or 4xAA, lower Shadow quality, low reflections. At least in my experience historically those chew up resources for the least amount of graphical payoff. Though in general I have mixed feelings about the results- a little bit disappointing considering what 1080ti's still go for on the used market and the 5800x3d is no longer in production. This is the best case scenario for this 1080ti setup. Very unlikely someone is buying a 5700x3d or 5800x3d to pair with a 1080ti long term. Generally it just fell a little bit short. Was expecting high 50's-low 60's native, instead it was low 50's high 40's natively. It's still got life and is extremely viable which is amazing for what is nearly decade old card. FSR High/Quality isn't that big a dropoff in visual quality generally vs native. But FSR is almost required so to me that means the end is nigh for the 1080ti at least for AAA gaming (once you need to FSR low that's prtety much over its pretty horrific generally)

    I bought a bunch of pascal 1070/1080 and one 1080ti after the GPU scalping stopped. They replaced all the cards like 1050ti,1060 3gb,970,R9 290 that were being used during crypto. They all were sold off though within the year as modern AMD 6000 cards were popping up for crazy low prices. I was glad to get rid of all my old parts. 2024 was all about selling off quality AM4 combos all on 500 series boards and 5000 series CPU's. Only have a single B550/5700X3D/32gb w/ 3060TI out in the garage.
    My recommendation is when you come across a modern Nvidia 3000 series or AMD 6000 series at a screaming price then sell off all your old cards. About 2 months ago I sold my last pascal GTX1080 for $100 after buying the $160 3060TI. Sell the old stuff while there is still some market for it. All my AM4 stuff was just fine and worked great but wanted it gone before the used market was overly saturated with it.

    Great video! 😊 👍🏻 One comment though: I think when you show the Spiderman clip from the OG system, you point towards the wrong number: the 34% CPU usage is not the problem, it's the single core speed of 3200 MHz. Obviously the game does not utilize all cores, or we would see a 100% CPU usage. The bottleneck gets resolved when the _speed of the cores used_ jumps by over 1.2 GHz, enabling the card to use all its power 😊👍🏻 (Edit: of course the additional cache of the x3d helps a lot as well 😃) This is similar to what I saw when moving my GTX 1650 from a Core i5-4590 system to an AM4 Ryzen 3 3100; I got like 20 FPS more and was a bit surprised at the time, as I did not expect such a large jump 😄
    TLDR: if you upgrade the cpu, depending on the game, single core performance might be more important than overall performance. Of course, when you can get a cheap x3d, its a no brainer 😊

    looking to move to a 5700x3D , i myself have a 3600x. The problem is that the card never is used to it's full potential when lowering settings since it is pulled towards the CPU. Having games utilizing at 1440P a 1080 Ti between 40 - 75% just on medium settings is just ridiculous. Half my card is never used because i want to use optimized settings since high - ultra is just to taxing for a higher refresh rate monitor. Yes it pairs fine with a 3600x if you only play at high - ultra settings at 1440P since then GPU usage would spike up to 99 - 100% putting your 1080 TI to do all the work but put it a tier down and the CPU can barely generate enough frames to keep your GPU at full usage and that is the biggest problem i have with the 3600x where a better processor comes in handy to keep the card relevant and under high usage and more CPU demanding games playable.

    Our youngest son was using my old gtx 1080ti. He was due an upgrade (I was replacing my cpu) so we replaced his ryzen 3600 with my old 5600x and it had not perceivable difference in performance. I feel the 3600 is the peak match for the 1080Ti. We have accepted it is time to retire so for Christmas he has a founders edition B580. It will cover the 12g vram and we were able to finally retire the 1080ti for a very respectable price. The B580 only cost £78 after the sell of the 1080ti. That is a stellar trade up for modern architecture.
    Cheers for the content, Merry Christmas to you and yours
    Edit: excellent shout on the cpu advice. The 5700x3d is the most anyone should invest if they are upgrading on the am4 chipset still. The 5600x is better price to performance than the 5700x as the very small uplift in performance vs the price difference is silly.
    Our youngest son's system specs (it does matter) were the 1080 ti/ 32gb (4k ram oc) /x570 master mobo with the ryzen 3600 that was swapped to my old 5600x. The power consumption alone swapping tot he B580 and colling in the pc have been massive. And the performance. There is still a place for the 1080ti if it drops to £150 and below in the used market. With the B580 out, the price difference in brand new architecture vs the 1080ti unsupported is massive. In a budget build these are not the parts an average gamer would have as it is all my old parts as I upgraded systems. So the performance we experienced is based on what was top tier at the time with exception of the 3600 as that was bought specifically for his pc until I gave him the 5600x.

    It was surprising just how much it was a cpu bottleneck. I wonder which CPU would get the vast majority of the uplift. Would a 5700x3d, 5700x or even just a 5600x get the majority of the uplift at a considerable lower cost.
    Great video, thanks.

      @TechLabUK  18 днів тому

      Yes, all of those will give you a similar boost in FPS tbh. The difference in performance between 1000 and 5000 series Ryzen CPUs is massive and as you can see from the video, the 5800X3D was quite bored with the 1080Ti being quite stretched. This was just an idea of the fastest for the platform.

    You do know that frame generation does not count when it comes to if the game is playable because of the input lag it causes and you should not use frame generation at all if original fps is below 60 fps without it because of how bad input lag is.

    Do you think if i upgraded my CPU (currently a 12900k) to the new 9800x3D, that would extend the live of my 3090 RTX? I am looking to increase my FPS without having to buy a 4090 or 5090 which will probably cost a fortune

    • @Yusta19
      @Yusta19 18 днів тому

      no, 12900k already maxed out your 3090 (100% gpu usage) a higher cpu wont boost your fps, if it is it will only boost 2~3% which is only a few, just keep your rig for a few years, then build a new high end one at once later.

    There's no point in building a system with a GTX 1080 Ti anymore because it's very likely that more and more games, like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, will require RT support to work at all. However, if you enjoy slightly older games, the GTX 1080 Ti is still a very good option.
