Bear and two cubs chasing a hiker in Alaska

- A man camping in Alaska had an extremely close encounter with a huge grizzly bear and her two cubs on a trail.
The clip starts with the man nervously describing the scene as two bear cubs and a mother bear are walking towards him on a trail in Katmai National Park in Alaska.
"I am walking backwards on the trail backward to the camp, the man says calmly. "The mom and the cubs keep following me and are walking at least as fast as I am."
"What I don't want to do as I'm walking backwards is stumble," the man admits in the clip.
Understanding the severity of the situation and possible deadly outcomes, the man starts pleading with the animals.
"Come on, guys," the man says, "give me a break."
Eventually, the man and the cubs made it back to camp, and the animals can be seen walking away from the man at the edge of a body of water.
Though the interaction went about as smoothy as one could expect with a grizzly and her cubs chasing you on a trail, the credit should go to the man, who handled the situation properly. He kept himself calm, and walked away from the bears with a watchful eye.
Imagine walking backwards only to bump into another bear.

In all seriousness, this has got to be one of the scariest situations to be in. First of all, it's a wild bear. Second, it's a mama bear. Third, she has her curious cubs with her. The cubs don't understand, they just want to investigate this strange animal, but with their persistence comes their huge easily angered mom. I love animals, but I gotta say, I don't envy this guy.
He did the right thing by not turning his back. Imagine just walking from camp and seeing an bear, running would be useless.
I find it odd that the mom didnt charge the guy to scare him...or if he wasnt a threat, why not lead the cubs off trail.
@@ediodimacaroni why would running be pointless?

@@highperformancebodywork3542 You don't want to turn your back and run against a bear, especially a grizzly like one here. @@bartholomewlyons Bears don't move out of the way. You move off of the path. It was not a dangerous bear, it was the dudes fault for getting closer and not going off the path. A charge is only defensive anyways, to buy them time to get away.
@TeachAble I've relocated more bears then I can count, and the only real risk is bears with cubs and starving younglings. If you ever see one on a path, just walk off the path and they go right by even with cubs. Filming it and getting closer is what runs that risk much higher. I've only been charged at a handful of times, and every single one of those was because I was getting too close when they warned me to back off.
I just see in every single comment section regarding large creatures that they are automatically extremely dangerous. I've had far worse interactions with dogs then bears and I see bears more often. If they were really as dangerous as people fear, then they wouldn't have homes in rescue centers and exotic animal trade. The risk if dying from a cougar, mountain lion, or even lynx is much higher in those areas and people don't even bother to educate themselves before going into those areas.
If the cubs ran past him he would have been dead.

He backed away without running. It’s exactly what you should do. Never ever run.
Why
Juan Cisneros Because the bear will chase you down, it will see you as prey. You have to keep your cool, back away slowly to create distance.
alexandraacreator The advice seems to be the same for bulls. Generally it’s best to back away slowly and do not turn your back until you’re about 20 feet away, bulls don’t see humans as prey but their temperament changes depending on stress and season, they are especially territorial during mating season and if they perceive you to be a threat they might charge at you if you run.

I'll bet that was exactly the case. Brown bears are as smart as gorillas, they often know better than to start things with humans. They know what guns are. If anything she might have been curious if he's going towards a food source, because they definitely associate humans with food.

@@thhall459 You should watch the movie `Backcountry`.
Mathieu S.L At your advice I watched some of the scenes. Now I’m even more terrified of bears than ever before.
@@thhall459 I don't know if this will help you with anything, but you should know that bears are usually more chill than in movies or so where they chase you until the end of the world just to kill you and not even eat. If you stay still you have enough chances to be left alone. Ofc if they are rly hungry you have bad luck and bye, but in rest if you know with what bear to make noises and with what bear to play dead it's ok. Also, funny as it sounds, bears attack less females than males, so if you're a girl you have higher hopes. Well, all this is different when we are talking about a mother bear with cubs because they are crazy protective, but it should be fine if you're not close to the cubs.

May be walking slow, but I bet he got his cardio in for the day.
@Alex Davies Indeed. In all my experiences with bears they may be territorial but so long as they aren't directly threatened they dont much care about other animals. Their territoriality only typically extends to other bears.
I lived in an area once where this was this particular small clan of brown bears and they were very well known for coming across the river to "visit" with the campers in the campgrounds and boat jetties and never once did so in any threatening manner.
I remember this one time as a teen I took out my then gf out to do some canoeing and there were 3 bears on the shore across the river and while we went out on the water they just passively watched us and before we even noticed one of them had at some point gotten up and decided to paddle out to the boat out of curiosity. One second there had been just us and then all of a sudden this brown head had popped over the side of the boat to say "Hi!". It gave me a few quick sniffles and gave a few quick chuffs as it then left to continue its swim.
We just figured it had been out wading in the nearby shallows and followed some fish into the deeper waters and came to give us a sniff or two, no big deal. I think it was following the scent of the fish guts that had been in the bottom of the boat the previous week and perhaps the scent hadnt completely gone away yet.

Most "wild animals" go out of their way to avoid us because they are trained by instincts over thousands of years that we pose a significant threat and should be avoided. When he started talking dates I started to get the feeling he was recording this specifically because it could have been his final moments.
It got a little haunting for me then.
If he said "eyeyeyey" the bears would be gone away sooner
bear sits next to guy video

@Domination YT yeah
that would likely work against a black bear, but for brown bears, it's recommended that you just play dead. "black, fight back. brown, lay down"
Not when her cubs are with her it wouldn’t, shed most likely take that as a threat. What this guy did was smart, faced the bear and walked out of its territory without any signs of being prey or predator.
I can almost feel his heart beating based on the deep breaths he was taking.. Man!! That shit was crazy I bet
😂😂😂😂😂😂
The scene kept popping in my mind of her eating his dead body with the two cubs alongside eating his entrails like you've seen them do with Deer. Horrifying thought if you place yourself in his shoes.
Midnight Heston bears don’t eat human meat tho?
I bet he had a gun (just in case), as he didn't seem afraid. When you terrified, chased by wild bears, the last thing you do is grabbing your phone to record and describe the situation for all of your 5 subscribers.
I love how the mamma bear seems to lose interest but the cubs start speeding up and the chase is back on
Mommy Bear: Now these are humans, they walk backwards.
Cub: Why Mom?
Mommy Bear: Because they are a backwards species.
“I’m hoping they go off the trail at some point, or somebody else comes along from camp.........[and they eat them instead].”
Lmaooo
basically
Yeah I was almost expecting him to add "...that's slower than me"
@@foilhattiest1 they will always be slower when they stumble "accidentally".
and she was like "how come he doesn't just git out o the way"
Bears on a nature walk. They were just out for a stroll
They were people watching?
"Oh my god! What does she want?"
"I DUNNO!"
"Wellaska!"
@@4406bbldb Yeah. Its like bird-watching, except much more dangerous for the birds (in this case, the people)
awwww... they're just like, "Hey, where's the food?" "are you grilling back at your place?" "Can we join you for dinner?" LOL
“There walking at least as fast as I am” *sees bear catching up are you sure about that buddy ? 😅
