A Short UL Perch Fishing Session

  • A short ultra-light perch fishing video, where I have taken my new compact and short (only 3'8") rod for performance testing on the local lake.
The very compact Major Craft Finetail Stream FTT-384UL model trout rod proved to be quite strong for its size and sensitive enough to be able to pick up the bites from the perch.
As you could see, at one point I managed to hook into a small pike for which I wasn’t prepared, given the fact that I was fishing with a 1gr spoon, fortunately enough, this little rod has a strong backbone and handled it well.
I was only worried about the weak 3lb mono line to snap, but luckily the pike was lip hooked so it held out. You can see me putting protective gloves on since first I thought the pike swallowed the spoon, fortunately it wasn’t the case.
Shame I couldn’t get a better picture of the pike, but I am still happy how everything turned out in the end.
Thanks for watching, and if you liked my video please don’t hesitate to subscribe.

P.s love that set up too ... I am looking at purchasing a couple of new spinning rods. One Altra light and one light to medium ... it’s a major craft rods I’m looking at as well... they are not cheap but apparently they are supposed to be really good rods .. that’s a cracking little set up though .. love it !!! 😍🎣

Nice little vid. I was out today on my lake testing out my new 5.6 ft rod jigging for perch. Bailiff said why are you using rubber jigs on here. You’d be better off spinning cos there’s big chub in there and i didn’t even know they were in there. Also perch to 5lb but they take spinners as well. So guess I’m buying some metal this week. Ps subbed mate.

Thanks for the sub! Yes, the reason I use small nail spinners is because this particular lake is extremely weedy most of the time, so spinners are the only way to fish it. You made a good decision to invest into spinners since most, if not all predatory fish will take them. Cheers!

Thanks for the kind words and for the subscription. I will try to upload more often, mainly concentrating on UL and light fishing with compact rods and equipment.
To answer your question, in the video I have used a small 1.5gr single hook spinner for the first perch, a small 2gr jig for the second one, and unexpectedly the pike attacked a very small nail spoon of 9mm and 1gr.
Guess I was lucky to lip hook it :)

Hehe, actually I was a bit over gentle with the perch and about the glove thing..I thought at first that the pike has swallowed the tiny spoon and wanted to get ready to reach into his mouth, but turned out to be only lip hooked. Thanks for watching!

Can you thell me the name of the reel ? Is it not to heavy for the rod?

No, not at all. It is very light, just perfect for this short ul rod. Pflueger President 6920 which comes approx. as a 500 reel or less.

@@p4pfisherman You're welcome. Unfortunately, I have sold the rod since, so I'm only guessing here.
It's a very nice, but very specialised rod..mostly useful for targetting shy trout in very small/narrow mountain streams. Being only 3'8, It doesn't have a great casting distance, but with the right line and lure, you can still flick it out some 20 meters.

Hi, thanks for the comment and welcome to my channel:)
It's the OGK 30 folding net, used mostly by Japanese tenkara flyfishermen.
Here's a video I found on the tube, If you want to take a closer look. Also, bigger Japanese brands like Shimano and Daiwa are making them as well.
