CGQ Mixtape - Sega Genesis Hits of 1991

- I’m trying something a little bit different with this video. For whatever reason I suddenly got fixated on the idea of buying a cassette deck to add to the basement stereo system. Cassettes are what I grew up with, and as a result I’m far more nostalgic for them than I am for vinyl. The portability and relative durability of tapes was great back in the day, but the real game-changer was the fact that you could record your own, rather than relying on whatever pre-recorded stuff you could buy. This meant making copies of your LPs and commercial tapes, but it also meant that you could get creative by creating your own tapes, and most people did this by making mixtapes, which were the Spotify playlists of the 80s.
With that in mind, when I picked up this refurbished Denon deck at my local record store, I was actually far more excited about buying some blank tapes than I was about collecting pre-recorded ones, because I wanted to make my own mixtapes. There’s something cool about having to limit yourself to a set amount of time per side, and ending up with your chosen selection of tracks on a piece of physical media that you can hold in your hands. And there’s something cool about the experimenting with and enjoying the wide variety of blank media that was made available through the years. Appreciating not only the different sound offered by different manufacturer’s various tape formulations, but the different appearance of the tapes themselves.
Ideally, I wanted to find a way to share this interest-of-the-month with the audience, but obviously that’s not possible with most commercial music. Thankfully, VGM is far less regulated, and of course better dovetails with the focus of my channels. A [console] in [year] mixtape fits in nicely with the general theme of the show, and I hope to make more of these if they’re well-received.
Show notes:
- This is not meant to be a representation of the best games of 1991. It’s a collection of awesome tracks from that year. There were plenty of others that could have been included, but I was of course limited to the length of the cassette.
- As mentioned in the video, I didn’t use any Dolby noise reduction. I also didn’t apply any filtering or EQ if any kind during editing. I only adjusted the levels slightly as some tracks were a little louder than others. Yes there is tape hiss. Yes there is some wow & flutter. No, a cassette tape is not the best way to listen to this music from the perspective of audio quality. If that’s your concern, this video is not for you.
- Also as stated in the video, this is a Maxell UR cassette. Maxell as sold tapes by this name for many, many years. AFAIK, this latest iteration is the last blank cassette tape available at retail (though you can still buy blank tapes in bulk from other sources.) I got an 8-pack of these for $7 at CVS. For being basic ferric tape rather that chrome or metal, I think they sound very good. My intention going forward is going to be to mix it up with other brands and types of cassettes, just to keep things interesting.

How many times can I hit the "like" button? Answer: Not enough!
The 8 people who disliked this video probably like the sweet sounds of Nails on a Chalkboard.
This mixtape is both boss, and rad.
These soundtracks aged like fine wine. I miss my childhood.
As someone who used cassette tapes well into the mid-2000s - it was far cheaper to get batteries for my portable tape player and record songs from CDs/radio for bus rides and lawn mowing without skipping - I absolutely love this idea! I cannot wait to hear what other tape formats sound like with these tunes; never had anything beyond basic ferrite for myself.
** Anyone asking me to add "chapter markers" to the video is missing the point. No. **
What are some of your favorite tracks from video game soundtracks? Let me know, and maybe you'll hear them on a future mixtape!
Megaman
Dude. Temp super tracks from all the versions. Genesis has the best ones though.
Castlevania 3
Ninja gaiden
@@Kranekick1985 Those are some kickass tracks
I remember in the Sword of Vermilion hint book, they actually told you how to record the music from the game onto a cassette tape.
I didn’t quite understand back when I first played/read Vermilion back in the day, but now I realize just how cool that inclusion was. I can’t remember any other game basically telling you, “here’s how you get the soundtrack!”
I went over to a friend’s for some beers tonight.
I snuck this video onto his TV / sound bar.
One of the people attending my friend’s little soirée, a guy around 50 years of age, became emotional and began telling me stories of playing Genesis and 32X with his son back in the 90’s.
Congrats on having a channel that impacts so many people, from all walks of life, in such a positive way.
Wow, that’s awesome. Thanks for telling me!
@@CGQPlus It was a very cool discussion, with a guy 15+ years my senior, whom I had just met, yet we connected instantly over a 25+ year-old piece of video game hardware. Kinda makes me wonder if the whole world doesn’t need a little more Sega Genesis.
@@davebladegun3009 The whole world definitely needs more Sega Genesis.
building a huge barn roof by myself...was listening to older documentaries from Chris about SNES and TG16....looked down and low and behold...a new entry from CGQ. boom its on...almost finished shingling..in the home stretch with CGQ
I'd love to see a pic of the roof when you're finished.
This is the most interesting use of UA-cam I've seen in a while. Please do more and more.
Every mixtape from now on has to have the CGQ+ opening theme.
Quite often I find myself in the dreaded collector's version of writer's block. I'll look around at my games, trying to decide what to play. That's when I usually end up playing some music and do something super fun, like laundry, dishes, or cut wood. Great idea for content, thanks for this!
Dude, this is a great idea. I'm listening to this while slaving away on some spreadsheets for work.
Wow. That's a real literal mixtape! I can hear the cassette characteristics and everything. Brings me back. Love the MTV-like credits in the corner. This is a great idea! Thanks, Chris!
Your a god damn genius Chris. Now THAT'S the sound I've been looking for!
Seeing this pop up in my UA-cam feed made me do a double take because I just bought a Kenwood KX-W8030 cassette deck on eBay three hours ago due to the nostalgia bug. Coincidentally my Kenwood was released in 1991. Awesome video!
Awesome idea! I was a Maxell man, myself. Hope to see more of these. Perfect Mtv-style chyron, BTW.
I love old Denon equipment. A DR-M33HX cassette deck is a star player in my stereo system because even the girls my age can appreciate a thoughtful mixtape!
Thanks for this. The perfect morning work soundtrack. Also, the greatest track ever in the history of Sonic games!
These are so awesome, this is basically the confluence of so many loves of mine!
This is a sweet video Chris! The mixtape of Genesis music is PERFECT, great selections of some of the best music from games for that system! Love the Gaires in the background over the tape player!
That intro was second to none.... Spectacular!!! Love your work. Thank you for all you do. It's always a treat to listen to your stories.
It took me a while to figure out that the audio was actually being recorded from the deck and it was not just placed to match the video appropriately. Very well done and would definitely look forward to more of these!
The font and text format is reminiscent of '90s era MTV/VH1. Cool 😎
That is a sweet deck for sure, while I too grew up with cassettes (we're roughly the same age I think) they are actually my least favourite form of physical medium when it comes to music preferences. That being said I did purchase a late 80s Onkyo dual cassette deck that looks strikingly alot like this Denon unit because a lot of the bands I listen to sometimes put out new music only exclusively on the compact cassette, haha
Great videos, these are awesome to put on in the background while doing house chores! Cheers buddy.
*physical media
Love that you started with SOR. I have it on vinyl and get goosebumps everytime the synth starts at the beginning. Thank you.
I never owned a Genesis, so this was a nice way to sample a collection of great Genesis music.
Been listening to this while I work... fantastic selection of tunes! Nicely done, sir!
I've never played Jewel Master, so not heard that track before. Absolutely love it, thanks for introducing me to it! 😊👍
Mixmaster Chris. Awesome mixed tape!
Wow so many great games came out in '91
I love this video, and the title songs in MTV style font 👌...you won a new subscriber!!
Holy shit I had forgotten how awesome the music to Midnight Resistance was!
I remember sticking my Dreamcast's audio out through my HIFI and making a cassette of the Shenmue soundtrack, I still listen to the tape from time to time :)
Growing up most of my albums were on CD but I always had cassettes on hand for making mixtapes. I also would always keep a tape ready in my stereo so I could record a song from the radio if I missed who the artist was. With no internet or phone app to tell me who the artist was I'd go to the music store and have the employee listen to my tape. My first cassette was Open Up and Say...Ahh! by Poison.
I didn't know I needed this until I found it! what a simple yet amazing concept of a video!
Amazing video Chris! Really enjoyed it. Those of us currently sitting here in Texas snowed in with no water and only intermittent power thank you. Something the whole crew could jam to!
I actually read the other day that listening to video game soundtracks is very effective whilst working or studying, so I know what I'm listening to today
Such a great mixtape to listen to while editing videos.
I love the game overlays a ton. Next one you should and show off that tape deck's graphic equalizer! The awesome game art is covering the awesome audio-visual effect there. :)
Oh wait, is the peak of the meter peaking out from behind? Nice. Disregard then.
Some jams right here. Kicking it off right with SoR
This is wonderful dude! You could do a bunch more of these!!
Love this!!! Thx for all your hard work!! CHRIS!!!! I miss the live feed playing NES games!
3 songs in and digging it. Thank you for uploading this.
This is awesome.
I know you were more of a genesis kid than a snes kid.
But I would absolutely love a snes mix tape from you some day.
Do they already exist? Yes.
But I wouldn’t be supporting you if I went elsewhere now would I?
🙏
Practical? Not really. Whole lotta fun? ABSOLUTELY! I grew up more in the CD era, but was born early enough to have experienced tapes. I'd SO do this myself, hahaha!
Streets of rage music is still amazing after all this time
The best way to enjoy this is to treat it like a radio show, starts up slow but you'll find a few nice surprises along the way (that Batman song for me), more casual listeners might want timeline option though.Oh, including the music info is a nice attention to detail.
Incredible mix thanks for uploading! How did you get it to sound so good? Honestly these are sonically the best versions of these songs I’ve ever heard...
I dunno. I just downloaded FLAC rips of the soundtracks and copied them onto a tape...
Maybe it’s the audio quality of the tape. In any case it sounds awesome :)
Great video game soundtrack video compilation mixtape!! Well done! Great video!
Awesome! I listen to Genesis playlists all the time while working! Chris, would you be able to add 'timestamps' for each of the songs if its not too much trouble?
This us so good. Exactly how I remeber it going headphone out to Dads stereo.
Very nice & unique! What a cool overall aesthetic!
I know what I'm rocking out to in the gym today! Thanks, Chris!
Awesome mix!
Great F’N video! Loved the intro 🤙🏾
While it may not have been the best quality, it’s the sound I grew up with as well and therefore holds a special place in my heart. Good old analog media.
Just blown away with the level of skill that the Japanese developers had with the Genesis/MD sound chips, its insane. The only westerner who equaled them that I can think of is Chris Huelsbeck who did sound for Mega Turrican.
@Sega_Kid. You also had Tommy Talorico who did the music for Global Gladiators and Earth Worm Jim. But he was an exception. The best soundtracks almost always came from the exceptionally skilled and talented Japanese chip tune composers.
@@kenallen8213 probably Joey Kuras did the work....sadly Tommy has been exposed
I just finished, although I skipped through half of these for time’s sake, but I’m gonna revisit this again tomorrow and listen to the whole thing. The song selection here is terrific because there is such a variety of style. It isn’t all just Japanese music that demonstrates mastery of the hardware, there is also representation of some (good) Western music in here and I feel that tends to get overlooked by many of us. Terrific variety.
Amazing tunes. Good trucking music.
That was awesome, Chris!
The sounds of my childhood 😍
great idea, more of these please :-)
I love that Midnight Resistance song Flood of Power!!
I'm about to bump this tonight when doing my cardio bike.
Just try to avoid Sonic tunes, or you might pass out. lol
@@electronash nah I’m good man😂
Just a comment because this deserves to be seen... or heard
Awesome idea! Please, do a SNES Hits mixtape! Cassettes are so nostalgic. I still got my old AIWA cassette player, all broken and beaten up, but I just can't throw it away.
I have a plethora of ost's from the ps1 era that i listen to almost regularly. Ahhhh so many!!
Fantastic idea. Love that you included the sound of loading the cassette and pressing play, and the hiss/wow & flutter of the cassette. Brings back a lot of nostalgia for me also creating mixtapes as a kid. What did you use as the sound source? An original Genesis or emulation?
Glad you liked it. I downloaded all of the tracks in FLAC format, but I don't know how they were created.
@@CGQPlus Those FLACS that are out there are fantastic.
Looking forward to checking this out. Cool idea. I’ve been wanting to get my 5 year old a cassette deck where he could play around, etc
Vapor trail OST is up there with the greatest and more recognised soundtracks.console music is so amazing compared to the arcade.
Great concept!
Awesome video idea! Any chance you could add chapters?
Great mixtape, the only ones i was missing was Batman and Golden Axe.
Chris, I would absolutely love if you could send me a copy! I can toss you a few bucks!
I'm sure we can arrange that. Shoot me an e-mail!
Do videos with video game music get flagged or demonized? This is cool by the way. In the 90s though there is no way we would have a Denon casset player lol. It would have been a KOSS or Akai or another cheap brand.
UA-cam flags some vg music. A friend of mine’s channel made a second channel just to test what songs didn’t get flagged for use on his main channel.
Sometimes. I'll just have to see what happens going forward. I don't really upload videos on this channel for the ad revenue, so I don't mind making them unmonetized if that's what needs to happen, but if I get into copyright trouble, then that would suck. I'm going to make a mixtape of SNES music and upload it as unlisted just to see what happens.
Ooh this is a cool idea!
Great video! The batman soundtrack is pretty damn good.
Haha you already added a song 😎😎
Nice video!!!
Actually on the subject of making your own cassette tapes, a few months back I was browsing a thrift store here in the UK and they had a bunch of old, blank tapes for 20p each. So, curious to see what was on them, I got as many C60s and C90s as I could find and to my surprise most of them in that lot were actually messages recorded by this kid from Canada who'd sent them to either a relative or a pen pall back in the mid 80s.
And the content of them is so cool. On one tape he talks about watching Rambo for the first time and in another he talks about this new film that's just been released called Ghostbusters and it has this really cool song that's always being played on the radio, 'its probably not out over where you are yet'. So he tapes that (and a few other songs) off the radio and onto the tape. Honestly they're so cool
That's really awesome. It bums me out that the thrift stores (charity shops) around here don't sell cassettes, not because I want to start collecting commercially-recorded albums, but because I would love to find used blanks with other peoples' mixtapes on them, and whatnot.
@@CGQPlus Here in Britain we don't have massive chains like Goodwill but there are much smaller charity shops which seem to have their own rules per store. Really, this was the first time I came across blank tapes being sold in one, but every now and then you see albums on cassettes (and even VHS tapes) for sale, often for crazy low prices.
@@betaman7988 I think that part of the problem here is that we *do* have Goodwill. They put other thrift stores out of business, which sucks as a shopper, but also means that a lot of charities lose a revenue stream.
@@CGQPlus Thats true. Over here a lot of shops are leaving our high streets which means lots more opportunities for charity shops (who I believe pay less rent) so many people here complain that theres too many! I love them though. PS1 and PS2 games for £1 each. How could I say no?
I really get my photoshop job done when listening to this.
Got a double sided deck a couple of years ago since I was given an album my brothers friend did that he put on tape, had to replace belts but works great. Did a similar thing with N64 starting with intro music followed by regular in game tracks. Might do this with Nes and pc engine. I think one song that comes to mind for great game music is Genesis Gauntlet IV- Sortie. Such a hard synth track that has a great orchestral sound to it. Rest of soundtrack on that game is epic. Another comes to mind is ending track for Star Cruiser on Mega Drive which sounds way better than the original Japanese pc releases. People would always rag on the genesis/md sound compared to snes but with the right composer can get amazing results.
I think that at this point, belt replacement is pretty standard. Even this deck is about 30 years old. What little rubber belt is going to last that long?
excellent!
Slamming mixtape :D
Expanding to the entire 8-16 bit console realm, hmmm... how about "Forest (Door 1)" from Castle of Illusion, "Mute City" from F-Zero and anything from Gauntlet (Genesis) or Silver Surfer (NES)!
Ugh I’m stuck at a party! I need to Sneak out and Watch CGQ!!!
Like anyone believes someone named Mike McFly can leave a party. He’d bring it with him everywhere
@@Aaron-gt2qe thanks man! I guess that is partially true lol... I’ve been known to surf on van roofs like teen wolf from time to time ;)
Great video!
One question... Shouldn't Ys III be credited to Nihon Falcom since the port was only licensed to Renovation/Telenet for the Genesis port?
The programmed the Genesis port, so that's why I credited them. I also credited the original composer, so I think it's OK. Sometimes it's hard when I'm doing the on-screen game credits because in reality there are several companies that had a hand in bringing a game to a particular platform.
Nice mix!
I never played Gaiares, so I had not heard the "Opening Theme" before, but it sure sounded somewhat familiar. Then it hit me - it sounds (to me) like a stripped down version of "Sleight of Hand" from the game Herzog Zwei - a game that I played the heck out of. Does anybody else hear the similarity between the two?
ua-cam.com/video/w_PLmXBrNQw/v-deo.html
Awesome
MUSHA owns them all. Its a beautiful symphony.
This is a really cool idea!!!
In my opinion, comparing both 1991 Genesis vs Snes mix tapes, there's no contest here, Genesis all the way.
Many children have been made to these bed warming bangers.
Man, the Ys III track is Burning Battle! But the SNES version (Searing Struggle) is the best version, by far.
Sony comes with the digital Walkman features like music apps and built in storage and play all radio stations in the world in future
I love SEGA
Hi there. How do you avoid content matching in these videos?
Gaiares has some great music .
more plz.. :)
Is there a way to get a full continuous mix in FLAC or high-quality MP3? Wanna stick these mixes on a MiniDisc :D
Yeah, I put MP3 files for each side of the tape up on my website. Click on Features and then CGQ Mixtapes.
@@CGQPlus Thanks, I saw those, but they are ~135kbps and two separate files. I was hoping to get the full-length, non-split higher bitrate MP3s or FLACs. Guess I have to relearn Audacity :D
@@JTD121 Sorry, you'll have to just download the tracks, then. I got almost all of them in FLAC format from khinsider.
@@CGQPlus Ah, I was thinking you recorded them yourself from an old Genesis! No problem! Just gotta record to MD and go!
anyone here need to discover S.S.T. Band. group by many this games musicians making real versions.
Streets of Rage 1st track: I hit like.
