  • Economical way to have PLENTY of Seed Starter Mix. Danny shows how we have our seed starter mix using Schultz Potting Soil and separating the larger particles out and keeping the soil. Never waste anything! The larger wood particles make a great mulch over our sweet potatoes that we plant to make sweet potato slips.

I've been successful using compost from the yard(I know people say it can introduce disease but if that worries anyone, you can bake it in the oven to sterilize it) peat moss, and perlite. Pretty cheap and I am having pretty good success. I sift my compost pretty much the same way you are sifting the potting mix.

We do the same but use a piece of stainless steel mesh found online. We have a set of several mesh sizes. Just built a frame around it to keep it flat. The smaller & medium mesh is good for filtering leaves out of collected water or for seed winnowing very small seeds.
The largest mesh size act as a seed winnowing device as well as a sieve to make seed starting medium.
We use peat, vermiculite, perlite, compost and if we have any, potting mix. The sifted large pieces act as mulch or we use it to bulk out the soil at the bottom of planters.

Seeds are ordered and on there way . Have to do quite a few containers and going to make Hugelculture beds also . Basically starting from scratch at a new place but planning to plant alot to feed myself and 2 of my sons and their families. Canning and storing are also in my plans . Extra will donated to the local food pantry and those that cant afford produce at the local stores .

LOL, Danny, I have to say this (with all love) You look like a garden gnome on your thumbnail for the video. There's an idea for you for Etsy! Carve some Danny Garden Gnomes to sell, I'd buy one! Just plain wood, then people can paint any way they wish ( or leave natural)
I didn't have a screen so I used the cage from an old pedestal fan for screening for potting soil. It's not fine enough for seed starting, but it worked on my good black soil that broke down from my ever growing and decaying brush pile.

Danny I bought a couple bags of miracle grow potting soil from Walmart and it killed everything I used it on. Now I just go out in the woods and scrape back the duff under a tree and dig several inches of good dirt and then rake the duff back in the hole when I'm done. It's good, it's free, and I'll never buy from Walmart again. Peace and blessings.

We do same with a frame made with 1/4 inch hardware cloth.
It's 50 bagged/purchased mix and 50% home grown compost from kitchen scrap.
Depending on what we're seeding it may get some other amendments - wood ash, sulfur, pearlite/Vermiculite, worm castings, additional fertilizer... but the base is half and half commercial to home compost.
The leftover woody big chunks go into the woodchip mushroom beds so it's not wasted.

I have been spending a lot of time sieving compost to a nice crumbly soft mix that roots will be in heaven with. It is worth the effort if you have a good sieve. I also add other parts into it like fish blood bone and depending on what I am using it for I might put some potato fertilizer in there too. I am a potting making machine now before spring I have bags of it ready to go. It feels really nice sometimes I cant stop just picking it up and letting it run through fingers.

I may have to buy one of those scooter seats. I have one bad knee and 4 fused ribs and back damage from a car accident. I do lot and stay active cuz being sedentary makes it worse(try telling other pain patients that. They think I'm lying about having bad back).
But I right now have a hunting cushion taped to a 5 gallon bucket that I sit on to get work done. Being able to scoot along my rows would be easier.

I used black cow maneur once and stopped because of possible grazon in it, but today I noticed some in this video. So, I am guessing its not an issue per your experience?

Hi Danny. I'd be interested to know what you do with your seed starting mix that's in the Hoss Tools trays when you transplant the seedlings into larger pots. Since the starting mix is actually soil and has fertilizer and perlite already in it, it seems to me that it would be reusable for more seed starting later on.

It comes out with the plant and is put in the larger container. There is none left in the tray.

We did the same when we couldn't find seed starting mix at our store. I was really happy with the results!

I just keep wondering how people used to start their seeds, before these pre-mixes, all these special ingredients that you don’t necessarily find where you live. Does anyone know?

Danny I have a tree pruning question if you have time. I’ve an Granny Smith apple tree that is 27 years old and never been pruned. It does put on a few tennis ball apples every year, but I’ve let birds get them. It has not started to bud and I need to do something. My thoughts are to cut trim out as many of the waterspouts as I can and the dead branches on the lower outside. I know I need to open up the center, but am leery of trimming to much out at one time. I figure this for this year and then open up more next year. I believe the tree has plenty of good production in it if cared for properly. Does this sound like I’m on right track? I realize you can’t see my tree and are only going on my description. Your thoughts would be helpful

This is fine . You don't want to take to much the first year.

High Mowing Organic Seeds, Pinetree Garden Seeds & Fedco.
      I'm on my 4th order.
I actually ordered from Seeds of Italy this year. Their packages have a bunch. Pinetree has reasonable prices.

Seeds don't need any fertilizer to germinate. That's why seed starter has no fertilizer. Plants don't need fertilier until they get their first leaves. Then you can use liquid fertilizer until you transfer your plants into bigger pots, then you can use potting soil that has fertilizer.

So, if you open a bag of soil and it is moldy, is it all right to use?
