Sam Howell could be the future. If Geno doesn't ball out this year, we will probably see a Sam Howell vs 2025 rookie QB competition. He is a low end starter/high end backup to me.
Howell has the perfect mentor in Geno Smith. Would love to see us keep him around as a potential answer in the future. Anyone who doubts him should look at Josh Allen's early years. :D
He’ll take Geno’s spot when the time comes, which could be next year. We should still hedge and draft a young QB next year - but he’s a nice stop gap with upside. I.e. we won’t really know until he plays with the 1s under Grub and Mac

@@iron_bison i think there were teams trying to get him when we did is what he is trying to say but yeah comparing to this draft class is a little silly though he could be better than some down the road.
This trade was a masterful move by JS. He’s an upgrade from Lock at a fraction of the price. I don’t see him becoming a franchise guy due to circumstance and the fickle nature of the league, but what I do see is competent starter potential with some possible upside we have as a low cost backup. I think we likely extend Geno at some point and we end up letting Howell walk at the end of his contract. If he does decide to sit four years behind Geno, I could see the potential of him developing into that franchise guy. I just don’t think that’s likely.

Because Howell is so cheap, Geno only gets extended if he balls out. Like…. really balls out. Which would be awesome. And hawks fans should all be rooting for that. 40td 4700 yard Geno season. Deep playoff run.

Possibly he can get to that level. But I still say extend Geno and have h8m as the QB floor with Howell potentially becoming a higher ceiling.
I think our definitions of hangover might be different. I think Howell has potential, especially if he learns from Geno a bit. What I like is he seems to be able to make all the throws, he is mobile enough and doesn't seem to panic. I did notice though that he could not adjust on the first two drives on his own, then Grubb flipped the script and went to a quick, short passing game and he started being productive. In short, he is still young and still highly reliant on scheme and play calls, not progression. Another year and that may completely change.
I think Sam Howell will be the future for this team. Why else would we have outbid other teams for him. I can see why we outbid the rams but why other teams? We see something in Howell that other teams did. Give him another year to watch and learn from geno. Even he said the only reason he threw so many picks was bc he forced the throws bc they were losing. He has looked pretty solid this preseason getting out of harms way making good throws and also learning to not force anything. He has upside but only time will tell with him sitting behind geno. Who knows maybe we keep Howell let him develop a bit more and trade him for draft capital.
Seahawks are king of making qb better than they would be otherwise. Howell possibly could be next TBD in next 1-5 seasons depending on geno’s performance first. I see why we scooped him up. I like the potential but we’ll see
I think he could be a great Seahawks starting QB. He could develop into a guy like Matt Hasselbeck where if he has the right players around him he can be a very important piece of the Super Bowl puzzle.
Howell has great potential!. The guy has a HUGE upside. I'd say let him sit behind geno for another year and learn more, and he might be able to take over as the starter in 2 years.
I don’t really know if you consider Geno to be a franchise guy but in 2021, we weren’t even asking whether or not Geno could be anything more than a career backup, much less a franchise guy. We just assumed he would be a career backup. With Sam Howell there is that question on whether he can improve and become the franchise guy but it all comes down to him. He’s got the arm, he’s got the athleticism; now he just has to learn more of the mental game to avoid the sacks and turnovers.
Coaching matters - especially at 23 years old. Hold Geno another year and see if Howell continues to develop. I am guessing a 25% chance he becomes a top 15 quarterback.
I could see Geno Smith pulling a Fitz early on in the season if Howell keeps playing well. I could also see Howell getting the nod to start next season. There’s a chance he overtakes Geno if he stalls this season at all. Howell has a lot of fans in WAS and SEA sees the fit and it’s a defensive team. He finished qb 12 PPR last season, might be more exciting than Geno with his rushing upside. Only 23, depends how long he needs but around year 3 is when I predicted him to break out after WAS drafted him which is this season. SEA is a perfect fit for him I feel like so it just depends how well he does week 3.
Brendon, did you compare Howell is Tua? I have to replay that. Howell reminds me more of a Ryan Fitzpatrick. A gunslinger. It would be interesting to see, if Howell, got really good coaching, to reach his potential. Not downplaying the Seahawks offensive staff, but, I'd believe if Howell was with, say, the Rams, getting coached & developed by Coach McVay's & his staff, then we could really see the full potential of Howell.
Nobody can predict the limits of Sam Howell but Sam Howell it's totally up to him all I know is he's young and has been thrown into the nfl starting qb fire , that said if he doesn't develop and improve and snatch that job off of geno then he will end up the backup qb, but for now it's qb 101 learning time , go hawks!

When was the last time a team gave up on a QB they drafted and he went on to be a franchise QB? It does happen. It's just really rare. Brett Favre. Steve Young.
