There is a difference between pathan and khan. Khan is a popular surname which is used in central Asia which means noble man. The female term for khan is Khanum which means noble women.
So almost all Pathan used sir name khan and some minority used the word sherwani as surname and many more other surnames.
All khan are not Pathan.
Because a lot of Turks used khan as sir name and also in the Delhi sultanat and Mughal Empire the emperors gave title khan to soldiers. Generals. Mansabdar for their extraordinary work.
So if someone had khan sir name doesn't mean he/ she pathan.
