How Much is Too Much?

- This week I'm discussing ticket prices after a spat broke out in the press and online over what some described as "astronomical" costs to see Sabrina Carpenter at her forthcoming UK shows. She's not the only artist to be hit with criticism about prices and whilst it can be an expensive business, is it right or necessary to charge fans so much?

For that price, I'd expect Sabrina Carpenter, The Carpenters and Jesus the Carpenter to appear on stage.
🤣
or expect her to help finish my garage for a day.
You are indeed a 100% wise guy
You forgot John Carpenter

Video killed the radio star, Internet killed the album star & Ticket Master killed the live concert star.
Ticket Master is in the middle. We're hitting 30 years since Pearl Jam made a fuss and failed.
@@brandall101 In terms of their lives Pearl Jam did not fail. You're still talking about them.
@@johnwattdotca I meant fail to take down TicketMaster. Obviously the band took a step back from their commercial heights but that appeared to be an artistic choice (ie. promotions/videos, etc).
@@brandall101 Taking a step back from commercial heights is what the music biz corporations would say, me seeing the band as keeping on keeping on. A band is a business, while the musical lives of the musicians keeps going, music being a part of life and another way to communicate.
@@johnwattdotca Oh for sure, they had (have?) a great career and did it on their own terms. It was fun to watch that period though, actually went Eddie's high school (San Dieguito in Encinitas CA) and had his same government teacher who did in fact confirm he hardly spoke while Jeremy was blasting hourly on MTV lol.
Dynamic Pricing is scalping. Seat prices should be set. You shouldnt walk in a store, request something, then the store owner...stands there saying...well how much are you willing to pay. 'Dynamic pricing' should be outlawed.
Live Nation/Ticketmaster is being sued by the US government. Monopolies are illegal.
No, scalping is Ticketmaster tickets going on sale say at 10:00AM and at 10:01, seeing that most tickets are already on their resale site. Dynamic pricing…well…that is a whole different racket.
"I'm terribly sorry sir, but 12 other people have ordered the cheese burger today, so your cheese burger is going to be $148.50."
@@nsalas02 ,
“Verified resale” tickets are legalized scalping.
Why is 8 tickets the maximum number of tickets sold at one time, to one person? (Who needs more than two?)
Why can’t we buy tickets directly from the box office when the tickets go on sale?
When did monopolies become legal?
The whole system is a mess.
I won’t buy merch at an event nowadays. I go through the artists’ website.
Artists have to agree to dynamic pricing, so they're not innocent bystanders.
Tickets should have a face value and that's it.
You could be sitting right next to someone that's paid either half, or double for that seat and it's disgusting.
All the costs mentioned should be covered in the face value cost, its as simple as that.
Who sees the profit of the dynamic pricing too? The band or the ticket sellers like Ticketmaster etc?
As far as I'm aware it's ticketmaster who keep the profit
Like a plane ticket?
Can anyone tell me what a punter is?
@@leearchibald7064 no, both the artist and ticketmaster benefit. theoretically, it prevents some scalpers from benefitting.

"VIP Strap-on" quite the slip of the tongue Mr. Hawkins lol
😂
When I saw The Darkness last Oct. in Chicago, early in the day I drove the forty five miles to Chicago, had lunch with friends, hung out, then went and had dinner with another set of friends, then I went to the venue for the VIP, met the band, some really cool fans of the band, then watched the show. That whole freaking DAY cost me about as much as a Sabrina Carpenter ticket, including adult beverages at the show.
All I can say is..WOW!
I'm upset that I missed them entirely 😢
WHAT THE DARKNESS WAS ON TOUR RECENTLY?!?
That's honestly wild 😳 to believe I can't imgine the cost of these teens who want to go or anyone especially kids these pop mainstream concerts. Breaking the bank for a show is just a honest ripoff plus added expenses worth food and traveling.😐
@@deepalkessa8938 The cost of tickets today is ridiculous. I don't know how young music fans today can afford them for the big acts. I went to so many shows as a teen and in my early twenties I can't remember them all. They were cheap..$5 for a punk show, $7.50 for most moderately famous bands, and $10.00 for big deal rock stars. I was into punk at the time, so that's where my money went mostly.
I bought tickets for Led Zeppelin's show at the Chicago Stadium in 1980 for $7.50. I still have them, because John Bonham died the very day I bought tickets. The price of those tickets in today's money would be $38. Thirty eight fkn dollars. Which tells me that most bands and venues and middlemen are charging well in excess of the actual cost of the show, including paying the band. It's a money grab, in most cases. That's Capitalism, baby!
Thankfully, The Darkness has Softy to drive the bus, set-up the stage, the lighting, soundcheck, backstage security, catering, guitar teching, brushing your hair in the dressing room, costume maintenance, merchandise stand and securely releasing Frankie from his straitjacket and manacles before he presses play on the intro tape and the show can begin. To think he does all of this on less than minimum wage too. It’s why The Darkness tickets are such good value.
Poor Softy! 😂 There are a few others too...
Instead of paying $200 to see one act, go to small venues, where you can pay $20/show and see 10 different shows. You can even meet the artists afterwards.
Yes I agree! I much prefer going to small venues, and watching new bands
Absolutely. There is so much good talent out there.
I agree and disagree, I love small shows, I'll never forget the time I saw Guitar Wolf in a tiny bar, but I also want musicians who make music I utterly love to be floating around on pool chairs getting blazed on some tropical island so I'll go pay for those big shows when I can they're awesome, but I'll also go to the small shows and buy a their merch if I can
I just saw the Commoners, there was about 50 people in the audience, and the band rocked. Paid £18 felt like I was robbing them, so I bought a t shirt and felt less guilty lol. I love seeing bands/artists in small venues. Pearl Jam tried to overcharge recently and then had to cancel shows. The power lies with the consumer at the end of the day. There is so much up and coming talent out there, it's great to support that.
@@chrisgifford3888 That's awesome! The Commoners are great, and bands like them make more money from that t-shirt you bought than they will ever make from streaming. Way to go!
I appreciated your affordable ticket prices last two times I saw you guys. Hope you and yours are doing well. Thrilled to hear you have a new album coming out soon OMG so excited for it!
I'm a big fan on the editing on this video - the monkey, the old buses, the 1970s school dinner. Glorious stuff!
As an oldie I went to the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970 and camped for 3 days for 3 UK pounds. Check out the line up over those last 3 days & weep!
Holy hell, I’m old and I was one year old in 1970. Good job staying alive.
I regularly cry when I look at my first festival ticket. £7.50, no booking fee, for Saturday 11th August 1979 at Knebworth. Quite a well known bunch of lads headlining (lets just say Ronnie Wood and Keith Richard were in the main support slot).
And Hawkwind played for free outside the gates!
The cost of streaming.. wasn't it better to just pay a tenner for a CD then everyone could afford to go to a show and even get a tshirt but now they need to squeeze every penny out of that stuff
Indeed. I think there needs to be a middle-ground. For instance, I use Spotify, but I listen to maybe 10 albums quite regularly. Why not let me buy those albumns, so I can enjoy them ad-free and give the artist their fair share? It would be win-win, I get to own the albumns, and can listen to them ad-free and offline, and the artist gets paid properly. Or at least more than they're getting now, which is nowt. I'd rather that than paying the Spotify subscription, which I'm sure mostly goes to Spotify.
Few CDs were actually £10, more like £13-18. That'd be more like £30-40 nowadays.
Living in an insignificant third world country, I’ve made my peace with knowing that big shows aren’t coming here anytime near their prime, and that’s fine, I still want to give something back in recognition of their talent and how much better they’ve made my life. So I’ve opted to contribute directly by purchasing merch through the official channels. I reckon the split for the band is fairer that way than the nickels the greedy streaming tech giants see fit throwing at them.
Which "insignificant third world country" are you referring to,Australia?
@@mjh5437 Oh no not at all, I mean I don't know how Australia's concert woes go, but I think they're doing pretty solid on all other fronts. I'm from Costa Rica, nobody comes here to put on a show, they do come to put on some sunscreen and vacation, which is nice for them too.
@@mjh5437😂 I’m from Australia and this is on point… unfortunately
It is LiveNation and Ticketmaster who are getting richer from this. Not the artists, because a fee has been agreed upon in advance.
Which is already amply covered by the basic ticket prices. By then making the ticket prices dynamic, a nice bonus disappears into the pockets of LN & TM.
(Not the artist, because a fee has been agreed upon in advance!) The artist only gets a bad name because of this, because the average spectator assumes that the artists decide all that.
That's so true! Thirty-five years ago, I worked at *"TicketBastard"* - as we called it - in the phone room, selling tickets, for 6 years. I hated the service charges then (which only got worse), and could barely afford to go to big-name concerts - and I was a musician myself. It was a _"soul-sucking," non-creative job_ that helped pay the bills when I wasn't gigging, which had the _flexibility_ to take time off for gigs or tours (in bars and concert halls). A lot of musicians, actors and other creative types worked the phones back then, along with unskilled folks.
We could *buy 2 tickets* (max) for most shows, internally, but we paid full price (minus service fees) and never got top-notch seats (to prevent scalping, with an _instant firing_ if caught), so I mainly bought tickets for reserved or standing-room, general admission shows at concert halls, avoiding stadiums. I haven't gone to a big show since seeing The The at a large concert hall about 5 years ago. They were as fantastic as they were 30 years ago - and I've discovered many great bands and artists since then, but still don't like massive arena or stadium shows. I prefer *quality* over *quantity.*
“It’s called the blues. Get over it.” 🤣
He's being a brat. 😉
I'm a blues, jazz and rock singer.
When I bought my tickets for Queen last year, because the seats were selling fast, my ticket was over double what the next original price. This was bumped up by Ticketmaster. Queen made a point of not overcharging, and to not let the tickets be able to be sold by scalpers in the states it was illegal. It's ridiculous that the outfit selling the tickets gets to fleece the consumer. I know I have been turned off. I am happy to have found the guitar phenom and singer Taj Farrant. He's paying his dues playing at smaller venues and not signing on with a record label. He's gathering more and more fans, one venue, festival, and opening for Buddy Guy a few times this summer and performed at Prince's 40th anniversary celebration of the release of Purple Rain. It's more work, but he charges $35 to $50 for his shows, and his meet and greets are $50, where he and his family actually visit with his fans. He puts on a fantastic show. I'm going to support him.
I just want to add to my original post. I just got back from Arizona and seeing 2 of Taj Farrant's shows. To say Taj is special is an understatement. When he plays you can see he is feeling every note he plays on his guitar. It's so hard to express the feelings I experienced watching this young 15 yr old playing his guitar and singing. I just know one day, he's going to be listed as one of the best. He and his family are so nice and it was a pleasure to meet and visit with each of them. Their publicist/photographer is an absolute gem, and she is so sweet. The band that backs Taj is Nathan Bryce and Loaded Dice. The three of them are seasoned musicians and all very talented. They open with their own music before performing with Taj. So it's a full show opening act and all. Nathan, Jerry, and Dylan were really nice guys, and it was great to talk to as well. Many people have made comments that Taj is a reincarnation of Stevie Ray Vaughn. I just know he has an old soul. I suggest seeing him soon before his career really takes off. He just released his first album, and it was #1 on the blues charts. Check out some of his live videos. He may be 15 but he can outplay many pros out there.
I saw a fantastic little band called The Darkness in a small venue in Winnipeg March 25th 2022. $40.00CAD !! First rate straight forward rock band for $40 bucks ? It was a killer f**ckin' show. Oh and btw, who the f**k is Sabrina Carpenter...?
I saw Green day, fallout boy, and Weezer.(And another I can't remember the name of 😬) in London 2022, a whole day, for £80 and it was awesome!
Arena shows shouldn't be much more than that.
If it's good enough for one artist to cover costs, it's good enough for another.
Tickets should have a preplanned face value, none of this dynamic horse turd
I’ve seen Jerry Cantrell for under $40USD, and Wolf Van Halen (twice) & Nita Strauss for the same.
Addit: All of these shows were in the last 3 years. I’ll add Halestorm in 2018 if we’re going back further than 2021, and Badflower, and Highly Suspect, though they’re lesser known. All were between $28-$36, before the new, unexplained fees.
Park Theatre Winnipeg!!! Who Remembers Edgefest in Canada? in 98 - Green Day, Foo Fighters... for $38.00!!! The value for the ticket prices was better in the 90's and 00's.
I saw a couple of piano players for $35 in 1994. I think their names Billy and Elton??? They were pretty good.

I can't stop picturing, Robert Smith, at a The Darkness concert.
just had the pleasure of seeing the darkness at latitude and you all killed it, best crowd interaction the whole festival and an amazing performance
You didn't even mention perhaps the most important issue, the ticket sellers themselves. In the US Ticketmaster and resellers have been proven to drive prices through the roof with the artist having little control and not sharing in much of the fees.
Neil Young and Pearl Jam tried to take the issue to US Congress, I think. They tried.
Pity there are not more ticket outlets,as mainly TM has the monopoly on selling tickets these days...incorporating other outlets ie Ticketweb, etc under their umbrella.
Often it's impossible to phone the booking offices at venues now. As, there is just an automated message to tell you tickets are only available from TM,so can't bypass them.
Am I right in saying ticketmaster sells a majority of tickets to a sister company for then to set an inflated price. That should be illegal, like insider trading
Ticketmaster is currently under investigation by the FTC. The company and their monopoly on live music will be broken up. Hopefully things return to life before Ticketmaster. $25 shows

@@mindfulofidiots6003Pearl Jam definitely could have done more to reduce the cost.

Sabrina Carpenter looks so phony - overly air- brushed, she looks plastic! Typical, run-of-the-mill pop singer. Borrring! I don't even want to hear her.

Nobody is forcing anyone to buy the tickets, if people are stupid enough to pay the high price then i dont blame them for gouging the fans.
exactly, the real culprits are the morons who buy the tickets.
Yep. What it illustrates too is that there are way too many kids and young adults who have access to too much disposable money nowadays. And whether it's high-calibre music they're paying for, well, that is debatable, but I'll say no more.
The problem is when the fan is a child, and the decision whether to pay the inflated cost is with the parent.
@@cesareferrari8056 parents should know better than a child to be fair.
I remember back in the early 2000s at some point my friends and I had started buying tickets online instead of standing in line to get them through the boxoffice and we were supersized when the $60 tickets somehow cost $112 at checkout because of all the fees and BS ticketmaster was checking on. I stopped going to most concerts unless it was someone I REALLY needed to see or I had a friend who worked with the crew and I'd be backstage anyway
Justin! A huge 10-ton thanks for running this down. Your clear-headedness is refreshing and your perspective valuable. Cheers
Another related point is what are you actually hearing for this amount of money? A recent headlining show by Dua Lupa at Glastonbury was upon analysis (see Wings of Pegasus channel) her dancing and singing over her original as-recorded songs played over the PA. At least she did sing but it was somewhat lost in the mix of studio recorded multi-layered vocals.
This increasingly constitutes a "live performance" now it seems. How much is this worth paying to see?
Good points. The Wings of Pegasus channel provides such a useful service to those of us who value authenticity and good musicianship. Imagine paying $350 to go and listen to pre-recorded stuff, not to mention the autotuning when the singer does actually sing. Then again, millions of fans of today's stars disagree. Do they even care? Maybe it's all about the choreography and special effects to them. The songs are just supplemental.
Nothing. It's worth nothing. And in 20 years she'll be forgotten.
The ticket companies have started using Dynamic Pricing as they claim it is to stop botts and touts. Yes they do need to be stopped but then they just end up ripping of genuine fans. I have a cut off price for tickets of about £75 and generally I can always find tickets.
Also your Warwick Castle gig was awesome.
Thanks to getting priced out of the “big corporate music” shows, I’ve been thrilled to discover a plethora of underappreciated talent at smaller local venues who are happy to share their music for a reasonable price.
I have that same Hendrix poster. Took a tour of the Marshall factory and actually got Jim to sign it. Cheers!

Play Mountain, Purple, Zepp, Montrose, Pie, Sabbath, The Who, etc. Loud, not note for note, just like all the bands did back then. Fun.
Fair play to ELO. Who have tickets on sale for about $60 for their farewell tour.
Can’t wait till they announce the UK dates.
Actually saw the Cure last summer. One of the best sounding concerts I've been to. Also didn't get gouged, thanks Robert. Two generations. My 12th Cure show, my youngest seeing their first. Soaked to the bone walking to the seats, but all worth it.
Hey mate, FYI I'd been on your mailing list for years and years, even emailed a few times to beg for a tour, but never got notified of the Sydney event until it was too late. Not sure who's in charge of promos, but they need a clip round the ear! Please come again!
I'm a big live music fan & go to shows whenever I can. Sadly, with the advent of dynamic pricing, all too often I just can't afford to go to the bigger events or can only get seats at the back of the arena.
MUSE tickets on the pre-sale £320 (milk those fans). Ten days later £160 for the same tickets. I did get a £160 ticket (ouch) but listening to what the guy sat next me said, he'd paid the full £320
Scorpions this year was £121, but the seat in front of mine was £334 (they called it "Platinum" but it's dynamic pricing)
Nerina Pallot at The Palladium was £46, but 3 rows in front of me "Platinum" £175 (to be fair to Nerina she told fans to buy direct from the venue when she heard what Ticketmaster were charging)
Def Leppard & Motley Crew - one of the top grossing tours in 2022 ($173 million from 35 shows)
To get a good seat you had to go Platinum/VIP and for Def Leppard the front few rows were £1719 - you got to have your picture taken with the band
Motley Crew VIP was £419 - you just got a mediocre seat & a merch voucher for that, no photo opp.
I didn't get tickets for that tour. Shame really, as Def Leppard were a favourite growing up, now I just think of them as greedy assholes
What does all this mean to music fans? Rich folks at the front, poor folks at the back, or just priced out of the bigger shows altogether?
Note: Ticketmaster is a wholly owned subsidiary of Live Nation = MONOPOLY

I saw Frankie after a show where I brought my two little boys with me and he asked if they had discounted children’s tickets and was surprised they charged full price for kids ❤the boys are 100% darkness fans so we pay the 100% ticket price for a great show!
I'm suprised you haven't covered Chappel Roan yet Justin. Not only has Sabrina Carpenter raved about her and done a laid back Countryish cover of her viral hit Good Luck Babe, but the song itself, which isn't on her debut album, has a falsetto you'd enjoy and despite there not being a video, there is live performance on Jimmy Fallon's show that has a strong theatrical element you'd appreciate. You can get that from her other drag influenced/fempop performances, like the Tiny Desk Concert or her other music videos. The songwriting, production, personality, her being celebratorly queer and that she mixes glitzy made up to nines, with social media videos of her unmade up and natural, has all helped make her a sure fire hit arty pop star.
NO WAY YOU TURNED UP ON MY FYP. I do believe in a thing called algorithms but more than that - I believe In a thing called love!!!
I think what gets everyone's goat is the price rising through the sale period. Surely with the application of some mathematics bands can work out - How much will putting on the show cost us ? How much do we want to make? How many tickets and at what price do we need to sell them to make that profit. Mainly let the punters know "this will be the top price for the tickets but if you buy them early you can get x discount (allowing that the average sale price must bring the profit you need from the show". Yes oversimplified a bit / lot but that's the essence, Oh and resale siites - well.
Some of these concert prices are ridiculous
Went to see two concerts this year. One was at a smaller venue, the other was an amphitheater that seated 14k. Tickets were double for the latter, and we had orchestra seating. The VIP experiences for both were, naturally, much higher. But unexpectedly high? Nope.
Surely when someone goes on tour, the ticket prices set per venue *prior* to any "dynamic pricing" includes all the costs - the setup, the visiting the location, the stage, handlers, catering, everything... *and* a modest/decent/fabulous profit (delete for most appropriate). Surely artists aren't organising a tour and going "well, lets set the price so low we lose money and reply on peak demand to generate a profit". Or are they?
Next up, Tesco to include dynamic pricing based on how busy the store is. Or MacDonalds. Or the Electricity company... oh wait. Economy 7. Wait, no, they scrapped it.
Should say, saw Rammstein for 120, fire zone, epic stage show obviously - incredible, worth every penny and more. So if people have a thrilling time, its up to you to decide if it's value at whatever price you pay :)
Please tour the new album in the US!
And Canada - specifically Toronto.
British rock news of the week must be the Good Vibes Festival organiser suing The 1975 pop rock band for $2.4 million in the UK high courts. 1975 are being accused of drinking alcohol, being drunken, smoking cigarettes, excessively spitting, using profanities and damaging a drone camera while performing their set. Given The 1975 were paid $350 000 to perform this could prove to be a very hefty dent to the performers' kitty, especially given how expensive the UK high court system is nowadays.
lmao last year or the year before she played the 3Olympia in Dublin (a relatively small venue) for like 1/3rd the price they're charging for her in the 3Arena Dublin (our largest fully indoor venue) now
New album coming from The Darkness? I can't wait! I remember when the first album came out. I bought the CD and I've been a fan ever since.
What i have experienced is that the original price for a ticket is called "standard ticket". People or companies purchase many tickets then sell them back to ticketmaster or wherever. Then they become "ultimate" or some other new description. There was a time when artists would tell fans when purchasing music, only pay x dolars. This needs to be done again but with tickets
I think what puts it into perspective is Rammstein's recent tour. That was one massive production to take all round Europe, required days to build, and existed in duplicate. Ticket prices were around £100-150, and there is no way any of these big name pop stars have a show that labour intensive, so no excuse for charging so much more
Such a valid point that I’d not really considered, about the streaming services and what not. I’ve also always said, if every ticket’s been sold, the price is right.
Justin Hawkins you sir are a legend xx
You hit the nail squarely on the head when you discussed the cost of providing such a spectacle. However, I'm pretty sure there is also an element of greed on the part of promoters. For me, the scale of the spectacle detracts from the music, (even rock music,) so I don't go to those sort of gigs. The biggest I would contemplate is a traditional 1500 seat hall or theatre, (and the last one of those I went to was the Bonzos 40th anniversary tour.)
Of couse the phenomenon is not new. Joe Cocker scaled back his touring machine in the '70s after a world tour, (circa 1973 I think,) which required two Boeing 747s: one for equipment and one for personnel. Apparently, he looked down the length of the cabin and asked, "What do all these people do?" :D
Hello Justin, I just wanted to ask a question for a future show... I was at Latitude and your set was utterly brilliant! It was very cool seeing you on home turf and my kids absolutely loved it! My question, could you talk me through the excellent trousers that you wore at Latitude. I couldn't make out all the details but the wind turbines were incredible 🥰 thanks x
Tours used to be to promote new albums. Artists and bands made their living off record sales not live shows. With streaming, now they don't. The public got cheaper access to lots of music and now they take that for granted. All costs have gone up astronomically - inflation and crazy insurance premium hikes have hit everything. A young artist may only have brief success and need to make a living that lasts a while. I bet the money people have saved in streaming equals a few reasonably priced gig tickets a year. I wouldn't pay that sort of money to watch a screen from the back of an arena. I think the "Enormo-Dome" shows may die out and we will see a return to more smaller shows with more affordable tickets.
I'm sick of ads during my music or paying subscriptions. I have subscription fatigue, and I'm sure many others do too. I think there will be a move back to buying albums. People want to own music and support their favourite artists, and not just pay a subscription, most of which goes to Spotify Corp, and the rest to the top manufactured pop acts.
You crack me up 😂. Looking forward to your next gig
“It’s called the blues get over it” 😂 classic JHRA line. Love it
Charge what it can sell for I guess, right? I have a bigger problem with the fees and crap that seem unavoidable
First Light Festival in Lowestoft is free!! Be great to see The Darkness there....
It all goes back to the silty sewage. A business measures three vectors for how it should operate: Demand for product, pricing for product, how long the product can be sold/is valuable. Blonde lady has been famous for five business days (a credible estimation), and will enjoy this success for perhaps five more business days. Gotta jack up the price. Alternately, 1) The people demand The Darkness and the product has a lifetime guarantee. 2) Price so all the Darklings can go every time. 3) Profit.
4)Tour the smaller towns, too. San Diego is just as fun as LA, probably more so, with all of the nightlife near the harbor.
@@botchick her fans have been watching her on TV for over ten years, so the five business days thing doesn't stand up.
Why can't we have a conversation about tickets prices without insulting other people's taste in music?
Hi Justin. Saw you on Saturday at camp bestival. A good friend of mine from aus came over to see me and we were there on Saturday. He's seen you in aus and I've seen you here. Salisbury years ago. We love to see you together and rock with you for an hour. Everything was a OK 👍cheers mate 😊
Having just seen the 6 piece band Rammstein and their absolutely insane stage setup live recently for a third of a Sabrina carpenter ticket price, I don't think the "touring costs money" argument is really that valid
If they find enough people to pay the amount, it'll continue that way. Once people start staying away, the prices will come down, since it's just so much fun to have packed rooms with people who're enjoying the music instead of thinking about how much it cost.
This 72 yr old rocker, who has seen them all- Zep, D Purp, Bowie, Allmans, Petty, Bruce, Metallica, etc etc.
I saw the best band in my life last year- Band Maid, for $30 in a small venue.
If no one paid these prices, problem soved.
The problem with ticket prices is on the backend and the tons of ticket brokers who buy up tickets then charge double.
Not just a problem for the music industry, even Silverstone F1 was using dynamic pricing, prices were going up between ticking the box for number of tickets and actual checkout! If I can't go direct to the venue website and purchase tickets I don't go.
Justin, tell us about your gear man! Need a Darkness rig rundown and what your personal favs are.
My friend went to see the Darkness in 2004/5 in Newcastle. He paid £50. I felt that was excessive at the time for what I deemed to be a gimmick band with one hit single (maybe two 🤷🏻♂️). According to the web, that’s £100 in today’s money.
It’s a sellers market. Caveat Emptor.
Not against the fee, make it when you can but it does seem excessive.
Great show at Latitude last Sunday , wish you lot were headlining ! .
Ticket sales have been escalating for some time , its supply and demand and to some extent I don't see a problem with it .Bands now realise that to make big money they need to perform live more often, that can only be a good thing no ?. We live in a streaming world that didn't exist when I was a kid , if you wanted a CD it cost nearly £15 in Andy's records or you borrowed your mates and made a dodgy tape copy. Incidentally I only used to earn about £35 a week when I was 17 . I wouldn't trade that for a second . The freedom and flexibility we have now is incredible. In my opinion we must accept the trade off. Trust me , some people don't know how lucky they are. Apart from a few exceptions you can listen to virtually any album or artist instantly , often for free.
I think that live shows have increased the price very much and too much in some shows. I understand that bring a light, sound, music show must be so expensive. But every time is more difficult to go to a live show because sometimes prices are imposible!
I covered one of her songs live, called 'Thumbs'. At the time I didn't know anything about her, I just liked the song. I think things changed after she opened for Taylor Swift on parts of her tour.
Frankly, if an artist has what it takes to perform at a small club, it's not only more personal but cheaper. Point being, aside from the obvious visual aspect, what would Ms. Carpenter bring to a club gig?
I wanted to go to Acdc in Dublin Ireland. And for a basis ticket it was £175 per ticket.
Support your local music scene. Problem(s) solved.
When I was a teenager, living on Merseyside going to a concert in Liverpool to see Adam and the Ants, OMD, Joy Division, Buzzcocks ,The Damned , Tears for Fears Motorhead...etc or going to watch LFC was just something you did.It never cost more than a fiver and the whole night never more than a tenner and either i was able to save up to go or i could cadge some extra money from my parents or promise to do some menial job.
Whatever, it was always doable, without too much sacrifice.
I guess the real expense was in buying records with concerts subsided.
Whereas today you can listen to music ,play videos on your favourite band or sports team on demand for free.
Consequently today I would never pay to go to a concert but watch or listen for free instead on UA-cam.
However, now I look back and wish instead of buying records I had gone to more concerts instead.
Just as well that they haven't introduced conscription to force you to go to a concert. Watching You Tube videos & local pub bands instead is always an option. 😊😊😊😊
In February 1974, I saw Uriah Heep, Rory Gallagher and Manfred Mann at the san Diego Sports Arena and ticket prices were $6:00 (US) day of the show and $5:25 in advance, according to a concert poster found on the Internet. Also according to the Internet, the Chevy Camaro sold new in 1974 from $2,827.00 for the six cylinder to $3, 380.00 (US) for the Camaro LT Luxury Coup. Also from the Worldly Pipe, $6 in 1974 is worth $38.24 in 2024. I have no idea how accurate these figures are other than what the 1974 ticket prices were but these are some numbers to crunch. Personally, I'm all for the artist and their crew making a very good living plus the venue making a fair profit.
The larger venues near my city are now charging up to $40-50 to use their parking lot to see a show that you’ve already spent a couple hundred dollars on. That’s basically the equivalent of Walmart charging you to park in their lot so you can shop in their store.
When i first recieved a suggestion to watch a JHRA video i thought "who is this pompous ass?". I watched a couple of videos and thought, "seriously, who is this guy? ". I looked him up and was mildly impressed but why do i care what he has to say? I watched a few more and was hooked. Then i saw the one with the charismatic voice and somehow it was the most entertaining thing is seen on UA-cam in a while.
Now I'm going back and watching everything.
Steely Dan and the eagles in New Orleans for 400 yikes
Fortunately most modern (post-2000s) rock/metal bands have pretty low ticket prices. I don't know how it looks in USA but when I convert prices in my country to dollars then Slipknot, Korn and other popular bands are like 80-100 dollars.
My biggest gripe around ticket prices is that people will pay upwards of £50 to go see an act, but will refuse to pay literally £3 to see three or more small independent bands. The disparity between established bands and up and coming bands is actually insane. No wonder hardly any working class people can afford to pursue music
If “the public” think the artist or management control this, then they need wake up. It’s ticketmaster and their monopoly of other smaller ticket companies that up the price when tickets start selling fast as “premium”. It’s wrong. Artists do need to speak up on ticketmaster for doing this with prices after sale begins
The US DOJ is suing them. Our petition made it.
@@SuziQ. the only winner will be what makes the most money in taxation… eg the people/masses won’t beat the corporations
@@soapboxparishrecordings5287 ,
The artists can limit ticket sales (who needs 8 tickets?).
We do have laws against monopolies. Those “verified resale” tickets are the scalpers. They pay the tax on a $40 ticket, and immediately price it at $280 (or more). I’ve never purchased one of those. Is the higher priced ticket taxed again, at its new, inflated price? I believe it’s illegal to double tax anything.
@@SuziQ. sounds like American sucks. Resale is actually cheaper here. Example green day tickets were £100 at time of sale (some went up to £200 on premium nonsense from ticketmaster 20 mins after sale). But then checking a few days before the gig on resale and they were being sold for 75-£85
that bottom string always messes me up on a Uke!
A fave band, The Osees, charged $30 for a concert ticket.....place was packed and the show was incredible. You don't have to pay a lot to see incredible performances. Then again, expensive ticket prices are like that old axiom "why does a dog lick it's bawlz? - Because it can"
Tune it an octave down, it ain't against no law 🎶🎵👍🤣
Actually Louis Tomlinson was the first to do his own festival, after Covid, for free. Noe an annual event, different country each year. He manages to keep the ticket prices down. Probably where Yungblud got the idea from…a couple of Doncaster lads leading the way. Louis is a gem.
I remember first time I heard the darkness. Loved em. 2003. A classmate said “you need to listen to these guys!”
was he called "justin" by any chance? 😄
Another person that capped their ticket prices is Garth Brooks. Front Row and Back row are the exact same prices when he toured the last two years. I've been going to concerts since I was 10. I am now 44. I get supply and demand, as well as the cost to get on the road. What is hard to swallow for those of us that love the live experience are the legacy bands, the bands we grew up with, we are now priced out of seeing them perhaps that "one last time" because of this type of pricing. It's very disheartening. I want to support the artists I love, I just have a hard time paying over $100 for nose bleeds. Will it ever get fixed? Probably not. Not with the cost of touring. I do agree with many of you who have mentioned dynamic pricing in other aspects of life, if it was such, there would be an uprising.
