I prefer players like Ibrahimovic who have received racist insults throughout their career (insults that everyone could hear even while watching the match on TV!) without ever making clown acts like that little princess Maignan.

The fact that the commentary team said ‘hopefully Maignan can listen to reason’. This is insulting to Maignan and every black player. He is the voice of reason. Close the stadium to fans for a few games. Happens again, close it for more time. Again, Whole season. The club will very quickly find and remove these people if they don't get ticket sales for increasing lengths of time.
Closing stadium won't happen, too much money will be lost. The solution is more security in the rows of the stadium. Undercover cops to book people & ban them from games. ID checking system so someone cannot buy a racist person a ticket who's been kicked out of a game. Fifa is turning blind eye bc they know it's been going on for decades they don't care.

This always happens in italian football every once in a while. They are just not serious about fighting racism. They will just tell the player to ignore and carry on playing. They dont like it when the black players decide to stop the game and walk off.

Can those "fans" be held accountable or even better banned from future matches? Without consequences this will keep happening, the world is full of these ignorant people.
Part of the problem is that its really hard to make fans personally responsible for things said and done at the stadium or outside the stasium. They all tend to hide in the crowd and tell everyone how innocent they are.
Clubs on the other hand are usually punished. But while some clubs doesnt care about their fans behaviour, most are pretty powerless to stop their fans bad behaviour. And those kinds of fans usually dont care if the club they proclaim to love is being punished either.
If we are going to get to the bottom of it I think the only way to do it is to hold fans accountable for their behaviour. Especially financially and socially. Being a racist asshat isnt as funny when your face is plastered over the news and you have a hefty fine on the way.

Another issue is playing in different countries. Some countries such as the U.S. take a stand against racism wherever they can whereas others such as Bulgaria do not, just watch how raheem sterling was treated there. When you play in another country you live under their rules whether you like it or not and there is not much Uefa can really do about it. Freedom of speech, they can say what they want despite how hurtful it might be. Uefa banning fans for using words opposes freedom of speech. (I personally think action should be taken here fyi). Uefa choosing to ban certain countries from competition excludes so many people from football because of the actions of others and goes against the very inclusivity the "no to racism" is trying to promote, which is that everyone should be able to play and enjoy football. It's one of those situations where on paper the solution seems obvious but in practice and after a lot of critical thinking it becomes an incredibly difficult issue to deal with.
In some cases they did get banned. At least i know last season some juventus "fans" are banned for life because racist chant.

Racial harassment/abuse is not stupidity. It’s an endemic within the theaters of football, and people need to be held accountable for these criminal offenses. The chairpeople of the league need to find a solution to make the stadiums a safer place for players to entertain the world. My heart goes out to Mike Maignan and the all the players in the field who had to endure this horrendous act of racial harassment.

Finally, officials actually dealing with racist abuse properly from the crowds. Far too often they just play on and show little sympathy to the victim of the abuse.
