This lens is beautiful! I'm on the hunt for one just like it. I have the 50 and 100mm Macro and both lenses just kill it for me.

Sir, with this review I made up my mind to add one of those Takumars to my collection of lenses. I am missing the 85mm focal length. I think it will stay proudly even next to modern RF lenses. Thank you sir and God bless.

Jim Durfee, I just luuurve this laid back, slow talkin' video you've presented here.
And here's the weird thing. This morning I decided to look at the best 85mm lens for my Canon 70D and Sigma came tops but at a price.
Then I suddenly thought "Hang on a mo, I'm sure I've got a Takuma 85mm amongst my vintage collection. And there it was, on my Fujica SLR., the S-M-C Takuma 1.8 85mm.
So just out of interest, did a Google check to see value and reviews etc and found your video showing same model you've just bought
Now it's off the Fujica and onto my Canon with Foto Diox adaptor and I'm off to try it out later this morning and probably save myself ape ding £600.00 plus on a new one.
So thank you for a great confirmation on another of my Takumar collection

Nice video, great lens. The photos look nice. I bet it's a great lens for portraits. I bought a Neewer Multi-Coated 85mm f/1.8 for a little less than $100 from Amazon for my ASP-C E-mount camera using the Nikon->NEX adapter. It's not as sharp as yours, but it's fine for portraits.

Thanks for the comment. I'm gonna do the portrait test with this lens next weekend when my daughter comes over (if she'll let me! lol).
I've never heard of the Neewer 85mm lens.....I do know one thing for certain though, you can get great shots with about any lens or camera once ya figure out your equipment's limitations and ultimate sweet spots ;)

That lens is quite radioactive and uses a thoriated element in the front optical group - nothing in life comes for free.

How's the chromatic aberration @ 1.8?, what do you think of the 50 1.4 and the 55 1.8 taks?

    • @JimDurfee
      @JimDurfee  6 років тому +1

I'm getting some purple fringing shooting in harsh light with this lens but have been able to clean that up in Lightroom. The other 2 Taks you mention I have and they are pretty good lenses, I like the 50mm f/1.4 better than the 55mm for sure, it's a little sharper.

Hello Jim, Thank you for wonderful video and lovely pictures. Is your lens 5element/4 group 5/4? As Mark says there is no another version of this lens. Many thanks again

Yes it is, it's an awesome lens, I use it all the time, it's actually on my Pentax K1 right now ;)

@@JimDurfee Hello Jim, I am happy. I received my 85 1.8 and my Super Takumar 50 1.4 8 Element. Also the SMC Takumar 135 2.5 6 element but it does have a problem with mount. Looks somehow distorted and can not be mounted either on a pentax or on other adapters. We managed to put a classic canon adapter on, but 1. the AUTO SWITCH does not move because the very small pin looks like is stuck. When the big pin goes down is only then that the aperture blades open and close. So how can I glue the pin down. Is there anything else I can do with this lens or shall I return it when I am back in Europe. I am in china at the moment and I do not have time for that. Optics are clean. And I did get the lens a a considerable price. It is actually very weared how come the seller did not see that there was a problem with the mount. I will tell you why. The rear lid was absolutely stack. I could not take it off. And I had to warm the lid with my hair dryer for a second, after I covered the lens, and I managed to remove the lid and then saw that there was a problem with the mount and with the very little pin. So, Please give me your advise.

@@FLORAMORAITINI sounds like the 135mm is the Bayonet type with K-Mount and you are trying the wrong version adapter....I wouldn't know though for sure without looking at it.

@@JimDurfee Thank you very much for reply. Specialists who saw the lens said the mound is distorted. It Can not mount not even on a pentax camera. After long trying they found a canon adapter that worked but it was the one without the extension step to keep the big pin down so that the aperture would work. So they had to stick the pin with tape and then the aperture worked fine. Probably this is the way to go around it if I am to keep it. The seller has accepted the return but as I am leaving china tomorrow I do not have time to return it. I take it with me in europe and I will see from there what its future will hold. Thank you very much Jim Durfee. Let's hope a solution will be found

Great video! Do you know if the 85mm Takumar is radioactive like some of the 50mm’s?

85mm doesn't have the thorium elements (safe) ;)
