I really respect you buddy you make me really want to live. When my daughter passed away in 2019 I was a mess I still feel this way but when I watch and listen to the things you be saying it brightens my heart . So I don't no you but I love you because I'm changing day by day because of you. Thank you !!!😊
Thanks for sharing this, Pete. It makes me feel better to see that other people have gone through the same thing I'm going through now. My wife and I are slowly but surely building our farm dream and will be leaving corporate America in the near future hopefully - we're both corporate recruiters dealing with the usual corporate politics, which we feel like has been escalated this year due to COVID.
UPDATE: I thought it would be cool to provide an update now that it's been about 2 years since I posted this. We have started our farm! Last year was our start-up year and we had no sales but we're poised to have a fair amount of sales this year. My wife still works full-time and I have dropped down to part-time to focus more on building the farm. There will come a time when my wife and I are both full-time on the farm and I can't wait!

After reading Joel Salitin's books, last year I started growing 50 Cornish Cross (C monsters) and 4 turkeys. This year I doubled it and included two pigs in a pig port at my 1 acre home with a garden.....

"Your are your worst critic." I was told this and when I stopped holding myself back I got to work. It's been three years of hard work, and more to go. Working to build equity in what I have, so when the right farmstead comes up for sale we can make the move. For now we life in town, building up and saving for the day we can launch into out own farmstead.
It will happen. Be patient. I believe in you!

First of all, I want to say thank you for this wonderful episode that you filmed. It was enjoyable to listen to what you had to say about following your heart, your dreams, to make your life and your family‘s lives better. Your comment about speeding up the weekdays and slowing down the weekend is something I live through for many years also. I was never able to describe it as well as you, but certainly felt it each and every week. I did make a change when I was 58 years old, not a particularly well received idea by family and friends, but I have been richly rewarded and very happy for the difficult decision I had to make. Your comments were very meaningful to me.

Hi Pete, Well I did it. Actually we did it. My wife Carolyn and I owned a small air conditioning business in south Florida. We just recently sold the the business and are moving to the Ocala area where we own 5 acres. Although I’m sure we will never raise beef cattle we are both looking forward to having a large garden and raising some chickens for both meat and eggs. My parents always had a garden that took up have of our back yard and all of the side yard when I was growing up. At one point we raised guinea hens from a couple eggs my dad found when putting in a power line (he was a lineman for the power company). Anyway we can’t wait to get out of this concrete jungle, the phone not ringing 24/7 because someone’s AC unit is broken. With a little more time on our hands we are looking forward to getting up to the market to see you someday. You and your videos have helped to keep us going these last few years. I know what your talking about. I recently walked out of my job ad never looked back. I was working corrections in segregation. Too much upper management bs going on and I got tired of it. A voice in my head said to leave and don'tlook back. I did exactly that and later that day I literally felt better physically and mentally. Am waiting on a few leads which I hope will be a hire very soon. Who knows, might end up in the country on our family land, work at tractor supply and enjoy life!

I built a stage production company from the ground up starting in 2006. While it made me into a successful businessman I worked constantly without a day off for 13 years. I hated it. I sold the company in 2019 and went back to being a performing musician and music producer. I earn half of what I did before but I work 10 hours a week with almost no stress doing what I love. It’s the best decision I ever made. I also now have time to help out for a few hours each week on the dairy farm I worked on as a kid! Couldn’t be happier!
I got scapegoated out of an IT job 12 years ago, It was probably the happiest day of my life. Had no interest in seeking another job in the field. It was great when I got into it in 1999, but the field had changed dramatically in the following years. I was miserable and it showed. For a few months I didn't know what to do. I ended up buying and running a portable sawmill. (Woodmizer, the original and the best) I actually looked forward to going on milling jobs. The clients were great people, and looking at a stack of lumber gave my life the meaning I had been lacking. Someone could make an heirloom piece of furniture with that lumber (many did and sent photos years later). So much more fulfilling than working with computers and software that was obsolete in 5 years, and dealing with the corporate environment.
Hey Pete - two things: 1. Have you read Longitude by Dava Sobel? A must read for a ‘clock guy’! 2. My wife and I are about are about 3-years behind you & Hillary and following a similar path...both no longer inspired by our corporate jobs and we bought a family farm with 200 year old house that we’ve been renovating for the past 2-years - in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. We already have layers and will be getting our first Berkshires this summer. Your channel has been extremely helpful!

Neat story. You have done what you wanted. If one is not happy one should change. I have always found my work to be fun and looked forward to going to work every day. At 50 I was retired due to down turn. Long story short after 6 months I started a company. It did well and I had fun again. At the same time we bought 3 quarters grain farm (160 acres per quarter) neat stuff; but I had no idea how to farm. We lease the land and it provides 1/4 of our income. I deal with the people that lease it and I can see they are no different than you. They are always managing costs, crops and equipment. Success is based on how you feel not no how much you make. With a gain farm you get to take time off some times as there are no animals to feed.

Weeks ago. and can't continue my seafarer career. Now all i want is to have a farm and live it all my life.
This speaks to both of us. I was a ski coach that spent most of his time traveling for work, a good portion international and my wife is an RN. I know that feeling in your chest of not looking forward to going off to work despite it being a great line of work. We had 2 little ones and I wanted be around them more. Now we have three, 1, 5, and 6 and moved back to our homeland in northern Michigan with the goal of simplifying, raising kids on a farm and reaching them self sufficiency and an appreciation for the the outdoors. It’s been tough as real estate around here is not very affordable, especially for farmland. We finally found a good suitable farm and beginning this journey later this month. Our plan is to do as much of our food as possible but our dream us to do basically what you are doing though I don’t think our acreage will jive with cattle. Pigs and chickens, pasture raised plus a few fruit crops. Anyway, this video really speaks to us and as a 45 year old guy it’s pretty similar to where you were when you dove in. Thanks again for these video resources and insights Pete. My wife and I have been watching them the past few days in our spare time.

I'm 60 and permantly disabled and trying to fullfill my small farm dream to Just everything is much slower and have to think my way through things due to my various disabilities.
So proud of you. The good news is, we are able to define what “farming” means to us. It may be a few chickens and a garden or it may be 100 head of cattle. But if what you’re doing allows you to be more self sustainable then you are farming! I pray for your success!
One of the best videos I've seen in awhile.
I Sold my construction business in Virginia back in 2007 and paid off close to $750,000 in debt and bought a foreclosed farm in Maine held by the VA for $30,000. The Farm started in 1799 when the house was built and the farm was in operation until the 1950's when it turned into a rental property. I've been trying to clear the overgrowth back on 20 acres of it and also continually building greenhouses for tomato and pepper production and also to start a Aquaculture operation to raise Trout for restaurant sales and smoked trout sales in store check out snack displays. It's very hard making that transition and really scary at some points. Especially when you burn the bridge to your only other source of income. What you have accomplished with your family is amazing and reminiscent to the original American dream where you build something productive from little or nothing.

My partner and I are at about the same point (age-, career-, and dream-wise) as you and your wife were when you started the farm, so it's great to watch your videos and see where we could be in another dozen years. Great job, Pete. Love your videos. I am so happy for you and your family. My husband and I are working towards this with cattle. We are starting rotational grazing practices and selling direct to customers. Starting small - 2 beef calves last year, 4 this year. Someday I hope 30 plus.

Pete. Thanks for sharing all your experience. I am in much the same situation as you were. I have been small scale farming and working off farm for nearly 25yrs and working towards the goal of doing it full time. It quite interesting that Joel books also inspired me however it also got me following the ecological model and not the industrial. Hi Pete, it is always great to watch your videos! Last year I turned 44, tired of burocracy at work, I resigned. This year my husband, two children and I moved to a small holding and bought our first dexter cows. After watching your videos we will start farming with chickens as well. I stumbled across this video and have a similar story as I went back to the ranch in New Mexico after Navy service and being in the corporate world for 30+ years .I'm an old man now and can't be the cowboy I was when i was younger, but I am so happy right now words can't describe it. I have to be careful with words as I might start bawling !!!

Hi Pete, I just recently found your channel and love your video’s about the dexter cows 🐮 This to is a very inspiring video. I definitely have no firm shares to sale but me too am in the middle of finishing my last projects and starting up our small family farm. People say I have a wonderful job traveling a lot but in the end it just means you are never at home. After 30 years Of being out and on the road I’m tired of it and want to stay home on our own property for a while. I would like to get to know my 13 yo. After all I am his dad, but sometimes feel like I don’t know him at all. Missed out already so much of his childhood. That has to finish.
As you mentioned I too think a lot of people are trapped in a life they don’t want. And yes it will be difficult in the beginning to make ends meet. But I came to the point that I realized that your well payed job is worth nothing if you can’t share your time with the ones you love.

I have been watching your Videos for a while now. I used to work for environmental consulting firms. Just like you said, I was counting days to weekend during the week. I was very depressed, didn’t know the meaning of my life. Long story short, two years ago I bought a farm and started raising sheep for a living. Maybe most of people I know wouldn’t understand my decision but I am happy almost everyday. Now I can test everything that I I know to improve the ecosystem on my farm instead of covering ass for large industrial companies. That is the reason I went to university and spent 7 years there learning.
I have this same dream. Your videos some how found me. I didn’t actually look them up. I farm hay off my small place but I don’t really make any money. Just kinda break even. These videos have pushed me to want to make more of my place. I love the ppl at my job but I hate working for a living. I have no time for me and what I want to do and more importantly I have no time for my family. Now I’m just looking for where to start. Thanks for the great videos. They are really good.

I always an interest in farming but had no land or the know how ..
luckily a farmer I went to church with called me over 1 day .
He said you always ask me so much about farming, are u interested in learning?
I told him absolutely!!!
He made a deal with me .
He let me pick out any cow he had on the farm .
We looked up fair market price & I worked under him to learn & for cost of my 1 st cow .
Long story short
I lease his farm now & have chicken, feeder pigs every year & im up to 8 cows .
I still work full time job but hope in 2 years I can buy my own farm & work from there the rest my life ..
