🐌 Assassin snail = a living vacuum!
A few months ago I set up a little Moina tank so the guppies could have a constant supply of live foods
but when I added some Amazon frogbit, I didn’t realize I would be faced with a complete ramshorn snail explosion.
I tried the “old fashion” way of removing the snails - by baiting them with cucumber and manually removing them but this was WAY too time consuming. I couldn’t keep up so I went and got 2 assassin snails (just wait until you find out why they’re called this 😎).
Assassin snails are perfect for removing unwanted pest snails in an aquarium. Once they lock their target, they use a super strong glue-like mucus on their foot (the bottom of a snail) to trap the pest snail and then the magic happens. A crazy “straw-like” organ called the retractile proboscis protrudes out and sucks out the flesh of the snail, leaving only an empty shell.
The best part about the assassin snails is they only lay one egg at a time & can’t reproduce asexually (like pest snails can) so I won’t have an assassin snail explosion once the pest snails are cleared out!

the same thing happened to my fish tank with the plants we had some random snail visitors, but luckily we have a Japanese fighting fish that seems to be able to keep numbers at bay :)

Cone snails are a carnivorous reef snail that eats fish! Their proboscis is modified to be like a venomous harpoon! Very cool, though some species are toxic enough to take out a person.
On a lighter note, a funny "slow-speed chase" is watching a carnivorous snail pursue prey like sea slugs. And also "sun stars" ploughing through other sea stars, especially the surprisingly fast but not at all nimble "brittle stars" [and their non-spiny cousins, "serpent stars"]. "Seal chasing penguin on land" is funny only when the penguin gets away (really, V sad to see it caught). But they're not mean, just doing what they do: being great [and sometimes kinda hilarious] hunters.
Tl;dr please do draw it! Also please consider sun star vs brittle stars. Video clips will reveal how great they are for drawing! GL! ✺✮ (That's a sun star and a regular sea star.)

I had the same problem once. I bought a couple of fish that eat snails as a part of their diet, and problem resolved itself within a month or so

I also had a snail issue like this. You get a few and then it overpopulates the tank. My favourite way of getting them out is to pop a cucumber in there. Next day, they’ll latch on till you can’t see the cucumber part. Just a plate of barnacle looking things.

I’ve internally introduced a bunch of rams horns into my shrimp tank to cleanup whatever the shrimp leave behind and I honestly love the little guys, they’re kinda cute! 🐌

we had a couple just suddenly appear in our old axolotl tank, and they were great for the tank! unfortunately, those axolotls died from parasites and the tank started leaking a couple months later

My brother has African land snails and I definitely prefer nerites. The eggs rarely hatch in freshwater and they can go really fast underwater! I didn't think I'd like aquatic snails, now I'm hooked lol

my sisters had "pet snails" that ended up eating all the fish in their tank. i wasnt alive then, theyre like 10 years older, but the story of them being horrified watching the snails somehow kill and eat their fish by diving from the sides of the glass is still hilarious to me
Do you know the species of that snail, or if the tank was a saltwater tank? Because i don’t think there is any freshwater snail that kills and eats fish.

This is why you need a quarantine tank for plants. Also treat the plants with copper sulphate or a copper based snail killer. Bleach is also sometimes used and alum (a type of salt) at about 3.5 tablespoons per gallon and let soak for 3-4 days before rising the plants and letting them float in clean water for a couple days to make sure the snails are gone.
If you have access to daphnia or monia, throw some in the tank with the plants and see if they die. If they do, the plants need to be rinsed again, if they live, the plants are safe to go in the tank.
You can prevent this from happening again by cleaning the duckweed before installing it :) you can do this by transferring it to a bowl of water, which will release hitchhikers (as i like to call them.). You can repeat this process as many times you want moving it from bowl to bowl until all critters are off. This is what I do whenever I get moss or duckweed for a terrarium with living creatures. This is just a recommendation have a blessed day ❤
