The 90s was probably the wild west of controller designs. Third party ones tended to go absolutely crazy trying to stand out and look different with no thought of build quality or how well they actually played games as long as they were cheaper than the official ones that's all that mattered most of the time.
Dang… the 6 button genesis controller was MY controller!!! I forgot all about that thing. I also love all things bright and translucent, & am a huge fan of the n64 controller. Great video!
I've always loved the N64 controller. I never even knew people hated it until years later. It's one of my top 5 favorite video game controllers of all time.
Unfortunately i have had nothing but trouble with the 8bitdo controllers. All the snes ones i got had incorrect button inputs with the dpad. The best snes controller i ever had was made by ascii and had the super famicom color scheme. This was a great video. I always like seeing controllers i never had.
Not only is the joystick cool but the Neo Geo AES in general has a cool look to it and design wise has withstood the test of time. It still looks very modern and doesn't scream 1990 like some consoles do.
I saw the OG Neo Geo controller getting some love but have to say that a decent quality arcade stick is crazy underrated for ergonomic comfort. You're not holding anything, bearing any weight or have any fingers wrapped around anything. Just a lever your left hand can manipulate however it suits, and big buttons that fingertips can press without any significant force. Bliss.
I remember that issue of Nintendo Power with all the third party SNES controllers. I was always intrigued by that single handed one that was just a control pad on one side and some small buttons elsewhere. Apparently you'd use that to game and the other hand to draw maps/etc in rpgs.
I think I like the SNES controller the best. My hands aren't very big, and the SNES controller feels just right for my hands. That said, I am a fan of the N64 controller as well! I actually really like it, and I'm definitely a fan of the coloured-transparent electronics like those controllers you showed.
My brothers and I would have welts on our thumbs from playing with the SNES controller (turbo controller for the SNES was the best). The N64 controller was far and away the best controller for a kid with small hands. When we got the Xbox and it came with The Duke controller (which my older brothers loved), I felt it was far too big, so I bought the s-type controller for me to use when it came out. (The Atari 2600 controller gave my hand cramps, but I never had an NES console, Wii, Gamecube, NeoGeo, CDI, 3DO, Megadrive, Mastersystem, Dreamcast, none of the Playstations, or PC controllers.)
Back then before the Wii, I imagined the N64 controller as a gun or crossbow because of the Z trigger and thinking how cool it be to include the NES Zapper technology. Two generations later Nintendo comes up with the Wii controller and nunchuck.
Nintendo, SNES , Famicon, Sega, Sega Saturn, N64, and Dreamcast. Man back in the days. I miss those controllers. I did have the watermelon see through n64 controller
Another cool thing about the Beeshu Zipper is that it originally came with an attachment that went in the d-pad to make it function as a joystick. Another cool SNES controller was made by Asciiware that had individual switches to control the turbo speed of each button. I like the NES Max but I wish it had a traditional d-pad instead of that circular one.
😂I watched Pingu when I was a kid. Totally worth buying that controller, if only to show us, but yeah Nootnoot. The NeoGeo AES one is just too cool to be true, literally: the price of the system and its games was just not even possible to think about in my house. The most famous gaming magazine back in the day here in Spain called the neogeo the rolls-royce of consoles and it stuck for our generation. it really was. Great video Erin, really enjoyed it!
I used the NES Advantage and the SNES Advantage back in the day. Those two Advantages were the best for NES and SNES. As it gave you turbo options and felt like you were at the Arcade as it had a joystick and buttons similar to arcade buttons.
Definitely need this to be an entire series about controllers. I really would love more content on this because there are so many cool and unique controllers out there. The memories we all have about controllers, how they feel in the hand and how the colors look to our eyes, it all harkens back to nostalgia and connects us knowing that everyone of us have our own unique and similar experiences with them. This could be a very important series to make, just for historical purposes alone and so much more. Let's go Erin!
ERIN! i'd like to see you do long play videos. what was the first game you beat/completed? what games can you play all the way through? what games do you play over and over? what games do you like to play when you are sick and need cheered up? do you like the Samurai Pizza Cat's? you're the best. -your buddy, James.
Knocking it out of the park again erin!!! Definitely do a part 2 sometime in the future if you can... it was really fun to here you riff about the controllers you find fascinating, and unique
There’s something about your last two videos that I have just loved. They’re all always great, but recently they’ve been so chill and casual. A real joy to watch. Way to go, Erin!!!
Switch Pro controller is great. Not only for Switch but also for PC. It’s my go-to controller for modern games on PC. For retro-style games on PC, I like to use my SNES classic controller or a gold Wii classic controller pro that came with a 007 game, if I’m not mistaken. It still holds up all these years later with no issues with any of the buttons or anything.
My top three. Third place is the NES Advantage, couldn't put it down as a kid when I got it, used it in every game. Second place, ASCII Grip for the PS1 as it was also an amazing era for JRPGs and they went hand in hand. First place was a translucent red DualShock 2 I had. I guess it was the only translucent red item I ever had and I love red, so it was always just a little cooler than the solid red ones.
This was fun. One of my favorites was the one-handed controller for PSOne. I played a lot of JRPGs on that system back in the day so it was really convenient.
Great video. The Wii U tablet controller is strangely one of my favorite controllers. 🎮 Also the Duke and the Atari Jaguar’s. Especially with the overlays for different games.
I have a gray and a pink Beeshu Zipper, I remember seeing tons of different colors when I was looking for them. But my favorite controller designs are the Asciiware arcade sticks. There's an SNES, Saturn, and Playstation one and they are shaped like the console that they're for. The SNES one even has little purple power and reset switches (they are just for ascetics, but when I was a kid, I thought that they would actually work when I bought it).
it's funny you brought up the hudson stick immediately after your tapping rant with the zipper. hudson was all about button mashing! hudson's spokesperson, takahashi meijin, was famous for his "16 shots per second" button mash. small note: summer carnival was held by naxat. hudson's event was the all-japan caravan festival.
I love how versitile the Genesis controller is. I had a 6 button turbo controller, it had switches that would actually make games move at diffrent paces. Street fighter 2 turbo was a trip in hyperspeed.
I actually had quite a few of the transparent colored controllers for my Nintendo 64, which was also the Jungle Green edition that came bundled with "Donkey Kong 64" and an Expansion Pak required to play the game. :D
I bought the Gulikit Kingkong 2 Pro Switch Controller from Amazon for $70, it's better than the real Nintendo Switch Pro controller. It has good weight, but the best feature is the hall effect thumb sticks, that will never get the dreaded drift. Retrobit makes a great Hori N64 style controller for the Switch. But one of my favorite controllers is my red GameCube "McQueen" Cars controller. I've got a lot of odd PS1 & PS2 controllers, A LOT !!!🤣🤣🤣🤣 Great video as always !!!
the n64 controller is so interesting, how it makes you choose between dpad or control stick. The idea of multiple hand positions is so intriguing. Most games are all right 3D, Mischief Makers and other stuff that use the 2D dpad is cool, but I don't know anything that uses the all left position, left hand on dpad right on stick. Could make a cool homebrew, maybe a racing game or something.
That's was awesome video, talking about video game controllers for whatever reason I love buying controllers on every system that I own, I can go on forever 😅. I just like those transparent colour controllers like the N64, Sony PlayStation, and Sega Dreamcast.
Lol the kids these days will never understand the N64 control but it was badass once you got used to it. Also lol I see you with that sky blue nail polish lol. Great video Erin. I'd say best controls were og playstation, super Nintendo, and Xbox. Dreamcast control was also super unique and cool.
I use to have a whole bag of random controllers. Some might think they got crazy in the ‘90s but that old Atari had a few third party companies that thought they could improve on the classic design. I had this one that was designed in a way that the base could be gripped with the button lining up with the index finger. The stick would kinda click and was real solid! I think it was by Epyx and called the 500xj Definitely would love to see more even if you don’t know a lot about them. Something about seeing different controller designs reminds me of looking for a replacement when an old one got busted
I remember hating the NES Max, because that circle thing in the middle is just useless, but I eventually figured out that it works very well if you just use the black outer circle like a D-pad; it still takes a little getting used to, but I don't think I ever went back to the original after discovering that. The Joyball is interesting, because I had a similar controller for the SEGA Master System back in the '80s; my sister has it now, since she has most of my old systems. The buttons on this thing were ENORMOUS - a bit larger than a fun-size candy bar EACH - and there was a dome at the top that acted like a D-pad; you'd put your palm over it, and it would click up, down, left, right, and diagonally to move you around the screen. I don't know what this thing was called, because to date, I've never been able to even find mention of this thing online, much less pictures of it; I got it because it's a turbo controller, but the turbo controllers you usually see for the SMS don't look so weird.
N64 controllers brought back memories playing N64 in my 20's. use to have N64 with games and controllers as well now I have just PS3 have not played in years now plays games on computer more.
I don't understand when people say the N64 controller was hard to use or they don't understand it. It was never a problem for me back when I got one. Seemed very easy and intuitive on how to hold in my opinion. I had a 3DO for a little while. Did not like it at all. Quickly sold it. I remember playing Intellivision when I was like 4 and having the cards for the telephone pads. I even recall getting that one game to switch to the the other game that was hidden on the cartridge. You could make it jump to the other game by playing with the reset switch if I recall.
That Intellivision controller you have, Erin, is from the Intellivision II model. They were a serious step downward in quality other than the fact that they were detachable. The keypad is a flat membrane and the side buttons had no sense of feedback whether you pressed it or not. The original versions had soft rubber, reactive side buttons and a keyboard membrane that had a bubble like structure over each space that "popped" with each depression. The only thing that sucks is that they're hardwired tot he console.
I actually liked the NES Max. Granted the circle was awkward and the turbo did not work on most games I played. But I quickly found that just using the ring was better.
5:32 For those, it was hit and miss. For me, the dogbone controller works very well. 10:32 Nope. Don't like it. It's too limiting. I'll take the Wiimote and Nunchuk setup over the wheel anytime. 12:38 Wasn't the Famicom Disk System like this? ... PowerA gamepads aren't that bad. Sure, they're less in heft but less in quality that equates not.
I know that the 7800 controller is a controversial one as well, but that controller is very comfortable to me, and I can play pretty much any game with it.
I feel your pain with the Power A Switch controller. I thought it kind of sucked from the beginning, and then it stopped working altogether so I had to buy a real Pro controller anyways
Erin, thank you 🙏 for sharing this. I learned a lot from your controller collection. Some of them I never even heard of lol. Btw, the Sega-cd was a cool addition. I used to play Sonic CD a lot, I thought the graphics were badass for its time. And I agree, the Wii era was really cool
I really liked the n64 controllers. Maybe a bit jarring at first, but they were comfortable and functional. I also really liked the nes max, you can use the outer black ring of the d pad like a normal dpad, I never used the red part it’s weird
Great video, I definitely want to see more. I'm glad you appreciate the N64 controller, I think it feels comfortable once you understand how it works, and it has a very unique shape. As for the Colecovision, I find it even worse than the Intellivision. I tried playing it at a convention, but that joystick was so stiff (or maybe there was an issue with that specific controller, I don't know). The Intellivision disk is not bad at all, it's just in the wrong position
Erin have you seen or heard of the controller extension for the Atari 2600 that came with Omega Race? It slipped over the joystick and gave you a second button on top.
The NES Max controller gets maligned too much. It's excellent for playing SHMUPs and games like Gun.Smoke. You can EASILY beat Castlevania and many other more difficult games with it if you press the black circle directly, treating it like a d-pad. The Beeshu Zippers are great (probably 2nd best controller for the NES, behind the Joycard Sansui SSS). And actually one of the colors was Pink. In addition to the Panasonic 3DO controllers, the popular Microsoft Sidewinder controllers were also designed to be "daisy-chained". Daisy-chaining controllers actually work pretty well. The Atari 5200 also had controller overlays.
The 90s was probably the wild west of controller designs. Third party ones tended to go absolutely crazy trying to stand out and look different with no thought of build quality or how well they actually played games as long as they were cheaper than the official ones that's all that mattered most of the time.
Probably 👍🏻🇺🇲
it was a huge gamble with third party controllers. a lot were bad but I actually really like some of the mad catz controllers.
Mad Catz
That certainly explains shit like the Roll N Rocker.
So um, listen. You need to put the words you took back where you got them.
Dang… the 6 button genesis controller was MY controller!!! I forgot all about that thing. I also love all things bright and translucent, & am a huge fan of the n64 controller. Great video!
Transluscent electronics and glittery plastic were peak aesthetic
Thank you so much for all the fantastic content, Erin. I appreciate it very much.
As someone who always had big hands the N64 controller was nice and comfy, my favorite one was my see through green one from my DK N64
og duke controller was also awesome
With that Atari 5200 controller, You can talk to Intergalactic Space Aliens with that.
Intersteller Fuckernauts! 😂
Or Astro-basterds 😂
I've always loved the N64 controller. I never even knew people hated it until years later.
It's one of my top 5 favorite video game controllers of all time.
Agreed.
Unfortunately i have had nothing but trouble with the 8bitdo controllers. All the snes ones i got had incorrect button inputs with the dpad. The best snes controller i ever had was made by ascii and had the super famicom color scheme. This was a great video. I always like seeing controllers i never had.
This content is great and I stop everything I am doing when I see a new Erin video notification
You're the best!
I loved it! I could listen to you talk controllers or pretty much any thing for hours. Love 💕
Bliss.
The problem with the first-party N64 controller is that the analog stick wears out.
So get a replacement when you can.
Yes more controller videos, please! This video was great =)
I remember that issue of Nintendo Power with all the third party SNES controllers. I was always intrigued by that single handed one that was just a control pad on one side and some small buttons elsewhere. Apparently you'd use that to game and the other hand to draw maps/etc in rpgs.
I don't even own an x box one but its my favorite go to controller for modern controllers
I think I like the SNES controller the best. My hands aren't very big, and the SNES controller feels just right for my hands.
That said, I am a fan of the N64 controller as well! I actually really like it, and I'm definitely a fan of the coloured-transparent electronics like those controllers you showed.

Honestly the n64 controller is good for people with big hands too. Other than the analog stick wearing out its one of the best controllers ever.
Back then before the Wii, I imagined the N64 controller as a gun or crossbow because of the Z trigger and thinking how cool it be to include the NES Zapper technology. Two generations later Nintendo comes up with the Wii controller and nunchuck.
Love my 8bitdo Pro2. Just wish it had Hall Effect sticks
There I was thinking what should I watch and bam , thanks Erin, we all loves ya 😊 keep up the great work
Nintendo, SNES , Famicon, Sega, Sega Saturn, N64, and Dreamcast. Man back in the days. I miss those controllers. I did have the watermelon see through n64 controller
The NES Max was my favorite controller as a kid. I'm not sure why, haven't used it since back then, but I was so sad when my friend broke my NES Max.
A few Colecovision games did have button overlays. They slid into the slot on the side of the controller.
Glad to know I held my N64 controller the wrong ✨Erin Plays✨way too!
😂😂
Another cool thing about the Beeshu Zipper is that it originally came with an attachment that went in the d-pad to make it function as a joystick.

Give her more money to buy them then....
6:16 it looks like something you'd lower a terminator into a vat of molten metal with.
Your design tickles my brain in a wonderful way. Love ya Erin 😎💙
ERIN!
i'd like to see you do long play videos.
what was the first game you beat/completed?
what games can you play all the way through?
what games do you play over and over?
what games do you like to play when you are sick and need cheered up?
do you like the Samurai Pizza Cat's?
you're the best.
-your buddy, James.
Knocking it out of the park again erin!!! Definitely do a part 2 sometime in the future if you can... it was really fun to here you riff about the controllers you find fascinating, and unique
Very cool! Always love seeing a new video come out. Thank you for the trip down nostalgia lane!
There’s something about your last two videos that I have just loved. They’re all always great, but recently they’ve been so chill and casual. A real joy to watch. Way to go, Erin!!!
That’s awesome to hear, thank you!
Finally...this is the topic we all need. Someone has to have a NES Advantage. Now I really love the quality of the 8bitDo controllers.
The N64 controller is awesome. I have one that has been modified and painted gold.

You're correct about using the original Sega controller mold. At least that was what I was told when I worked at the game store. Great video!
Especially with the overlays for different games.
loved it, my favorite controller is the game cube
N64 controllers we're awesome
I have a gray and a pink Beeshu Zipper, I remember seeing tons of different colors when I was looking for them. But my favorite controller designs are the Asciiware arcade sticks. The SNES one even has little purple power and reset switches (they are just for ascetics, but when I was a kid, I thought that they would actually work when I bought it).
For me the best official Nintendo controller to date is strangely enough is the Wii U Pro controller...
the nes max worked great when i played super spike v'ball especially for the turbo to make super spiking easier
it's funny you brought up the hudson stick immediately after your tapping rant with the zipper. hudson was all about button mashing! hudson's spokesperson, takahashi meijin, was famous for his "16 shots per second" button mash. small note: summer carnival was held by naxat. hudson's event was the all-japan caravan festival.
Awesome collection! Thanks for sharing!
I love how versitile the Genesis controller is.
I had a 6 button turbo controller, it had switches that would actually make games move at diffrent paces.
Street fighter 2 turbo was a trip in hyperspeed.
Thanks for this neat controllers video Erin!
Without controllers we would be at the mercy of games.
One I could never come to terms with was...the Dreamcast. It felt like it was an enemy whatever game you played.
Been a subscriber for a while now Erin really enjoy the content
I actually had quite a few of the transparent colored controllers for my Nintendo 64, which was also the Jungle Green edition that came bundled with "Donkey Kong 64" and an Expansion Pak required to play the game. :D
I bought the Gulikit Kingkong 2 Pro Switch Controller from Amazon for $70, it's better than the real Nintendo Switch Pro controller. Your nails and your sweater look different in every hand closeup! ... what kind of magic is that! ... 🥰 great colllection and great video...
Yeah I filmed the close ups at different times, haha. Thanks for watching!
@@ErinPlaysthanks to You, i love your videos...
Lol the kids these days will never understand the N64 control but it was badass once you got used to it. Also lol I see you with that sky blue nail polish lol. Great video Erin. I'd say best controls were og playstation, super Nintendo, and Xbox. Dreamcast control was also super unique and cool.
She loves the n64 Trident Controller. _What a keeper!_
I liked the virtual boy controller
I love that Retrobit Genesis controller. It’s the only controller I can get to work with embodiment of scarlet devil.
I remember the 90's where see thru colored plastics on electronics were the norm. V-Tech cordless phones come to mind immediately.
Definitely would love to see more even if you don’t know a lot about them. Something about seeing different controller designs reminds me of looking for a replacement when an old one got busted
Nice outfit enter that fall look, feels good to see a new video too.
Thank you! 😊
Awesome Pilotwings 64 soundtrack you chose, Erin!
Thanks! 😊
Another great video. Thank you Erin

That SMS controller sounds absolutely insane!
I definitely want to see another controller video.
N64 controllers brought back memories playing N64 in my 20's. use to have N64 with games and controllers as well now I have just PS3 have not played in years now plays games on computer more.
sega Genesis still has the best & simple controller for me. Also Dreamcast has the weirdest controller for me. Still, Miss Dreamcast 😢
I own the jungle green from my childhood I still have the original controller 😊
YAY!! New Erin video!!!! :D
I don't understand when people say the N64 controller was hard to use or they don't understand it. It was never a problem for me back when I got one. I was watching this at 2x speed and @7:29 just caught me by surprise! LOL moment!
youve really ramped up the erin plays videos. im grateful :-) i think halloween must be motivating you
I'm not a collector but that pingu one is AMAZING.
I had that Nes turbo with the round directional, it sucked but I found if you just push the black outer ring its a lot easier to control.
Pingu controller, lol! 😂😜 Pingu was claymation.
There's an idea for a new video segment - "Erin Controlls" 😉😜
A part 2 would be cool though 🙂
That Intellivision controller you have, Erin, is from the Intellivision II model. They were a serious step downward in quality other than the fact that they were detachable. i actually liked the n64 controller
The Neo-Geo looks boss. I did play it at a friends and I can't remember it being that huge. Yet I guess it was.
The green Zipper controller matches your skeleton decoration back there
I actually liked the NES Max. Granted the circle was awkward and the turbo did not work on most games I played. But I quickly found that just using the ring was better.

18:01 Lol, those literally look like the PS3 prototype controllers
Great video, I definitely want to see more. I'm glad you appreciate the N64 controller, I think it feels comfortable once you understand how it works, and it has a very unique shape. As for the Colecovision, I find it even worse than the Intellivision. I tried playing it at a convention, but that joystick was so stiff (or maybe there was an issue with that specific controller, I don't know). The Intellivision disk is not bad at all, it's just in the wrong position
The model 2 sega Saturn controller is one of my favorites
Erin have you seen or heard of the controller extension for the Atari 2600 that came with Omega Race? It slipped over the joystick and gave you a second button on top.
No I haven’t, I’ll have to look it up!

Cool video Erin. 👍🏻🇺🇲
The three button Genesis controller feels like a part of my body that I just like to hold
awesome controller video erin!!!!!!!!!!
