Daz is correct. In college football, if the ball carrier hits the ground, the play is over. He does not have to be touched. In the NFL, if you're not touched, you can get back up and run with the ball.
Also, if the player fumbles and it is recovered by a fellow offensive player, they cannot advance it past the point of recovery. This eliminates any trickery where the offense can “fake fumble” for a big gain.
If the defense recovers the fumble, they can advance it back as far as possible.
That O helmet was Oregon. Phil Knight and Nike pump a lot of money into the team and they have some of the coolest uniforms in the country. Some people understandably prefer the classic uniforms that some teams wear, but Oregon comes out in a different uniform combination every game.

I’d say somewhere between 80 to 90 percent of these hits are now penalties. Unprotected, blind side, targeting(hitting with the top of the helmet). 15 yard penalties everywhere

Proper defense and Instinct are what most of these hits consist of. Some were truly flagrant but most are great stops . Today most will be flags and suspensions of one game though in college lol.
I think college players have alot to prove and need to make a name for themselves to get into the NFL. They put everything on the line and I think that's why in my opinion more people enjoy this over NFL. Between the rivalry and the loud band/halftime shows and the overall energy in the game leading to big hits. It's amazing to watch and even more exciting watching in person.
and now you can see why "peel back blocks" arent allowed anymore. they are concussion makers. its just not worth a play to hurt another player for possibly life.
If they catch the ball and fumble before a knee, butt, or elbow hits the ground you can recover it or pick it up and run. If they don’t have complete control of the ball (bobbling or not getting Two steps down then it is considered not complete.) if it’s deemed the receiver does not have full control and they drop it then it’s incomplete (not considered a fumble). If he has control and then gets the ball knocked out it is considered a fumble.
10:53 That's Cornelius Bennett of Buffalo Bills fame and 5 Super Bowl appearances to boot. Honestly one of the best pass rushers in NFL history, second only in his era to LT. This play in particular is probably one of the more infamous in University of Alabama history.
Highlight is of him sacking my favorite NFL QB of alltime. Wish Steve would have gotten more shots, his probowl year was amazing.
Second in his era? Are you forgetting guys like Bruce Smith, Reggie White, Kevin Greene etc.? Even if you only include linebackers, was Cornelius a better pass rusher than guys like Andre Tippett, Derrick Thomas, Rickey Jackson etc.?

And then Derrick Thomas showed up at Alabama. He wrote in his journal that he planned to break every defensive record set by Cornelius Bennett. And damned if he didn't.

A lot of those guys have serious medical conditions later on in life...I'll rather protect the player then seeing a few extra hard hits. The game is still fun to watch without it
Yeah you can still hit hard legally. Pads and the helmet give a sense of false security and become a weapon because you'd never hit someone with that amount of force if you had no pads on. The brain is still a floating entity within the skull so the g-force alone causing the brain to smack up against your skull isn't being stopped by a helmet.
It's hard though, because many helmet to helmet tackles are incidental. You're suppose to get low and go for their hip to chest area but as an offensive player you're trying to get low too, so at the last second you're going to duck your head.
13:45 Daz is correct. In college you don't have to be touched to be ruled down. You also only need to get one foot down in bounds on a catch for it to be complete, as opposed to the NFL where both feet have to touch in bounds.

If the receiver catches the ball and takes a couple steps and then gets hit in the ball comes loose, it's a fumble. If the receiver grabs it but is hit instantly in the ball comes loose, they often just call that an incomplete pass because he never fully had true possession
You are all correct. Keeping head on a swivel and being aware of all defenders helps keep from being blasted. Always told my son that while he was playing.
A lot of these hits like at 19:10 where the quarterback throws to a receiver with two incoming defenders is called a 'hospital pass' because it has a high likelihood of injury

There are supposed to be people around the receivers, they have blockers and their job is the watch the receivers back. That’s what you see if done correctly a sack almost off screen. That’s the blockers protecting the receiver, then once the receiver gets the ball, the blockers surround him and try and make a hole for the receiver to take off and head to the field goal.
A Couple of Terms you need to know when watching these Videos.
1. De-Cleating - De-Cleating is hitting an opponent SO hard that the LAST think that hits the ground are their feet.
2. SLOBERKNOCKER OR SLOBERKNOCKERED- Getting Sloberknockered is getting hit SO hard that your body loses control of its, "retaining capabilities", and "stuff" leaves... ALL your orifices, so that when the cameras pans in your face is covered with snot.
PS: College football is a MUCH better version of the game.
18-19 year Olds that think they're bulletproof hitting people with NO CONCERN of losing a paycheck due to injury like the pros.

1:35 As a Gamecock fan, one of the greatest plays of all time. I a major bowl game South Carolina had just clearly stopped Michigan on 4th down. The chains came out to measure and clearly showed the football was short of the 1st down marker but for some reason the refs gave Michigan a 1st down anyway. The very next play Jadeveon Clowney (6'6" 270) shoots through the line line a rocket and blows up the running back, knocks his helmet off and without even a pause grabs the fumble with one hand, looking for the end zone. Gamecocks win!
As a lifelong Clemson fan, I’ve always thought that was one of the hardest hits I have ever seen. Definitely an example of comeuppance if there ever was one!
Being an Ohio State fan, I'm surely biased towards any time TTUN gets blasted. But that still is one of my all time favorite plays. I remember watching the game and it happening. The room went silent for a few seconds, then erupted like a volcano.

I think I remember a Sports Science episode where they measured the force created by a football tackle, and if I remember correctly, they measured forces greater than a car crash, so you guys are right on there. Some of these hits are absolutely brutal.
Major Wright was mentioned. He was a Free Safety, so he was a head hunter. He was free to run the field.
When we played ball when we were young. They would have the whole team in a circle, and one guy would be in the middle. The coaches would call which player to hit the guy in the middle.
9:46 that hit was personal. The Georgia receivers spent the whole week talking trash about Rosegreens mom and she passed away the day before that game. He was headhunting and whoever caught that pass was getting destroyed. Really thought Reggie Brown died right there on live TV cuz he didn’t move for like 15-20 mins.

The def can't touch him after the first 5 yards until he makes contact with ball.
To be a catch after catching you need to bring in under control. Make a football move. Other wise it's just incomplete.

13:01 Ball's either caught or it isn't, the snag here for the uninitiated is that the referee has to make a judgement call based on whether the player who receives does so and accomplishes a "football move", usually a couple of steps. If a player catches the ball and takes a step while still adjusting to a running stance but gets leveled and the ball comes out, the refs are probably going to call that an incompletion IF the ball hits the ground afterwards. If a defensive player snags the loose ball while it's in the air and hasn't bounced, that's an interception instead of a fumble.... but if the player makes that football move, 2-3 steps or establishes a running stance, and the ball is knocked loose, then it's a fumble and it doesn't matter if it hits the ground, it needs to be recovered by somebody as it's still a live ball.
Catch > no football move > ball knocked out > hits ground > incomplete, dead ball
Catch > no football move > ball knocked out > taken before hits ground > interception, play continues
Catch > football move > ball knocked out > hits ground OR taken in air > fumble, live ball, continue play

Hi Boys... The reason that the college players sometime stop when then pick up a fumble and other times run is because in college football, once the player touches the ground (falls, or touches a knee or elbow) the play is dead. However, if they can pick up a fumble while still on their feet, they can run with it. Same with interceptions. If they catch it and don't fall, they can run with it, but if they catch it and fall the ball is dead at the spot they touched the ground. Also, to be a catch, the player must demonstrate complete control and then make a "football move", such as turning to run with the ball. That is why some of the videos where the receiver barely has the ball and it is knocked out of his hands is NOT a fumble. It is an incomplete pass. Of course if you are running with the ball and lose it that is always a fumble.

The hit @ 3:14 left the ball carrier with severe brain damage to the point he had to be taught how to walk again. The guy who delivered the hit broke his neck and was knocked unconscious
You guys need to look into the rules for what counts as a catch or “reception” because on pass plays the criteria for a catch must be met before the ball can be advanced or fumbled.

If you lead with your helmet, it's called "Targeting". It's a "Personal Foul", and a 15 yard penalty. It's the Refs call as to whether it was incidental or not. It can get you ejected from the game.
For the second clip, there’s a lot of context to why the announcer said they deserve to have it that happened prior to that hit
It's a weird rule about possession after a catch. You have to have the ball under control, and make a "football-like move" (???). Depends on the Ref.
Those blind side hits are called "getting ear holed"...bc you're hit on the side of the ear hole in the helmet. I got ear holed in high school so bad I had to go to the sideline and tighten the screws in my face mask with a screwdriver bc they came loose. Since CTE a lot of those hits are illegal now, and any hit towards the head are as well.

Many people enjoy college level sports more than professional because they still have that extra bit of drive to earn their way to the top instead of shifting focus toward maintaining a pro career.
For most athletes in the pros, In order to Maintain a pro career you still have to Excell or else you would be cut for the younger cheaper player. The grind doesn't stop on the pro level, that's why when many rookies get drafted they always says, "this is just the beginning".
The passes across the middle, about ten yards past the line of scrimmage, are always going to be brutal. All three safeties and the linebackers are right there to tee off. You are literally hanging your receiver out to dry when you hit them with those passes.
When they stop running after picking up a "fumble" it's bc the pass is incomplete and the the play is dead. A legitimate fumble can be returned if the ball is live. Knee not touched down in college, knee not touched down while being touched by opposing player in NFL
In order for it to be a catch the receiver has to physically possess the ball while maintaining complete control of the ball and make a football move which usually means he has to take a couple of steps. If you are not able to make a football move before you go out of bounds or before your body is down than you have to maintain control of the ball before you go go out of bounds or not let the ball hit the ground until you gain control. Once that has been accomplished, if the ball comes out it is a live ball (unless you are down before it comes free) both teams can pick it up. If the offense recovers the ball it's down at the spot of the fumble or where the ball is recovered whichever is the furthest back, unless the player who fumbled the ball picks it up then they can advance the ball forward. If the defense recovers the ball they can advance the ball no matter where the fumble occurred. The reason you see them stop is because it was ruled an incomplete pass because they didnt maintain control of the ball and make a football move the other part to remember is the ground can not cause the fumble if the reason you lost control of the ball is because you hit the ground with the ball it is down there.
The thing about college football is that you have guys that are more "normal", aka college football is the highest level of football that they will ever get to; going against guys who are going to easily make it into the NFL and do really really well. So its a combination of size difference, skill difference and lack of discipline in tackling that make these hits look so violent at a college level. Its basically the same thing as putting some NFL players and some high school players together and seeing what happens.
That college football game in Dublin, Ireland was my University of Central Florida (UCF) Knights vs Penn State in 2014 and Penn State won 26-24! The stadium was sold out at 55,000!!!

Imagine a billion dollar industry capitalizing off these kids images in video games and television contracts and everything else and they don't get shit for getting their brains broken except a communications degree and a lottery ticket to the pros.
Once the cable news networks established daily sports highlight shows (CNN, ESPN), the instances of players launching themselves helmet down into the head of the opposing player increased as players tried to make the highlight real. Almost all of the hits shown in this video are illegal now as hits like these do cause permanent damage.

As far as picking up a fumble and returning it. It's a judgement call, if you can secure it and not be considered "down," meaning you aren't touched while on the ground, go for it. However, simply securing the fumble recovery for a turnover is the top priority. You may be thinking about a grab and go while not getting a strong grip on the football and lose it yourself.
You don't have to be touched in College to be down. Anytime your forearms and knees touch the grass you're down.

In 1989 the NCAA changed the rule and allowed advancing a fumble. Some of these highlights are before 1989. In the professional leagues it's always been allowed. However, in 1978 the NFL allowed the advancement of a forward fumble.
Sometimes college hits are worse than NFL hits because you sometimes have definite pro-worthy players blasting guys that have absolutely no chance to become pro.

#7 at 1:38 for South Carolina Jadeveon Clowney went on to be the 1st overall draft pick. Never quite reached his potential but still a great pass rusher in the league.

No it doesn't. It's a violent sport, and it'll continue going on. Boxing, MMA, hockey, auto racing, baseball, all have severe injuries and they just keep going on.
The NFL generated over $17 billion in revenue in 2021. Look at the new TV deal the B1G just signed. It is for $8 billion over 7 years and that is just one conference. Those numbers guarantee football is going absolutely nowhere.
@@rdramos13 ... I did not say it was going to stop altogether, I said it will make people ponder about the sport further into the future. What it can do is potentially stop some parents from encouraging their young kids to go into the little leagues as well as in later schooling. It' most likely that parents have already been doing that for decades, we just don't know it, although there have been news & documentaries of that for decades as well. The big driver of going into pro sports is athlete income. Remove that income & practically all pro sports will drop like dead flies in a span of one century or so.

The thing about college football is that not only are they all younger and less experienced, but a lot of these guys aren't exactly going pro, if you know what I mean.
For the technical note, college ball is a little different. If you have the ball and are on the ground, the play is dead. Doesn't matter if someone doesn't touch you like the NFL.

Y’all should react to biggest rivalry games in college and NFL. They had a bunch in this video. Florida vs Georgia. LSU VS ALAMBAMA. FLORIDA ST. Vs Miami. It will give y’all a better insight to some of the games and when those hits come it’s loaded with hate because it’s the rival school. Many of these hits (but not all) would be illegal now, and in fact some were illegal at the time of some of the newer clips, hence the penalty flags flying. Leading with the crown of the helmet, forceable helmet to helmet contact, targeting defenseless player., etc, can all be flagged now and result in a 15 yard penalty and automatic ejection.
I played in the '70s when the equipment wasn't as good, effective, or in some cases even yet in existence, and there were far fewer rules about hitting. In fact, hits like these were encouraged and rewarded. I played both ways, LB (linebacker) and TE (tight end). I got lit up once when I was coming across the field with target fixation on the ball carrier and did not see the lead blocker (running back) coming at full speed to cut me off. I saw him a split second before the collision. We were both running at full speed and he led with his helmet and got me right under the chin. Bam. Good hit. I stayed in the game but didn't remember the next couple of plays.
However, even worse was one time when it was me who delivered the "decleater". I was at TE, and it was a running play. I had to get the seal block on the LB, who did not see me waiting for him as he came laterally at full speed with his eyes on the ball carrier. I hit him right in the numbers and laid him out, but the hit lifted him off the ground and his knees got me in the lower ribs right under my shoulder pads. Again, I didn't show how much it hurt to keep from coming out of the game, but wow, it hurt. Rib injuries are notoriously slow to heal. Mine took probably a solid year before they healed enough to where another hit didn't set them off all over again. Rib pads weren't very common back then but I got a set and wore them just to give them a chance to heal, otherwise any contact would have been too painful to allow me to play.
It's violent game, and playing hurt is part of the deal.
