I only wish this debate was more targeted at what’s better for the environment rather than it’s dumb to be a vegetarian. Facts could have been given for the amount of water, rainforests etc., for growing meat too. Everything has its environmental effect but what would have the least damage to our bodies and the environment?
I'm not trying to antagonise you but I think the point she was trying to make was people should not think they are contributing to the environment simply by saying they are vegetarian or vegan and look in more detail into the manner in which their food was produced and the industry as a whole. However, I do agree that some solution should have been given. Perhaps it's in the entire video and not this clipping.
Am a vegetarian not to save the environment but for moral reasons as there is so much pain and trauma involved in killing an animal just bcoz you crave taste or nutrition. I remember years ago had been friends with a girl at a workplace and I casually asked her - u veg or non veg? And she told that earlier they were non veg but one day her grandfather went to buy chicken & there he saw a dead chicken which had tears on the corners of its eyes & since then the entire family gave up non veg. Environmentalism & morality w.r.t. food should be separate topics for discussion, I think.
@@AnuragYouTubingeven if you are a vegetarian u are harming an animal either way for example to get honey u need to destroy nests and the use of pesticides to grow crops kills many birds and insects which is worse that farming them because their deaths are not even used for nutrition
Taking a sense of superior morality over "not killing" an animal for food is absurdly stupid. I mean biologically we are omnivorous. Meat played a pivotal role in our evolution as homo sapience. If there is anything that we need to keep in check is the way we get the meat from livestock. Rather than industrializing we should be more humane in how we raise the livestock.
She talked about, how much food we it. The mass production of food grains is the concern. 80% of crops that we grow goes to feed the animals. 1000lts water is used to produce 1 ltr milk. So turning vegan is much much better for environment.
Just another 3 more questions should answer that 1. How much of the food crops grown in the US used as feed for animals? How much water does it take to get one KG of meat vs one kg of rice? If one human needs couple of chickens/ Goats etc in a week and assuming all are hard core non vegetarians, Where will you keep all those animals?!?!
Meat is also farmed why didn't she tell that? Producing meat takes 1000x more water than plants. Being veg/vegan is definitely "environmentally friendly"
there is a oxford scientist comprehensive study based on meta data analysis where he proved that going vegan is the best thing that a person could do for climate change.
Climate change should be addressed by calling the right people in the podcast. Being plant based makes a lot of sense for the planet's health as well as for own too.
This is an accurate explanation about the reality of vegetarianism, veganism, wrong way of growing food and the plight of farmers. The old lady has put it together brilliantly. hats off.
With all due respect to this person who's trying to answer the question, the people at the roundtable need someone like Dr Vandana Shiva & her authority over the subject and the personality to make them understand.
It's her way of taking sides. She is talking from human perspectives, climate change is about the nature and for all living being. Every animal should have right to life in a natural manner. Farming animals for food creates an imbalance.
I think the answer is more or less lost in trying to adress everything in one go. The question was if Vegetarianism is good for the planet? So I would have like that you set some metric first before jumping in, let's say, the metric is CO2e emmssion per gram of food / per 1000 calories / per gram of protien or so and so . And now, base on that rank all type of food on it for India. Geographical context makes a huge difference, some food in western world could be a huge CO2e contributor, while consuming the same thing in Indian context might be beneficial for the environment. And then you can layer up other considerartions on top of this.

She speaks for the farmers, but just because a farmer learnt to "use" an animal to make money doesn't mean he can't do something else. If he can afford to own cattle, surely he is doing better than those who rear chickens, better than those who fish, better than those who grow chillies & peas & potatoes. Industrial farming is the issue, which leads to surplus but also considerable waste, pollution . Even growing vegan food in industrial scale is worse for environment then rearing chickens in backyard which eat plant wastes
It’s the same logic as people who opposed Amazon’s entry into India saying it will kill the mom and pop shops. ‘What will happen to the farmers if they don’t get to rear cattle’. Well for starters, there’ll be more land to produce crops for humans than for animals. 70% of agriculture land is used for animal farming. Isn’t that a troubling statistic? Ofcourse the problems she highlighted about industrialisation of crops are valid. Two things can be true at the same time.
Felt really good watching her speak while devouring my grilled chicken from a newly found place at Uttarahalli. She must be taking her eggs, fishes and chickens corretly as her Limbic system and cognitive function is immaculately appropriate.
The most difficult or arguments to debate are ones which has elements of truth mixed with some aspects which are not true. She is right when she talks about the benefits of farm animals as income security for small farmers. But industrial farming of animals of the west and similarly poultry farming in India carries huge negative consequences for the GHG emissions, pandemics like bird flu, antibiotics overuse, large scale deforestation etc. Unfortunately nature does not respect national boundaries. The GHG emissions by Beef Industry and Dairy Industry impacts the global climate significantly. This in turn even impacts the small and marginal farmers who are dependent on stable climate and rainfall for their crops. Of course, the sentience of animals and the massive cruelty footprint of industrial animal agriculture is a different topic in itself. One thing is certain. The way we are increasing meat consumption across the world, we are damaging the planet from so many perspectives. The animal industry is a behemoth and has crazy practices which are not generally known to consumers. Eg the recent outbreak of bird flu amongst cows in USA is because cows have been fed with “poultry feed” , ie faeces, feathers and dead birds scraped from the poultry shop floors!
Though being pure vegetarian family...I still fear giving milk to my kids because of mixed issues with fake milk, the hormonal injection given to cattle...
plus the tangent that the lady is going through of hurting the farmers is not the answer to the question is it bad for the environment. Cows are definitely bad for the environment as methane is 80 times more potent green house gas than Co2 over a 20 year period and this is the most critical 20 year period for humanity.
India is surrounded by oceans 3 side. How is it possible to become vegetarian. Government also promote poultry farming of chicken. And also give subsidies.
even if you are a vegetarian u are harming an animal either way for example to get honey u need to destroy nests and the use of pesticides to grow crops so the lady is right
The answer could be very simple, but the concerned person dragged other things into this for which seperate debate can be done. Net net being Veg is best , better than non veg and vegan. Bharat has been vegetarian since ancient times, our ancestors have lived like that in a healthy manner. I agree that now a days food are not grown correctly but that is a seperate point which has solution by going in organic farming.
Did this lady ever wondered where does the farmer get the feed for their animal? Most of the cattle in the villages are freed to roam in the nereby forests for feed. Which creates the scarcity of food for the wild animals (herbivores). The resulting deforestation just to feed the farm animals creates imbalance in the wild. Herbivores losing their food resulting in carnivores losing their food. An environmentalist who has done their due diligence would know about this. Unofrtunately, this lady doesn't seem to be having any expertise to speak on such issues.
