Wales embark on a new era after dismissing former manager Robert Page over the summer, replacing him with Craig Bellamy who steps into his first senior managerial role in charge of the national team he represented 78 times as a player. Failure to qualify for Euro 2024, combined with an embarrassing pair of friendly results over the summer against Gibraltar and Slovakia (D1, L1), led the FAW to make a change as they head into the UEFA Nations League (UNL).
Bellamy’s tenure will ultimately be judged on whether he can take the Dragons to major tournaments, but he can make a good first impression by ending a six-match winless run in the UNL (D1, L5). That led to Wales’ relegation down to League B where their record is far more impressive (W7, D1, L2), just as it is on their own turf where they’re unbeaten in over a year inside 90 minutes (W3, D3).
This will be the third time that they’ve faced Turkey since June 2023, and the visitors have had the better of the previous two meetings (W1, D1). Those unbeaten outings came during qualification for Euro 2024, where the Crescent Stars earned plenty of plaudits for their performances en route to a quarter-final exit at the hands of the Netherlands.
Vincenzo Montella’s side were promoted from League C in the previous UNL cycle, despite suffering an embarrassing away defeat against the Faroe Islands (2-1). That could cause alarm among the travelling fans still, as Turkey have failed to win any of their last five away matches (D2, L3) - a run that started with a 1-1 draw against Wales at the Cardiff City Stadium in November!
Key battle: Ethan Ampadu has missed just one of his country’s last 17 competitive matches, though he’s still yet to score in his 52 internationals - only three outfield players have been capped more often by Wales without scoring. He’ll be tasked with tying down Turkey talisman Arda Güler, who became the youngest player to ever score on debut at this summer’s Euros, where he directly contributed to three goals in five games (G1, A2).
Hot stat: Across their last six matches, Wales players failed to score from open play in five of them.
