That smile at the end seemed really complex though. It was the kind of smile someone who is trying not to cry gives. Honestly that broke my heart more. I loved this.
To me it seemed she was holding in a laugh because the boy was struggling with blowing the candle out. A more strict director would have done a retake but we know Aurora like's to keep those little flaws.

@itsaurinotariel if this is your interpretation... for me, it is a symbol for childhood. And you can see it in different ways. I think kids like jelly. But it is not good for you. It is just sugar, water and gelatine... it is empty food, no nutrition. As a parent you might think that you do something good, but in fact it is bad... in this video it is like a symbol for the hollow relationship between the children, parents, in all directions... and nobody is eating. The only thing which is consumed is the wine by the father... and red wine is a symbol as well... of course...

I've been in a really bad place recently, with a lot of dark thoughts spinning around in my head and "The Conflict of the Mind" really hit hard for me. It felt heartbreaking, familiar and comforting at the same time. I felt seen. Aurora is such a special artist and person. Also, I just wanted to say that I have been binging a lot of your content recently and it has helped distract me from everything so thank you for sharing your passion for music with us.
Everyone is struggling, yet no one is talking. Only thing left is silence and lack of eye contact, because bringing anything up could strike an unwanted conversation. I just have to say one more thing. Aurora is one of those few that isn't showboating her voice prowess. She sings the way the song demands. She's a story teller first and foremost and not a circus artist. She never goes, look at me. Am I not good and fantastic? No, she never does that. I sometimes feel like a kid again around Aurora. Curled up beside my grandmother, telling me stories. Stories that are happy or sad. Funny or right out outlandish. Its a very strange feeling for a man who's life is nearing its end. You pretty much said everything I am thinking and feeling about this song. When she goes into the chorus the frisson is plentiful. Also, can you imagine being those actors? Ok, your job is to sit in a room with Aurora and ignore her. HARDEST. JOB. EVER.
Looking at the casting for the video, it seems the actors are a real family. Except for Aurora of course. The actor playing the Mother also choreographed and danced in the Your Blood video.
I always expected an amazing song from Aurora, but I didn't expect this. This song touches me a lot. I think about my dad and sister in my period of depression a few years ago, I probably make them feel exactly like the lyrics. I cried every time I heard the song.

@@dianneking3842 Miranda is not bipolar. That's Victoria. Aurora said several times that she's still learning to ask her loved ones for help when she's in pain. She tend to isolate herself and deal with it on her own. I think she dedicated this song to Miranda because she's a big support for her when she's having a hard time.

It's supposed to be a happy moment of blowing out the candles, but she's sad as it happens, and then forces out the smile, with no creases at the side of the eyes, and tears building up, with her face definitely turning back to sadness as it cuts out. Song's straightforward, "The conflict of the mind" is about contradictions in what we show and how we feel, or maybe in our feelings generally. Bottling up our emotions, lacking hope, longing for more but only seeing the worst, and she wants people to show their real feelings and emotions, their real selves, to allow others in so they can be loved. She's said she had a happy childhood with a family that was open with each other. I think this has more to do with the Nordic region overall where people keep to themselves, bottle up their emotions, and depression / suicide is a real issue. I believe Her Uncle committed suicide, which lead to "Lucky". She lost a friend during the 2011 mass shooting that lead to "Little Boy in the Grass". I imagine that's just the tip of the iceberg for experiences like this from people living in those nations. 5:50 - I know she's used this style before. Maybe I'm thinking of her cover of Nick Drake's "Pink Moon". This song hits in an uncomfortable way for me. I'm the youngest of my family. Someday I'm going to be sitting at that table with no one else there. It's not something I like thinking about. Makes me appreciate my family more though, despite whatever petty arguments we may have.
I got the feeling this song depicted a family bereaved. Grief isn’t accepted or talked about much at all. At first I thought it was Aurora who had passed, none of them look at or react as if she is there. Then I saw the clothes as place markers for the parents and that’s when I cried. 😢 Some of the lyrics fit this meaning too. ‘That we’re running out of time, Open up the gates, Bury something down, In your eyes I saw a longing.’ Everyone at some point buries their grief, longs for their lost loved one and then tries desperately to dig up memories. Did not expect anybody to get a reaction out this quick 😳 I have a recollection of Aurora saying that she had everything ready for the album before 'Your Blood' was released, and that was done as a quick collaboration, like a few days. So my feeling is that 'Your Blood' may well not be on the new album ... we shall see ... soon, hopefully 😉
She does like to evolve and does not go backwards, but I hope there are more upbeat songs coming up for this album. Frankly her voice is so amazing I would listen to her read the dictionary in a foreign language.
I instantly fell in love with Your Blood and still can't stop listen to it. And again I fell in love with The Conflict of the Mind in my very first listen. I think people who have a hard time enjoying Aurora's new songs still didn't get that she's not worried about making music for people to enjoy but rather she sends us a message with every single song. To me, this time Aurora is understanding that if we can solve the problems inside of our families and break the loop of silence and resentment, if we can get access to each other hearts, maybe then we can find the love that is hidden in those conflicts. And then we can help the others and get people more united.

I cried seein the music video, I love my family so much but at dinner is and was always like this, we never really talked about our feelings or important things. I get that they didn't want to worry me and my sister, but this led to so many problems nowadays that I'm trying to fix, aurora is truly my fav artist for this kind of sensibility she shows every time a song is released

I liked "Your Blood" right away, but it took a bit before I LOVED it, but I love this one right out of the gate. And after a few listens, it only gets better and better for me. I think this is so, so good. Just like "The Gods We Can Touch," it's pretty obvious that the new album is going to be many different styles, and I'm here for that! Even if you don't necessarily love everything, I think it's great that she keeps evolving, and not just trying to do "All My Demons Greeting Me as a Friend" over and over again (which, unfortunately, some fans think she should do).

The contrast of the sound & spoken-word feel of the verses really contrasts with the clarity & soaring vocals of the chorus. Kind of validating the feeling that there can be sadness, but there is a hopefulness that we can overcome it with each others help. Dammit... I got notification about your reaction last night but it was blocked in Norway ofc. This song and video hit close to home for me, and it broke my heart but was comforting at the same time. I think you are on point about what it's about. AND I think it's one of those rare songs that touches her personal life a little. She said many times that she''s still learing to ask her loved ones for help and support when she's in pain. She tend to isolate herself and deal with it on her own. I'm pretty sure this is a sister song to "Your blood". If you read the lyrics they seem connected. The video is also recorded in the same room. You can see the window with the curtains moving. Aurora is not just a singer, but a story teller. And a master of turning the lyrics and videos into a puzzle for her fans to solve. Many of her songs are connected to each other and if you figure out who, you get the full story. She's also having a blast leaving tiny little clues on social media. Often WAY before she relase something new. Its so creative and a lot of fun for her fans. My guess is that she will release a new album in february. She finished "The Gods We can Touch" tour in the end of August last year. She's starting her next tour in Norway in march, so it makes sense. To me at least. lol

There was absolutely a hint of Billie Eilish in those whispery across-a-phone-line modulated opening vocals. Then the clear, reverb-laden vocals of the chorus kicked in and a shiver went down my spine! I love this, and if this is a part of where her new album is going, along with "Your Blood", I'm all in! This new song surprised me by its simplicity. I expected the aurorian atmosphere and harmonies, some of the northern magic and complex melody, that can be found in almost all of her songs. I was underwhelmed by this the first time. It sounded so ordinary and simple. Like a song that could play in some childrens tale (Three Wishes for Cinderella, that would fit excellently ,). For a second I feared that this could be the first song I don't like :D. But I gave it two more listens and like it more and more. I am really dumb when it comes to listening to new things, anyway... The previous single was an instant banger, an energetic and fresh surprise, this one is a surprise in the oposite direction. Let's listen some more, then, let's let its magic work on me :)
What a nice surprise from Aurora and from you too. Thursday = best day! Aurora sings a bit differently here with effects on her voice I’ve not heard before. But in terms of feeling, this is classic Aurora. Sad song but with a bit of hope mixed in. It’s an instant favorite.
Given the majority of the song addresses a second person "you" my guess is the song is about what her older sister Viktoria went through years ago.....and how helpless her family felt about it. Of course, it's also a very universal theme that plenty of us can relate to in terms of ourselves or people we know....but I would guess the initial inspiration for this song came from her and her family's specific concern for her sister. The chorus is gorgeous. Especially how it contrasts to the verses....which are more muffled, with a sorta "tick tock" passage of time cadence, and a kind of sadness....while the chorus is this bright expansive plea to pull the other person into the light. I can't wait until we have a full album where I can just put on headphones and listen to 12 or so songs all in one sitting....I'm so curious to hear all the sonic diversity the album will no doubt have.
This song is amazing and your reaction is really spontaneous. This song brings mixed feelings, the lyrics are optimistic but the video is so sad, I thought they would smile at the end, but there are sort of hiding, escaping, avoiding eye contact. It somehow reminds me of some ABBA's sad videos.
I love the shoe-gaze vibes so much. It's a bit indie, a bit shoe-gaze. This song reminds me of the band Grizzly Bear for some reason, but I can't quite put my finger on it. I'm really excited for this new era of Aurora. I love watching her evolve and explore all of her creativity and inspirations. I'm 100% on board with her new sounds.
Stack overflow: too many things on my mind to say or write down. Aurora once again made a masterpiece, and you did a fantastic job by reacting to it so soon! Slightly distressing video at first, I was worried about what might happen. Also, the way she was sitting away from the others felt like she was the one who was gone forever, the rest of the family celebrating a birthday in an uneasy atmosphere without her...but then in the end it turned the other way around with the clothes on the table. Her singing, the production, everything makes me want a new album sooo much. IMO all her albums are the best in the history of music. Quite a lot said.

Your Blood also took me a few days to get used to. I think it's because the production is super complex and ever changing, while with this one it's way more simple (but in a good way). The ending for me works as a mantra ❤ " Don't let your spirit die, this is just a conflict of the mind"

A few observations. There is a Norwegian flag on top of the birthday cake. Aurora has said she always has co-directorship of her music videos. It means the content of the video, is exactly what she wanted, not someone else's artistic interpretation. Finally, Aurora has repeated many times, that she used to hate birthdays and going to birthday parties. It's impossible to know if this is personal, or her imagining of a scenario, because she's done both. Also, even it is personal, it might not be her family. She has spoken about when she was very young, how she realized people were not honest about their emotions (I don't think from the way she said it, that it was necessarily about her family, but others they knew). That she could see they were sad, but pretended to be happy. I got a funny sensation watching it, before seeing your review. There's some nice musical and singing flourishes, but it didn't really connect with me like her other songs. There definitely seems to be a message she's trying to convey, but I'm not sure what it is. Just an edit. Having listened to it several times, it connects with me a lot more now. Aurora is a genius.

Although the lyrics and the video are rather sad. But nevertheless, this is one of the most beautiful songs I have heard from Aurora during the last year. I can't wait to hear this song live ! I am sure, with a decent arrangement, or in an intimate setting, stripped down to maybe only one insrument and her vocals, harmonized by her band members.... this would be HEAVEN ! Ironically, I think it's because Aurora's Norwegian and has a separate Norwegian record label, which might mean there's additional hurdles to overcome for it to be cleared copyright-wise. Same thing happened with Your Blood as well.
At the end if the written lyrics, there’s the word “@mirandaasknes. That’s Aurora’s sister and Yes! Her sister does have a “conflict of the mind” as she is bipolar and Aurora has talked about it several times in the past. I think the table and the people at it are the reactors. They really don’t know how to communicate with someone whose mind is affected. It doesn’t mean they don’t care. The mother cooks a great dinner and brings a huge cake in for dessert ( trying to give as much as she can) but the man basically doesn’t respond to that. I think when a person has a bipolar session, you really can’t easily communicate with them as their minds are on a completely different plane. The littke kid is the only one not eating, not really being silent, but is observing. With effort, he accepts a huge cake that’s too much for him in many ways. But he manages to blow out the candle. Neither parent try to help or encourage him. The parents are metaphors for people who love Miranda, people in her life that love her but don’t know how to react to her bipolarism when it reveals itself, so they retreat to surface, insignificant behavior. Desserts are a reward. It may be difficult for Miranda to see life as a reward. She has a little boy so she has her dessert. But that cake is really huge, and dense, static, and for Miranda, what she’s taken on as a mother, it's a huge thing to fight for understanding( candle blowing) but the sweetness in her life. The scene changes to different forms of jello, in different colors. Jello is a dessert too, and it’s easy to make, but it’s easier to eat and digest. Perhaps that’s the answer for Miranda. Don’t try it feel like you are expected to do or be more than what you are, to adopt a certain role and stay in it. Be flexible ( like jello) with yourself, and bipolar people do tend to try to control the world around them. We are fine with what you have to give. Stay on your medication as it smooths things out and it’s easier to handle (like jello) the conflicts in your mind. This is just my mind rambling as to what the song means. I’m sure I’ll find or think more about it.

@itsaurinotariel if this is your interpretation... for me, it is a symbol for childhood. And you can see it in different ways. I think kids like jelly. But it is not good for you. It is just sugar, water and gelatine... it is empty food, no nutrition. As a parent you might think that you do something good, but in fact it is bad... in this video it is like a symbol for the hollow relationship between the children, parents, in all directions... and nobody is eating. The only thing which is consumed is the wine by the father... and red wine is a symbol as well... of course...

I've been in a really bad place recently, with a lot of dark thoughts spinning around in my head and "The Conflict of the Mind" really hit hard for me. It felt heartbreaking, familiar and comforting at the same time. I felt seen. Aurora is such a special artist and person.

Everyone is struggling, yet no one is talking. Only thing left is silence and lack of eye contact, because bringing anything up could strike an unwanted conversation. I just have to say one more thing. Aurora is one of those few that isn't showboating her voice prowess. She sings the way the song demands. She's a story teller first and foremost and not a circus artist. She never goes, look at me. Am I not good and fantastic? No, she never does that. I sometimes feel like a kid again around Aurora. Curled up beside my grandmother, telling me stories. Stories that are happy or sad. Funny or right out outlandish. Its a very strange feeling for a man who's life is nearing its end. She tend to isolate herself and deal with it on her own. I think she dedicated this song to Miranda because she's a big support for her when she's having a hard time.

It's supposed to be a happy moment of blowing out the candles, but she's sad as it happens, and then forces out the smile, with no creases at the side of the eyes, and tears building up, with her face definitely turning back to sadness as it cuts out. Song's straightforward, "The conflict of the mind" is about contradictions in what we show and how we feel, or maybe in our feelings generally. Bottling up our emotions, lacking hope, longing for more but only seeing the worst, and she wants people to show their real feelings and emotions, their real selves, to allow others in so they can be loved.
She's said she had a happy childhood with a family that was open with each other. I think this has more to do with the Nordic region overall where people keep to themselves, bottle up their emotions, and depression / suicide is a real issue. I believe Her Uncle committed suicide, which lead to "Lucky". She lost a friend during the 2011 mass shooting that lead to "Little Boy in the Grass". I imagine that's just the tip of the iceberg for experiences like this from people living in those nations.

I got the feeling this song depicted a family bereaved. Grief isn’t accepted or talked about much at all. At first I thought it was Aurora who had passed, none of them look at or react as if she is there. Then I saw the clothes as place markers for the parents and that’s when I cried. 😢

I instantly fell in love with Your Blood and still can't stop listen to it. And again I fell in love with The Conflict of the Mind in my very first listen. I think people who have a hard time enjoying Aurora's new songs still didn't get that she's not worried about making music for people to enjoy but rather she sends us a message with every single song. To me, this time Aurora is understanding that if we can solve the problems inside of our families and break the loop of silence and resentment, if we can get access to each other hearts, maybe then we can find the love that is hidden in those conflicts. And then we can help the others and get people more united.

I really love this one, both the song and the music video. I liked "Your Blood" right away, but it took a bit before I LOVED it, but I love this one right out of the gate. And after a few listens, it only gets better and better for me. I think this is so, so good.
Just like "The Gods We Can Touch," it's pretty obvious that the new album is going to be many different styles, and I'm here for that! Even if you don't necessarily love everything, I think it's great that she keeps evolving, and not just trying to do "All My Demons Greeting Me as a Friend" over and over again (which, unfortunately, some fans think she should do).

Not wasting any time with this one, eh? 😊 What a beautiful, yet haunting song. I agree, the overwhelming feeling of sadness really hit me with the start of the video. The contrast of the sound & spoken-word feel of the verses really contrasts with the clarity & soaring vocals of the chorus. Kind of validating the feeling that there can be sadness, but there is a hopefulness that we can overcome it with each others help. And yeah, the little smile & chuckle at the end of the video helped lift the mood more toward hopefulness.

I'm pretty sure this is a sister song to "Your blood". If you read the lyrics they seem connected. The video is also recorded in the same room. You can see the window with the curtains moving. Aurora is not just a singer, but a story teller. And a master of turning the lyrics and videos into a puzzle for her fans to solve. Many of her songs are connected to each other and if you figure out who, you get the full story. She's also having a blast leaving tiny little clues on social media. Often WAY before she relase something new. Its so creative and a lot of fun for her fans.
My guess is that she will release a new album in february.
She finished "The Gods We can Touch" tour in the end of August last year. She's starting her next tour in Norway in march, so it makes sense. To me at least. lol

There was absolutely a hint of Billie Eilish in those whispery across-a-phone-line modulated opening vocals. Then the clear, reverb-laden vocals of the chorus kicked in and a shiver went down my spine! I love this, and if this is a part of where her new album is going, along with "Your Blood", I'm all in! This new song surprised me by its simplicity. I expected the aurorian atmosphere and harmonies, some of the northern magic and complex melody, that can be found in almost all of her songs. I was underwhelmed by this the first time. It sounded so ordinary and simple. Like a song that could play in some childrens tale (Three Wishes for Cinderella, that would fit excellently ,). For a second I feared that this could be the first song I don't like :D. But I gave it two more listens and like it more and more. I am really dumb when it comes to listening to new things, anyway... The previous single was an instant banger, an energetic and fresh surprise, this one is a surprise in the oposite direction. Let's listen some more, then, let's let its magic work on me :)

Given the majority of the song addresses a second person "you" my guess is the song is about what her older sister Viktoria went through years ago.....and how helpless her family felt about it.
Of course, it's also a very universal theme that plenty of us can relate to in terms of ourselves or people we know....but I would guess the initial inspiration for this song came from her and her family's specific concern for her sister. The chorus is gorgeous. Especially how it contrasts to the verses....which are more muffled, with a sorta "tick tock" passage of time cadence, and a kind of sadness....while the chorus is this bright expansive plea to pull the other person into the light. I can't wait until we have a full album where I can just put on headphones and listen to 12 or so songs all in one sitting....I'm so curious to hear all the sonic diversity the album will no doubt have.
This song is amazing and your reaction is really spontaneous. This song brings mixed feelings, the lyrics are optimistic but the video is so sad, I thought they would smile at the end, but there are sort of hiding, escaping, avoiding eye contact. It somehow reminds me of some ABBA's sad videos.

I love the shoe-gaze vibes so much. It's a bit indie, a bit shoe-gaze. This song reminds me of the band Grizzly Bear for some reason, but I can't quite put my finger on it. Stack overflow: too many things on my mind to say or write down. Aurora once again made a masterpiece, and you did a fantastic job by reacting to it so soon! Slightly distressing video at first, I was worried about what might happen. Also, the way she was sitting away from the others felt like she was the one who was gone forever, the rest of the family celebrating a birthday in an uneasy atmosphere without her...but then in the end it turned the other way around with the clothes on the table. Her singing, the production, everything makes me want a new album sooo much. IMO all her albums are the best in the history of music. Quite a lot said.

Not usually excited for new albums anymore, but Aurora is an exception. Really looking forward to it! Saw someone comparing the way this sounds a bit to the "Yoshimi Battles..." album by Flaming Lips, and I get the comparison to a degree (love that album). As always lovely vocals and lyrics. Love it!
Your Blood also took me a few days to get used to. I think it's because the production is super complex and ever changing, while with this one it's way more simple (but in a good way). The ending for me works as a mantra ❤ " Don't let your spirit die, this is just a conflict of the mind"

Aaaaaaaaaaa I loved
A few observations. There is a Norwegian flag on top of the birthday cake. Aurora has said she always has co-directorship of her music videos. It means the content of the video, is exactly what she wanted, not someone else's artistic interpretation. Finally, Aurora has repeated many times, that she used to hate birthdays and going to birthday parties. It's impossible to know if this is personal, or her imagining of a scenario, because she's done both. Also, even it is personal, it might not be her family. She has spoken about when she was very young, how she realized people were not honest about their emotions (I don't think from the way she said it, that it was necessarily about her family, but others they knew). That she could see they were sad, but pretended to be happy. I got a funny sensation watching it, before seeing your review. There's some nice musical and singing flourishes, but it didn't really connect with me like her other songs. There definitely seems to be a message she's trying to convey, but I'm not sure what it is.
Just an edit. Having listened to it several times, it connects with me a lot more now. Aurora is a genius.

@@ashlenamusic - It often takes me a few listens, to realize how good is. I suppose I was a bit disappointed, because it wasn't what we usually expect from Aurora. But that's why she's a genius, because she does get it right, even if you didn't realize it at first.

Hi dear Ashlena ! What a beautiful song, isn't it ? I listened to it during my break at work and loved it immediately, especially the refrain. Such a gorgeous melody. Although the lyrics and the video are rather sad. But nevertheless, this is one of the most beautiful songs I have heard from Aurora during the last year. I can't wait to hear this song live ! I am sure, with a decent arrangement, or in an intimate setting, stripped down to maybe only one insrument and her vocals, harmonized by her band members.... this would be HEAVEN !

Ironically, I think it's because Aurora's Norwegian and has a separate Norwegian record label, which might mean there's additional hurdles to overcome for it to be cleared copyright-wise.

At the end if the written lyrics, there’s the word “@mirandaasknes. That’s Aurora’s sister and Yes! Her sister does have a “conflict of the mind” as she is bipolar and Aurora has talked about it several times in the past. I think the table and the people at it are the reactors. They really don’t know how to communicate with someone whose mind is affected. It doesn’t mean they don’t care. The mother cooks a great dinner and brings a huge cake in for dessert ( trying to give as much as she can) but the man basically doesn’t respond to that. I think when a person has a bipolar session, you really can’t easily communicate with them as their minds are on a completely different plane. The littke kid is the only one not eating, not really being silent, but is observing. With effort, he accepts a huge cake that’s too much for him in many ways. But he manages to blow out the candle. Neither parent try to help or encourage him. The parents are metaphors for people who love Miranda, people in her life that love her but don’t know how to react to her bipolarism when it reveals itself, so they retreat to surface, insignificant behavior. Desserts are a reward. It may be difficult for Miranda to see life as a reward. She has a little boy so she has her dessert. But that cake is really huge, and dense, static, and for Miranda, what she’s taken on as a mother, it's a huge thing to fight for understanding( candle blowing) but the sweetness in her life. The scene changes to different forms of jello, in different colors. Jello is a dessert too, and it’s easy to make, but it’s easier to eat and digest. Perhaps that’s the answer for Miranda. Don’t try it feel like you are expected to do or be more than what you are, to adopt a certain role and stay in it. Be flexible ( like jello) with yourself, and bipolar people do tend to try to control the world around them. We are fine with what you have to give. Stay on your medication as it smooths things out and it’s easier to handle (like jello) the conflicts in your mind.
This is just my mind rambling as to what the song means. I’m sure I’ll find or think more about it.

Miranda is not bipolar, my friend. That is Viktoria. She has always been very open about her mental health to both her family and in public. She was blogging about it for many years. Now she often talk about it in the Podcast she has with their cousin. Some of her stories are heart breaking, and there's no doubt that it's a part of what shaped Aurora into the kind of person she is. I think Aurora dedicated this song to Miranda as a "thank you" for supporting HER when she struggles. She mentioned several times that she's still learning to ask her loved ones for help when she's going through something difficult. She tend to isolate herself and deal with it the best she can on her own.
After looking into the meaning of this song, I found this info:

I wasn't able to watch this yesterday, finished my shift and I was really shattered needed to chill but never too late I'm curious I haven't heard this release though I was curious off course but I wanted to check your approach on my premier
