    Have you tried measuring the cable stretched (not coiled)? Can't the coiled cable causing the interference and thus a considerable distortion of the result? Just my thought :)

      It is ok to Check your cable on the reel or in the box. 2) For copper twisted-pair cable, attach a local area network cable tester to a pair at the free end of the cable while it is on the reel or in the box. Use the length function to determine the length of the cable. If the tester has no length function, measure the distance to an open circuit;
      this should be the length of the cable, unless it is broken at midspan.
      3) If you doubt the reading you have obtained, attach your test instrument to another fiber or pair in the same cable and repeat the length test.
      Here is a website guide.

      Your right, coiled cables usually throw out the accuracy of length measurement.

    I did a lot of cable length testing, and I can tell you that unless you can calibrate the tester for the quality of each wire "Material / diam and twist per inch / cm" you will never get an accurate test! Cat 5 has 1.5 to 2 twists per cm while cat 6 at a min is 2 or more. This results in more material over the same measured length of cable... Thus, different results!

      The tester will let you choose cat5 or cat6, and still fails the test!
      Thanks for your comment :)

      @@Stuart-Video Thats not calibration though. Not all cat5 or cat6 are equal. Those generic cheap testers are set to the lowest of each of those standards more than likely. Question though. When you run the same test multiple times on the same cable does the test very by a considerable margin? Say 10 tests on the same cable? Wondering if it is even consistent. But at the end of the day, you’re not going to get much out of a $100 tester. Surprised it even has that option.

    What I'd like to see with the cable length test is a wire or a pair snipped in the cable and see if it detects the cut in the wire by presenting a shorter distance.. I don't really care about length tests, but if it can detect a break that's a huge bonus.

    • @Stuart-Video
      @Stuart-Video  10 місяців тому

      It will detect the length of the cut pair but will be off on the size , but still won't help. it shows the length of each pair but not correctly.

    Interesting video..Does it perform any better with different types of cable? Also is there anyway to calibrate the machine in the settings to a known length of cable?

      I just use cat 6 cable, calibration Not that I know of, it just asks what kind of cable Cat5e or Cat6.

      @@Stuart-VideoAny idea if the error on the length consistent ie does a 50 foot cable shows as being about 80 foot? Just trying to work around the error to make the feature usable?

      Good thinking but , I dont know yet need more testing on that. but will it be consistent from tester to tester? will be guessing :(@@peterevans8194

    Do you not have to calibrate it with a test cable?

    • @Stuart-Video
      @Stuart-Video  3 місяці тому

      No calibrate, just pick cat5 or cat6 then click ok.

    I use this NF 8508 from Noyafa very often due to the work I carry out both in industrial and military environments and I must say that I consider it quite reliable, at least the one in my possession is precise.
    Out of curiosity I wanted to try it by purchasing it on Aliexpress for 75 euros and I made comparisons on Cat 6 cables with the Fluke LinkIQ series and on Cat 5E with a One Touch 2 also from Fluke. On even important Ethernet routes (70-85 meters) it reported readings very similar to the Flukes.
    For a low-cost battle tool it is more than reliable.

      Again my testing shows that this device
      I have is not correct for length testing.

      Hi my other tester for length is not correct also, so no sense in showing that . 100ft cable showing 162ft is not correct. thanks for your comments :)

      @@Stuart-Video Hi thank you for your response. Not to be disrespectful but what if you are wrong and its not 100ft of cable ? Test it with a patch cable of something. Else some cables have length measurements printed on the cable and you can tell if thats 100ft or not

      The cable is 100ft role marked 100ft, in the video I say I have tested short cables that are also not showing correct size on the tester I tested many cables before I made this video :) @@Net-Extension
