The color palate is drab, the lead looks bored in the trailers, the action previewed looks like average at best choreography, etc. The comic book version of the character is a minor supporting character, and the TV version wasn't interesting in the Hawkeye show. I already saw this character before and it was just average. Why make a series for such an average bland character? Then the endorsements by the Too Cool For School fans on the teaser indicates the show isn't going to be anything special.
Echo in the comics has always been deaf and Native American but her abilities are supposed to be similar to the Taskmaster and she to my knowledge has never been an amputee. So being a cannonically diverse, disabled, woman wasnt enough for Marvel. This character should have been EVERYTHING they wanted without having to screw around with it! Its NEVER enough for these people.

You're the only Echo we'll ever need! Watching an Asian drama with a deaf character, and part of the appeal is occasional slow-moving, thoughtful, silent scenes. It's not the best series, but certainly more interesting than this film looks to be.

Something that so many modern "writers" seem to not understand is the most interesting thing about a character is almost always, not who they are, but their character journey throughout the story. How they change and evolve. What they learn. How they become better or worse people. You can have a character start off as a supreme warrior, but then you have to make their journey about something else they have to develop. Maybe start them off as cold hearted and selfish and make their journey about becoming a more empathetic and generous person. When it comes to writing disabled people, writers should realize that being disabled is a challenge and they should accept that challenge in their writing. If you have a deaf and mute character, you need to include how difficult it is for them to communicate. Instead we constantly see every random character they run into just inexplicably knowing how to sign, a skill that is probably fairly rare for your average person. Everything I just typed is pretty basic information that even every novice writer should learn. Apparently, when you check a few boxes in the identity politics ledger, you can skip all the learning and developing phases of a skill and jump right to paid work. I can assure you there a thousands (if not millions) of skilled and talented writers who never get a chance while the entertainment industry hands out jobs to the DEI brigade like candy.

Once again I'll remark, that most blind characters are pretty terrible! either they have some sort of Jordi laforge or daredevil style super power or device which negates any actual affects of blindness, effectively making them as blind as Darth Vader is quadriplegic, or they're pathetic, winjing tiny tim knockoffs, such as the blind girl in Jody Witicker's Doctor who, whos only function is being blind, helpless and sweet! In either case such characters are usually blind! with a capital blind, with their blindness the most important thing about them! and this when living as a blind person, I spend most of my time trying to convince people that I am more similar to them, than different, and none-working eyeballs doesn't mean I'm some sort of alien! There have been a couple of exceptions, EG Toh from Avatar the last airbender, who is wonderfully flawed and fleshed out, and whose blind negation superpower has massive limits, or Henry Leiden, from Stephen King's novel Black house, but these are rare. As a child, I personally "identified!" and looked up to characters like Frodo, Doctor who, Ripley, Luke Skywalker or Bastian from Never ending story. Characters (usually but not always men), who went through struggle and hardship, exemplified virtues of persistence, loyalty, as well as intelligence and ingenuity. Characters who got knocked down but then picked themselves up again, or faced a hostile world armed with only some fast talking and quick thinking. those! are the stories which resonate with me "as a blind person. Would I like to see more well written blind characters on screen? Well a couple might be nice, albeit I'm hardly going to castigate any story for not! including them. Would I like to see more "empowered blind characters", on screen, hell no! And Hell no with an extra helping of double hammer holy hand grenade of Antioch hell no if said character is another "strong female character", whose going to be insulting me for being born male. Indeed, given the choice I'd always choose a well written sighted character over a badly written blind one, since while I can always enjoy the former, I will only feel contempt and annoyance at the latter!

I redid my Disney+ subscription for the sole purpose of watching What If season 2 only to be disappointed. Almost every single episode made a woman the lead and they made an entire episode in another language where you had to read the subtitles to follow along. What if my kids wanted to watch it? None of them could read the subtitles and follow along. They alienated half their audience with that one single episode. My Disney+ membership is cancelled and it's not getting renewed.
I mostly agree. BUT, I did really enjoy the blade-runner-inspired Nebula episode (episode 1?). It was a quick compelling little story with a fantastic visual aesthetic.
If your children can't read maybe they shouldn't be watching something rated TV-14 anyway. Personally I wouldn't watch it with my kids because it's garbage

Watching an Asian drama with a deaf character, and part of the appeal is occasional slow-moving, thoughtful, silent scenes.
It's not the best series, but certainly more interesting than this film looks to be.

Something that so many modern "writers" seem to not understand is the most interesting thing about a character is almost always, not who they are, but their character journey throughout the story. How they change and evolve. What they learn. How they become better or worse people.
You can have a character start off as a supreme warrior, but then you have to make their journey about something else they have to develop. Maybe start them off as cold hearted and selfish and make their journey about becoming a more empathetic and generous person.
When it comes to writing disabled people, writers should realize that being disabled is a challenge and they should accept that challenge in their writing. If you have a deaf and mute character, you need to include how difficult it is for them to communicate. Instead we constantly see every random character they run into just inexplicably knowing how to sign, a skill that is probably fairly rare for your average person.
Everything I just typed is pretty basic information that even every novice writer should learn. Apparently, when you check a few boxes in the identity politics ledger, you can skip all the learning and developing phases of a skill and jump right to paid work. I can assure you there a thousands (if not millions) of skilled and talented writers who never get a chance while the entertainment industry hands out jobs to the DEI brigade like candy.

Nah, that's not it. It's mostly an excuse. The best superhero tv show was the first season of the Punisher. And it wasn't really about character growth. It was about testosterone, adrenaline, masculinity, revenge and grown men doing and caring about grown men things.
Superhero genre is for boys and men, women are generally more practical. And men don't have problems with female empowerment fantasies, they just don't really care about them. And it's completely fair.

Once again I'll remark, that most blind characters are pretty terrible! either they have some sort of Jordi laforge or daredevil style super power or device which negates any actual affects of blindness, effectively making them as blind as Darth Vader is quadriplegic, or they're pathetic, winjing tiny tim knockoffs, such as the blind girl in Jody Witicker's Doctor who, whos only function is being blind, helpless and sweet!
In either case such characters are usually blind! with a capital blind, with their blindness the most important thing about them! and this when living as a blind person, I spend most of my time trying to convince people that I am more similar to them, than different, and none-working eyeballs doesn't mean I'm some sort of alien!
There have been a couple of exceptions, EG Toh from Avatar the last airbender, who is wonderfully flawed and fleshed out, and whose blind negation superpower has massive limits, or Henry Leiden, from Stephen King's novel Black house, but these are rare.
As a child, I personally "identified!" and looked up to characters like Frodo, Doctor who, Ripley, Luke Skywalker or Bastian from Never ending story.
Characters (usually but not always men), who went through struggle and hardship, exemplified virtues of persistence, loyalty, as well as intelligence and ingenuity.
Characters who got knocked down but then picked themselves up again, or faced a hostile world armed with only some fast talking and quick thinking.
those! are the stories which resonate with me "as a blind person.
Would I like to see more well written blind characters on screen? Well a couple might be nice, albeit I'm hardly going to castigate any story for not! including them.
Would I like to see more "empowered blind characters", on screen, hell no! And Hell no with an extra helping of double hammer holy hand grenade of Antioch hell no if said character is another "strong female character", whose going to be insulting me for being born male.

I redid my Disney+ subscription for the sole purpose of watching What If season 2 only to be disappointed. Almost every single episode made a woman the lead and they made an entire episode in another language where you had to read the subtitles to follow along. What if my kids wanted to watch it? None of them could read the subtitles and follow along. They alienated half their audience with that one single episode.
My Disney+ membership is cancelled and it's not getting renewed.
I mostly agree. BUT, I did really enjoy the blade-runner-inspired Nebula episode (episode 1?). It was a quick compelling little story with a fantastic visual aesthetic.

But it was the movies that really stood out. They had actual plotlines and character arcs. The writers actually cared about their work. And special effects required actual talent rather than just a bunch of mouse clicks on a computer.
