- The first few months of a young hawk's flighted life are full of learning how to navigate the world and find food, and "M1" learned the hard way that squirrels may be a little harder to catch than initially anticipated. After a strong, low flight across the grass toward the squirrel, it turns into a chase around the tree with the squirrel always a few steps ahead. Soon, M1 decides to move on till another opportunity presents itself.

@edwardcrawford6455 okay thanks!:)
Wow! I'm impressed!
So happy to see the juveniles after leaving the nest. Really appreciate the continued coverage. Cute episode with the squirrel. Oh that learning curve. Thanks for sharing as they explore this bigger world.
What a treasure of a video clip! M1 may want to try hiding those "big wings" when chasing squirrels around the tree trunks! lol
That was precious ! Such a nice catch by the cam operator! Thank you.
Wonderful capture. Lucky squirrel
That was smart of the squirrel to stay low, because if he had gone higher, it would have made it easier for M1 to catch him. I once saw a mother hawk training her baby hawk, and a squirrel was crossing the street, and the baby hawk swooped down, the squirrel ran under a magnolia tree and at the very LAST minute, the squirrel rolled and tossed magnolia leaves up at the hawk, which of course, he wasn't expecting, and it scared the baby off. SO SMART of the squirrel, an amazing thing to see and good use of tools!
😍 lol So cute!! Great capture by the cam op!!
That was great!
nice capture, comical!
I always wondered what it looked like when they try to catch prey as a beginner! Thanks for catching this!!!
Mother nature sad and cute all at the same time..😊
So cute! Thanks so much! ❤
💜 it's just too cute😆. Thank you Cornell Lab for this little moment.🕊
Thanks cam ops for keeping track of them.
Dang! I was sitting here cheering for M1!
That was hilarious!
Squirrel is in big trouble when M1 figures it out😂😂😂
looks like they were playing with each other!
🥰
Cool to watch M1 learning to hunt even if it did look like "Ring Around the Rosie" it is serious development! thanks cam op for catching this and posting!
Thats entertainment!
Practice honing those hunting skills!
Thats great coverage! Good Job Cornell Lab!
❤❤❤💕💕💕
A little like thinking the food is going to cook itself.
Love this. Thank you for catching it. M1, you could have had him if you just gave it a little more time.
❤❤❤
Like 2 kids playing peek-a-boo or hide-and-seek!
M1: That looks like something I’ve eaten before. Squirrel: Oh, no I think I’m in trouble. Staring ensures. M1 leaves. Squirrel: Phew!
Interesting. Must have been a reason why the squirrel didn't climb higher in the tree. That girl walking by missed a good nature moment!
He's an easier catch up on a limb. Better odds if he knows where a hiding hole is, like under a porch, or an access point to the nearby home.
I wondered that, too. Hopefully she did see the drama unfolding and stopped to watch off camera. It looked like she was carrying a leaf blower. :D
😅
Target locked and seeking... Uh now what? Ring around the rosie it is
That was like watching an old Looney Toons cartoon XD
how can you tell which hawk is which?
...and the squirrel lives another day (to raid bird feeders).
Look tasty, how to get tasty? Me no know.
This is where I'm sorry that the hawk missed a meal--but also glad that the squirrel escaped death. But there are no morals in nature.
