  • Today was a fantastic day at Pete Cox and Son Sports Cars where I got to lend a hand in in rebuilding my own diff for the Triumph Spitfire Project. Pete Cox and Son have been going for over 40 years, and what they don't know about Triumph transmissions isn't worth knowing so it was a pleasure to have them working on my diff and also to be invited in helping do it, and being able to have a look around there facility
    For any help and support with Triumph transmissions and diffs please look them up, hears a link to there website: petecoxsportsc...

    Nice :) I'm rebuilding a Spit 1500 Diff. myself at this time.
    It's a pity you didn't show how you set the position and preload for the pinion and the carrier and evaluate the final wear pattern.
    Interesting to see how tight you set the sun & planet gears. That's probably what 0 backlash looks like - as specified by the workshop manual...

      Cheers mate, some of the things done where not filmed as it would be back and forth filming the job and long winded. Although the video is already long we choose to just explain a few jobs rather then make the video too long. Pete and Tom Cox really do know there stuff when it comes to Triumph gearboxes and diffs 👍

      Preload set up would have been really useful.

    Hmm… you didn’t seem to find a problem that would give a whine in the diff… just replaced bearings and seals ?

      This is not the diff from my Spitfire, it’s a diff from a Spitfire that was scrapped and will go into my Spitfire to replace the whining diff that’s currently in my Spitfire 👍

      @@SteveDentonClassics Yes I thought that might be the case but the commentary was a bit confusing.
      Now you can dismantle the other one and diagnose it ! Or maybe you did a part-ex deal with the workshop ?

      It would be nice too, however the old unit is surcharged to Pete Cox and Son so it'll have to be sent to them as it is 👍

    Good Morning Steve. I need a favor. I have a friend that has a 76 Spit 1500, single rail 4 speed, no O/D. He is looking for a rebuild kit for his shift linkage. Checked the usual suspects but is not available. Any sources that you have that might have it? Thanks in advance, Jerry in Jupiter, Fl, USA.

      Thanks for getting back to me Steve, turns out he has a 3 rail so those kits are readily available over here. Have a great day!@@SteveDentonClassics

    Enjoyed the video but why didn’t you show/explain one off the most important things that is setting up the wear pattern on the crown wheel?? 😢

      Cheers Paul, however sadly some things need to be kept a little hush as Pete Cox and Sons have to make a living 👍

      @@SteveDentonClassics I quite appreciate that but you can find it very easily on UA-cam or the web and like I did 50 years ago read a book on the subject in fact in my car’s hand book that where issued when car was new in 1934 👍👍👍👍, so in other words it’s not a secret!!!

      Somethings where left out of the video, after all Pete and Tom Cox have to make a living, the video is more an insight into there business 👍

    Thanks for a great video.
    I can't remember if your MK III has an OD, but i tend to find the standard ratio on the low side.
    When i'm 'crusing' at 90 km/h (55 mph) the engine is rotating around 4000 rpm.
    The standard ratio for MK III is 4.11:1 I'm looking for a diff with ratio 3.27:1
    Do you see that as a bad idea?

      Cheers mate. This some of question is one that is best to ask Pete Cox and Son, as they'll be able to give you the best advise 👍

    Fame at last Tom.
    Your gearbox and lsd diff gave me some great results this season from event class wins to championship year end first in class and 2nd over all.
    But also the fastest 0-64ft time all year for the whole championship 2.29s that is a great drive train. Thanks guys. ❤

    Hi Steve. Nice informative video. I have a TR6 with a whining diff (I think, its hard to tell if it comes from the gearbox or the diff), under decelleration and acceleration, so i think it might be from the pinion baerings. Any other ideas ? 😀

    • @SteveDentonClassics
      @SteveDentonClassics  Рік тому +1

      Cheers mate. Firstly it's important to be sure the whining is coming from the diff, and not the gearbox or wheel bearing. I'd start with getting the car airborne. And safely on axle stands, with it wheels free simulating what the symptoms your hearing are, and listen to it from there 👍

    • @martinsndergaard3400
      @martinsndergaard3400 Рік тому +1

      Actually I have had it airborne a while ago. I went through all the gears and couldnt hear the whining, so it is a thing that is only there with the wheels under load. Sorry if I put the words together in a wrong, I am from Denmark 🤨😀
