Over 45 years old here and yesterday asked my 102 year old friend if it was too late to learn how to play my first instrument. She said no, go for it! Since the 3rd grade I've wanted to learn cello, and this is the year! Thank you for your videos, I look forward to watching the series. Any tips for the middle aged newbie??

If you just want to play it for fun, that's one thing, but if you are quite serious about it I would recommend diversifying a little bit. I went back to college later in life, about the same age as you, and started to get back into music. I originally started taking cello lessons in grade school, but due to lack of funds had to stop. When I was back in college I started with guitar, then did a few semesters of voice, and then overlapped that with introduction to theory and cello. I am also learning keyboard now. They all play off of and support each other and I believe I have been able to improve at a faster rate with each. Also, at our age I would recommend a diverse physical fitness regimen. Nothing too crazy, but at least something stretchy like yoga, and something to help with building a solid core like Pilates. A strong core will help your playing and help prevent other parts of your body from getting sore during playing. You don't have to be a weightlifter though. My body is a little beat up (Marine Corps), so diet and supplementation helps with joint issues.

I stopped playing cello 4 years ago as I also play double bass and found they clashed a bit, especially when it came to working out which instrument I have to play in which orchestra. It’s amazing how you never truly forget how to play an instrument, it’s just reading cello music I need to work on since I get confused a lot with my bass music and cello music 😂😂
Yup! I played the Violin for 10 years and also stopped after I had my 1st born... 5 years later I'm back at it, a little rusty but I still remember songs from 10 years ago!

Hi Tina. I got my cello a year ago. I'm actually a pianist. "studied piano performance at university", and love trying out different instruments. I started playing the violin a few years ago, but I just couldn't get the shoulder rest-thing working for me. Dunnoh... But then I got a cello, and was researching cello lessons on the internet and on UA-cam. I just listened to your video. I am completely blind, and could follow your video quite clearly. Would appreciate if you keep on describing what you are presenting on the video in words as well, so I could follow. For instance at what angle the cello has to rest on you, how exactly to grip the bow, etc. Thank you. Do you have a Facebook page or a website too? God bless.
Very appreciated the first lesson, I dropped off cello for long long time. thank you for picking some keys points all over from the beginning. I pick up my interest to lean cello again, thank you so much.
it´s by far the most versatile of the bowed instruments... love those things... but i´ll stick to guitar i guess :) non the less, i´m always curious about other instruments and this series will be followed closely ;)
Merci Tina ! Je trouve cela génial ! I am waiting the next video ! Thank you ! I have started cello since 6 month , i am 49 years old and it was a dream for me ! You'r a star for me !!! Thank you very much Tina !
I’m just getting started with the cello after a 35 year break. I found your video very informative and helpful as both a refresher and new information, especially about how to use your body to help bowing.
Yay! Cello lessons! : D I started learning the cello almost 2 years ago, but since I also play the violin, my bow hand's pinky has become so confused between both instruments. :/ I also struggle keeping my left thumb behind my 2nd finger instead of my 1st finger like with violin. There are lots of similarities between the two instruments, but the small differences are really hard for me to change! :o I really like the cello though, and I'm excited for more cello lesson videos! : D Thumb position is really rough for me. Keeping the fingers curved instead of smushed-looking in thumb-position feels impossible.. T_T
Katy Adelson I know right! I play the violin and just started cello lessons. Some times I just feel like I want to flip the cello upside down and play it like a violin 😂
Thank you so much! I am a flutist, and am fascinated by the sound of cello, so I have rented one and i'm a total beginner now. Your Episode 1 is very helpful.
I'm not even musical, and this was a great video for beginners. Question, does it matter if you are left or right handed? If you are left handed would you just switch the cello to the other side?
Tina Guo I just nead to say I LOVE this video Even I have played cello like 5 years byw love you and how many years you have played cello and You Are relly good And Can You still do some kindaf video game music. Btw I am relly happy if you read all of this
I met a guy one year and a half ago who played with a specially built only for him cello, a mirrored one, because he is left handed. Either way, he was a special case, of course it shouldn't matter. Btw he plays exceptionally!
I leftie 'violinist' - and casual cellist. When I first started, my teacher said that lefties tend to have a slight advantage due to the left side being used for notes - aka, the finer details. I found after a couple of weeks, it was very natural to play with the left!
She makes some very good points. Most anatomic problems that affect musicians have to do with being stuck in the same position and holding the tension for prolonged periods of time. The same goes for any other repetitive motion, including typing on a keyboard. When I was starting to learn the piano, my teacher told me to hold my fingers arched, which actually created so much unnecessary tension. Not until many years later did I realise the negative impact of this. Thing is, unrestrained movement can only come from total relaxation. After having experienced debilitating RSD I now know that the best to play is by slowly keep moving my entire body during the whole performance and, truth be told, if you get carried away by the music, you will find yourself naturally doing that anyway. The human body was not made to be still, it is made for movement; the best way to keep it healthy is to keep moving (within reason).
Thank you for the tip at 14:55, Tina. I've watched quite a few cello instruction videos and have never come across that technique before. For me, every little bit helps!

I just got my first cello at 27 😁Thank you so much for teaching us! You give such a warm and soft energy and it helps with learning alot ☺️ You are my biggest inspiration tbh. 💕 Such a warm but strong woman!
Thank you so much! I was just feeling around in the dark for a week now. I played guitar for 23 years, and then I bought a cello. It is a daunting task I have set, but now I feel a bit better and less scared.
This is describing the absolute basics and its exactly what I needed. I cant find an instructor yet, but I really needed this to get started!! Definitely moving forward and watching all your videos!!
Tina, I am 67 years old; have played Bass Guitar for 51 years, and am just taking up the cello. Thank you for your lesson. I will look forward to watching more lessons from you!
Amazing tutorial... so lucky we are to learn from the expert. Hope to see more of these tutorials
Tina you are the Nigella of the classical world. Love your talent and thank you for sharing tips for budding musicians
Planning on buying a cello super soon. Recently started playing Bass Guitar after playing only Guitar for years, really sparked an ambition to learn a ton of new instruments. Can already tell the Fundamentals of Bass and Cello and completely different, pretty exciting stuff.
I just received my very first cello today and I found this very useful. I will be watching more. Thankyou!
I'm a cellist and this video made me realise how bad my posture is lmao
Same here ahah 🤣
I play with a broken hip on one side and a prosthetic hip on the other side. Posture is a write off for me
Same here lol
Oh thank you Tina, I'm gonna buy and learn the cello with your videos, it's the best instrument and you are so inspiring!

I just started playing cello yesterday eeyyyyy this is gonna help me thank you
Great😀 and thank you so much for the lesson. At 63 I’m on my second year of study. I’m very happy you are becoming more and more involved producing UA-cam videos and look forward to your weekly Saturday live show and now this one. 😘
I saw you when I found a live video of you jamming with a guitar shredder. I can’t remember who it was but that doesn’t matter because I was totally blown away by your passionate playing and skill. From the first view of you I’ve been a fan. I love guitars. Playing, talking about it and the gear. I also love learning about other instruments and people that make 🎵 music. Your music, passion, and attitude are an inspiration to anyone.
This is great please continue to develop more content like this. Oh by way I watch your Saturday vids too. 👍👍👀
Thank you for sharing this! I just picked up cello after not playing for 20 years and this was a great reintroduction for me!
Ur such an amazing teacher, im so exciting to buy a cello, from where can i buy one not expensive for beginner?
Looks like you attract a variety of fans, I'm part of the older group and appreciate your tone and articulation. Thanks for the different camera angles that really helped me. Thank you.
I played but had no choice but to give it up. No more money. I will keep listening to your beautiful cello playing though.
Aw I'm sorry! Hugs and hope you can reunite with Cello one day!
@@tinaguo You are a very kind person for saying that, I appreciate your compassion. Sorry for the late reply , I just had surgery on my foot. At least I can still sing. I have recorded over 800 songs on the Smule karaoke app. God bless you and I will listen to your cello playing. 🎶
Thank you for sharing those helpful female details!
That was awesome. I was thinking about buying a beginner Cello. I think I'm sold, thanks!
Aw thanks Freddy!
I’m so happy that you’re becoming more active with youtube >
Gabriel Plays cello Ayyy Gabriel
Thank you so much for sharing your gift of music and teaching.❤️ It means a lot to me.
Consider my interest piqued. Cello is probably my favorite of the bowed strings, and this has gotten me interested in learning.
it´s by far the most versatile of the bowed instruments... love those things... but i´ll stick to guitar i guess :)
non the less, i´m always curious about other instruments and this series will be followed closely ;)
Merci Tina ! Je trouve cela génial ! I am waiting the next video ! Thank you ! I have started cello since 6 month , i am 49 years old and it was a dream for me ! You'r a star for me !!! Thank you very much Tina !
I don't own a cello... I don't know anyone who owns a cello... and yet i watched all 20 minutes of this
This is just the best beginners cello series on UA-cam! Glad I found it!
Besides being beautiful, you are extremely talented!
Katy Adelson very informative lesson. Need infirmation on musical interpretation.
@@Itsamecat Same here, can relate 10000000%
Thank you so much! I am a flutist, and am fascinated by the sound of cello, so I have rented one and i'm a total beginner now. Your Episode 1 is very helpful.
Could you go through the Cello Suzuki book/songs? Those would he grey lessons!
Madelyn O'Neill that’s a great idea!
It makes a lot of sense for a beautiful person to play beautifully
I'm not even musical, and this was a great video for beginners. Question, does it matter if you are left or right handed? If you are left handed would you just switch the cello to the other side?
Aw thanks! It doesn't matter, because both hands are being used! Finger with your left and Bow with your right :) x
Im 46 and my talented boyfriend gifted me a cello and I love it ! Now gotta learn how to play it.
Thank you from lesson.
Congratulations TINA ❤
Thank you for the tip at 14:55, Tina. I've watched quite a few cello instruction videos and have never come across that technique before. For me, every little bit helps!
AMAZING AND BEAUTIFUL TINA. HAVE A LOVELY DAY...!!!
It's been 14 years since I've started playing and I find your videos very useful for improving skills. Thank you!
